  • Galaxies spin in quiet splendor and know not Jerusalem...

  • The Nature series has a segment on elephant fostering in Kenya, where the keeper lives with the babies that have been rescued from killers of their parents for their ivory. They stay with them a year, then out from the jungle comes a matriarch elephant who speaks to them in elephant and calls them to her and the go. Every year. We humans are so arrogant we are killing ourselves with it.

  • Oh I just sent this video to the beautiful people who work with elephants because clearly Karl would care about their work of giving dignity and joy to overworked, retired, sad, traumatized elephants...and I hope they can find him, and bring him forth, because I'm sure he'd care, beautiful soul that he is, I just wish I could find him...

  • The man who wrote this was and is a genius. I've had this song in my head all day thinking about how angry I am that I, the child of Malcolm-X, JFK-loving hippies in Washington, D.C. in 1965 has been so lied to, fooled. This isn't any Democratic party in the U.S. This isn't a Democracy. It's how much money AIPAC has to buy the votes of our senators. Just today, we voted to keep sending over 3 billion a year to Israel so they can slaughter more Palestinians. Monsters! Ship of Fools, oh yeah. WP!

  • @Medusafern we are suppose to be a republic of the people. By the people for the people of the people.

  • Take your hate somewhere else.

  • @kramermission1 uh, did you forget to reply to the specific post you're speaking to?

  • @Medusafern wow, this song is WAY over your head, huh?

  • Wonderful, marvelous

  • my favo WP tune, of this very undervalued band. love it!

  • Karl Wallinger is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. I don't agree with most of his politics, but I'd love to shake his hand.

  • It IS so nice to see those smiling faces. Compare it to the creepy music we have to watch today. They seem to try NOT to smile! Love this song.

Eddie... don't read this I'm mad at you.

  • ROAD TRIP! gonna have to make a mix tape with this on it for this summers road trip to rainbow!

  • great song, got to see mr Wallinger and co.horts on tour of Australia with Steely dan and my wish 'all came true'!

  • @owenonion

  • @voodoocan4

What the funk's he on about? Christ, people get deep on here..... It's a top tune. End of.

  • This song reminds me of the good times, when music used to be good stuff.

  • Karl Wallinger, the dude in the John Lennon glasses, is the one man genius behind this amazing band & album. Sounds like bubble gum music at first listen but open your heart & you will play this music for the rest of your life. So beautiful, melodically & in sentiment. I cry every time I really stop and listen to this album.

  • Ahhhh...Goodbye Jumbo album is great! WRDU in Raleigh memories

  • I dunno......somehow when the guy that writes his song, then sings it......it just sounds great to me. I am sure that someone else....who didn't write the song can technically sing it better. For me THIS is the original !!!

  • such a great sound, even my kids have fallen in love with it! Another upbeat, positive song from a great band. Makes you smile, like so many World Party songs :-) Wish they were still touring.

  • quality band .................quality tune.............deserved more recognition in their career

  • World Party are one of those bands that should be listened to, occasionally, through some good headphones, to hear the fantastic arrangements in detail. Amazing music!!! DTOX1972NI try and remember that Brian Kennedy couldn't put his heart and soul into this song, if world party hadn't written this song in the first place!!!

  • this song is better sung by brian kennedy who puts heart n soul in 2 it plzzzzzz try his version ya wont look back

  • this song is better sung by brian kennedy who puts heart n soul in 2 it plzzzzzz try his version ya wont look back

  • Great song from Goodbye Jumbo. Anyone have Take it Up? Can't find it on anywhere on here.

  • I saw this video when it was new on MTV and i fell in love with it directly. Its from the LP called Goodbye jumbo. One of my favourites, still after all these years!!!

  • Karl Wallinger was pretty much a one man band on this classic 1990 single. He obviously knew his onions!

  • great song.

    karl please come back!

  • luv it!,one of my all time favorites

  • great song......

  • this reminds me of a girl i really like but will probably never see again man thats sad for me

  • This came out in '90. Man time flies, I miss the old slacker college days.......

  • This is an AWESOME song....haven't heard it in ages, but I still know every word. And they are good people too. :)

  • omg i just found this song on the year one credits toXD

  • Wow! I haven't seen this in 20 FREEKIN' YEARS, Or heard the song anywhere in just as long. How funny that, even so, I still remember EVERY word of the chorus AND the main gtr. riff. Some things never leave you. And it's pretty safe to say that the 'Goodbye Jumbo' album, which spawned this song and another of their hits, "Way Down, Now", was one of the unsung classics of its time.

  • Saw Karl open for 10,000 Maniacs back in 1992 at Poplar Creek. Great show!

  • These guys are the best man, Karl is a legend, such coool harmonies....Proof that you can be a happy, smiley revolutionary. Get yourself to Galway sometime this year if you could. The Roisin Dubh welcomes it's old allies.

  • fuck i watched this video for no other reason than i liked it ,then watched a film (year one ) and it was on at the end of the fim. how crazy is that?imagine how messedup my haed was.lol .good song anyway

  • A buried gem in the world of music.

  • I always thought this song sounded like an Elton John tune from the early 70s.

