As far as it not sounding like the other accents u hear u would be amazed by the range of accents there are in Britain just take some famous British people like Hugh Grant, Paul McCartney, and Idris Elba (of The Wire) and you realise how different their voices are. Also, check out Dizzee Rascal's voice, I've never met an American who isn't surprised by an urban london accent.
