Would like to know the backing of the duet...who is playing that beautiful sounding guitar and all the others. I think there performance, playing and singing, was probably the best Woodstock had....others were great, but this pair was absolutely perfect musically.
Ahhh whats beats me is why havent we any more people who would like to revolution like our parents and grandparents did? The media seems to take people and spit them out in whatever veiw that they please.Ahhhh man we cant let it go on, anybody with me friend me, im serious we need to make a revolution, nationwide, we need to let the spirit burn just once more, let the passion run free. Freedom, peace, happiness, all this with just a bit of self control,a bit of help ples, like i said, friend me.
@gfutbolfanatico Your dad took me and few other freshman down to Esalon in 1966. I learned on that trip that I wasn't in the Midwest anymore! I never knew he was a singer...having lost touch with him after that year. I agree with you, though...he's got a wonderful voice.
Though the Divine Ms. Joan’s voice blends well with so many other singers, she and Mr. Shurtleff are perfect together! Jeffery Shurtleff had a beautiful voice! Of course Ms. Joan's duets with her late Sister Mimi are fantastic!
By the way, “He’s A Drug Store Truck Drivin Man” is a delight! Thanks to the up loaders, you are appreciated! JSE.
@vicpur what? being stoned automatically voids your professionalism? lol joan baez definitely is professional but she definitely wasnt the only one just cause she was sober. i actually admire those who were trashed and managed to give incredible performances that often were much harder to pull off and more complex than this one.
Jeffrey lived up on struggle mountain on joans property back around 1970. my father knew jeffrey. i believe they met at a bookstore or through acquaintances. i met jeffrey several times as i would visit northern calif. from LA. they were all a part of the resistance movement, fighting against the draft. my memories of jeffrey and his beautiful cottage have never escaped me. he was a gentle soul. special.
Jeff was best friends with Dave Harris...Joan's eventual husband...at Stanford. They were R.A.s in adjoining houses in Wilbur Hall...a freshman dorm...in 1965.
You're welcome. As far as I know Jeffrey never did any professional singing again. He's still living in the Bay Area and has spent his life working as an activist and social organizer kind of person.
As others have said, thanks so much for sharing this beautiful moment. If any of you get a chance to hear her sing Sweet Sir Galahad at this same festival, it will take your breath away it's so beautiful. It was on youtube for a while but I haven't been able to find it recently.
jfrey, thanks so much for sharing this. i have only discovered joan baez two weeks ago, and every new live clip i see whether current or early days amazes me further how extra-ordinary woman she is.
so much depth and not one pbs write-up is enough to cover it all well..... alas
jeffrey shurtleff. he lived up on struggle mountain in palo alto where joan lived. a beautiful, soulful spirit. i met him because my dad used to know him. we would go up to struggle mountain and visit jeffrey. meant alot to my dad then and especially more now that he is 85. memories.....
Beautiful. Joan would later make this the title song of her 1970 album ONE DAY AT A TIME. You can tell she and Jeffrey are still working out the vocals and other specifics, this must have been one of their first performances of the song. Joan doesn't mention it in her intro, but the song was written by Willie Nelson, who was then a largely unknown Nashville songwriter.
I think she called the song "I Live One Dat At A Time"

I would have kissed her if I was there. And she wouldn't have mind it if I was nine then! But sadly I was born in 1994....:((