  • i think this is where del amitry got insperation from. loved this the first time i heard it and still do.

  • thanks for the post

  • I am a huge ELO fan and walked into a record store when this album was new. They were playing it and I thought it sounded a bit like ELO. So I bought it....and loved it.

  • it does sound kind of like ELO, never thought of that :)

  • @mattanddi62 Hi.....yes this came out about the same time as Jeff Lynne's solo stuff and the first time I heard it I thought it was Jeff!!

  • This tune is my theme song.

  • Yes Karl Wallinger was in the Waterboys. He also wrote and recorded "Shes the One" as covered by Robbie Williams.

  • tune ,was the lead singer in the waterboys?

  • yep

  • This is such a great song, and Goodbye Jumbo is my favorite World Party album, though when I looked recently, it seemed to be out of print. well worth looking for though if you like this.

  • thanks xx

  • 1. put the junk in the box

    2. have her open that box

  • LMFAO!

  • Oh yeah...this song takes me back....loved it and it still rocks!

  • Great song! Sounds a little bit like Jeff Lynne.

  • never noticed that, but yea you're right! good ear!

  • Always loved this song... I bought when it came out on a format called "Cassingle".

...That's an electric car, right Karl?

  • I'd put a message of hope in that box and drive it all around the world

  • Awesome... Never heard of the group but great song though...

  • Album was GOODBYE JUMBO - great work. Worth also checking out BANG! it is something very special.

  • JUST heard this song for the credits for the movie "Year One."

Fell in love with it immediately.

  • @JennVOGUE that happened to me too! lol

  • @ornitorrinco74 haha! niiiiice.

  • @JennVOGUE i know same with me its so down to earth and lovely

  • @JennVOGUE EXACT SAME IDEA!

  • @JennVOGUE me 2

  • @JennVOGUE

    Same here!

  • @JennVOGUE It's so awesome, isn't it!!! (The song. And the movie too.) First time I heard it was in Bill Maher's "Religulous."

  • @A13XMAR5 Never knew that!

  • @JennVOGUE yep, but I believe it was only featured in the trailer and during the end credits of the movie.

in my opinion, year one and religulous are both awesome movies.

  • yes, better take a closer look......

  • Sounds a lot like ELO. He even has Jeff Lynne's voice. Pretty amazing!

  • Sounds a lot like ELO. He even has Jeff Lynne's voice. Pretty amazing!

  • Chris Sharrock indeed. The Icicle Works were his finest hour!

  • real music.

  • Is that Chris Sharrock of Icicle Works fame on drums?

  • i saw this group play on dec. 21 , 1996 at the mean fiddler club in london. i flew over there to check out the britpop scene as it was in it's height at the time. we checked out oasis/supergrass at wembley then after all the americans went back for christmas i found out this group was playing at a small club and we stayed. i wore this old time country western shirt (silk) that i bought in nashville and those brits looked at me like i was from outer space.

  • Jesus, did the late 80s rock or what? Jumbo was my favorite album of 1989 -- great fusion of old and new.

  • Great song, years later still great.

  • Okay, well first of all, I absolutely love this song and it can't possibly be better. They sound like a well put together fusion of the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Bob Dylan! And second of all, Youtube was being stupid in not letting me rate this again when I accidentally clicked a star only giving it one star! Well, I have to do the right thing and rate it without Youtube's jurisdiction and stupid restrictions by manually giving it FIVE STARS!!! * * * * * =D So up yours, Youtube. XD

  • May be, they had "that silly smile" on their faces because they were happy to make a video for a nice song. Being young men, with a life full of promises and a chance to be pop stars, what should they have thought about? Heidegger? Death coming?...

  • ...The point is: I just love the song!

  • Hare Krsna!

  • Hare Palm.

  • Nearly flawless

  • great cd - 'goodbye jumbo' 1989

the keyboardist from the waterboys. this cd features a yound sinead o'connor, among others... other tunes from this were 'thank-you world', 'way down', 'sweet soul dream'....

    worth getting. 10 / 10

  • Awesome tune! I heard this once when I was a child and remembered the lyrics about "put the message in to the box, put the box inside the car, drive the car around the world" I was to young to remember who it was by and asked loads of mates over the years about it and they all laughed at me & said it doesn't exist. But then I googled it and found it here!! HA HA Who's lauging now, eh?! Eh?! EH!!!!!!!

  • I'm mad at myself. Getting stuck in the daily rat-race and other distractions made me temporarily forget how much I love this tune and how great it is.

  • Thank you very much for this song.

Today I had a hard day. I am a community radio host talking about difficult topics, such as deep 911 conspiracy, mercury in vaccines, fluoride toxicity etc. A once friendly board member complained of ''too much conspiracy stuff'' and asked me to scale it back. I played 'Ship of Fools' as an angry reply...

And found this song later and it reassured me so much. The message is important. I will drive it until it's heard.

  • love you Karl, my eldest girl was born as this played in the background. we thought it was very appropriate

  • inspiring song

  • there is a message in this song :)

  • cute baby elephant. love this choon

  • This is pure music. I love it.

