rainbow trout and steelhead are the same species.steelhead are rainbows that spend the first 3yrs of its life at sea.then they come back to the tribs so if that rainbow is in a river that open to the ocean then it most definitely is......we also have sea run brown trout here in nj.

I would doubt that this is a stocked fish though judging from the health of the fins.

There is no steelheads in Jersey. Technically steelheads are a sea run rainbow trout. The great lakes have a few strand of steelheads in them, but nothing in jersey.

@Ryevin There are no rainbows stocked where they were fishing, there was once back in the 80's but the little creek only sees surplus brookies.

this is a strain of rainbow called a redbanned. jersey has no steelhead runs or streams. i fish jersey and new york regularly and i've caught this type of rainbow in the past. theyre a very pretty fish

LOL you guys down south call em stocked....Up here the wild ones we get go like that in late fall early winter. Mostly just the males...the females dont go as dark they go more bright pinkish-chromey. Nice fish though.

the larger the trout the more there jaw becomes hooked like a salmon or steelhead my guess is it was a large rainbow

it clearly looks like a rainbow trout but you should have gotten better video of it if it is a steel head man you are one lucky fisherman ive caught some bruisers this year myself using night crawlers

egkg75, thanks for the posts. We are working on editing the vid to include some stills of the fish. Swing over to our site to see more info and the still pics. Center Pin is the type of fishing, not the location. Location is in North Central NJ.  Center Pinning is the most effective way to fish this time of year.

Is that a steelhead? I didn't even know Jersey had them, I'm from S. Jersey so its all a mystery to me.