  • I love this song so much, ever since I first heard it. It just makes you feel really good for some reason even if you don't listen to the lyrics. They just look like really nice guys too, like a bunch of university students having a jam session.

    It's a classic.

  • This reminds me of stayin up late on sunday night to see 120 minutes on mtv.

  • and Matt Pinfield as the VJ...

  • Matt Pinfield? Shit, I remember when Dave Kendall was the VJ.

  • Your right...Adam Curry I think also at one point..

  • And Kevin Seal along with Dave Kendall as VJ

  • Oh yeah, those were the days, huh, as Archie Bunker would say. 120 Minutes rocked.

  • this song is like a girl i went out with you just cant foure get her ,over ten years gone by she just keeps comming back happy days

  • Agree with you that every now and then this song resurfaces from the subconscious. I always feel glad when it does.

    So uplifting. Love this track.

  • This song is like an old friend you kind of forget for a while, but you're very happy to suddenly remember and ring up for a nice chat. The whole "Goodbye Jumbo" album just says 1990 for me.

  • Awesome! Luv it! =]

  • Nice composition and band ! Phalaïna

  • Hope he got something from Sinead on the set with Private Revolution, looking her best.

  • But what was the fascination with Elephants, just curious.

  • Absolutely, these guys were in the mix experimenting with Peter gabriel though some Northern guy made this a hit too. The waterboys were good too.

  • Once, there were songs!!!

  • A classic, from circa 89-90. This song rocks like a Stones or a Beatles song, it's just infectious! I've always liked the lyrics to the song, an anthem for anyone that has a passion for what they believe in.

I miss this band and enjoyed them so much 20 years ago. Time to get "Goodbye Jumbo" once again....

  • This song and Ship Of Fools are two of the the most intelligent songs ever written. They are right up there with some of the Moody Blues best songs, which are many. Peace.

  • What a classic!

  • its all good. no point saying they are underrated cos whats the point? what counts as being rated these days ?

  • From my heart. Mr Wallinger is as good a song writer as St Mark Heard, Terry Scott Taylor, Randy Stonehill and Larry Norman and Randy Newman. Who? You may say. And rightly so. I think the worlds best kept secrets are also its best song writers. The above writers are by no means famous but many people say they are the greatest. I can not thank Karl enough for his input in my life. Bless him. Bless him. Bless him. I praise God Almighty for World Party and for you who listen. Thank you very much

  • great song, very laid back but energetic at the same time!

  • i saw these guys in boulder co., i think it was 1996? i was sitting on the wall and talking to this guy and i bought him a beer and when i handed it to him i said: "you look like glen frey from the eagles" and he said i am and we watched the concert together.....he loves World Party, as i do also!! Fun day!!

  • Thats a great story Jax833.. better than the usual rubbish comments I accidentally read on YouTube! Thanks!

  • that would be so badass. randomly meeting someone famous.

  • yeah, randomly meeting someone famous and them being into a group you like and being cool about it ...

  • damn...I remember this one! I was a junior in High School 1990 when I first heard this song...And they still sound as passionate...Awesome...I was watching "The Heartbreak Kid" with Ben Stiller and this tune came on and it was a Proustian moment except with sound...and not the smell of madelaines...but just as sweet and memomarable. Thanks for posting!

  • It's just so feel good..

  • still lovin' this record!

  • What a great tune. brought back memories of being teenager.

  • God, it's been 20 years. Seems like I only heard the song a few months back. Time passes so fast.

  • Good song, just wish World Party had a bit more edge, they were just so damned tasteful. I think they were a band people listened to alone, which is fine, but it's a bit of a solitary party. With a bit more more edge, they could have been shared, with the kids and more people would have got hear their message.

  • Well Jack, the ability to share outside the box only comes from within. Personally I have never cared who wanted to hear what I played, I always played it anyway.

  • I bought Bang and Goodbye Jumbo when a was 16, and remember trying to get my mates into them. I was listening to GBV's Bee Thousand as well, which was recorded on a 4-track, and was in someway intended to sound like Beetle's bootlegs. Would have been interesting to hear World Party cut an album of rough garage sounds.

  • felicia.........i love you! do you hear it? put the message in the box

  • i miss me in the 90's!

  • till you get heard!

  • ds!! miss ya

  • English classic!

  • i love this record!

  • World Party -- You are my favorite band ever. Thank you for all the beautiful music over the years.

  • Such a GREAT album. A+++

  • So, let me get this straight.. you gotta put the message in the box, then put that box into the car and then drive around the world? That's fine and all but gas prices are a bit pricey nowadays - so i'm off on my trip I guess...

  • the songs is this and I haven´t heard

  • no mamen ke buena rola putos traduscanlo pendejos

  • Five stars for this tune, thx Anam.

  • I understood Karl, who played in the Waterboys is attacking Mike Scott. Does anaybody know why?

  • Great band...miss them!

  • Warren Zevon + Bob Dylan = Karl Wallinger. Great tune.

  • really love this song... thank you!

  • If you liked this one, you'll most probably like Is It Like Today? by the same band. Absolutely great songs!
