"Livestock" remains my favorite live album! If you don't know the story, Roy was offered the job with the Stones to replace the late Brian Jones. He flat turned them down!! "Livestock" also has the great vocals of Billy Price!
I love the whole schtick where he has a sip of water and yawns etc all while pulling off his patented licks.I really cherish Roy's self titled Polydor album with Sweet Dreams on it which is my own personal favorite guitar instrumental.I wish Roy had stayed closer to his melodic inventions and kept the "tricks" to a minimum because I personally feel it had a gradual detrimental effect on his style.Of course this is all a matter of taste and in the end Roy was one of the true Greats of Guitar.
Will never understand how Robbie Robertson "outgunned" Roy in the legendary shoot out referred to in Levon Helm's book. Mr Buchanan - for me - always was, always will be, the guv'nor. Beyond words . . . it's art pure and simple.
Someone could tell me the lyrics of this song ? Because I'm french and I do not understand the accent ! I love this song and I would like to know what Roy said...
Bloody hell! Unbelievable playing and with a cheeky-chappy grin when he carries on soloing with his left hand to free up the right for a swig of beer. RIP Mr B
always so amazing....but damn, he needed a great singer to match all those original riifs. sorry, but his vocals were so bad, it would be better to just be all instumental.
I know virtually nothing about guitar playing, but I do know that he is doing all this essentially without "effects", and that is astounding to me. I have been a fan of Hendrix since I was a kid, and I love Beck, Mack, Santana etc., and this is downright amazing. Personally I may only enjoy Machine Gun and Hear My Train (live at Berkley) above this. I had Roys Bluz on cd, but to be able to watch him playing this makes the internet worthwhile...
I was blessed to see Roy 37 times, it was a church experience each time, no words can explain the loss to the world of true guitar fans, the generation following his passing has NO FREAKING idea what they missed, I used to hitch hk 10 hrs in the snow to see him tear up "my fathers place" in Rosyln NY, or the capitol in Passaic NJ.
Roxy theatre 1978 in L.A..... Roy had the whole room on the friggin ceiling....emotionally elevated to the point that when I looked around me, i saw tears in the eyes of several people. Bikers, bimbos, guitarists....it was a gush-fest......everybody got it...Roy connected with everyone in that room. I will always love Roy B.
For those critical of his vocals . . . blues tradition suggests that, if you stand up front with a guitar, you sing the damn blues. Many legendary acts - including Hendrix & SRV - were famously self-conscious about their voice, but sucked it up cause it was part of the gig. Kudos to all who had the balls to maintain the tradition instead of hiring a honey & lemon sipping, scarf-wearing, tambourine-slapping warbler who wouldn't know the difference between a Robert Johnson Tune and Auto Tune.
If you ever want to see a list of great music with nary a clunker in the bunch, play Six Degrees of Johnny Otis. The under-appreciated L.A. great was an unparalleled judge of talent and compiled a list of collaborations that could (and did) even make Frank Zappa drool. To save some suspense, if you play Six Degrees with Roy & Johnny, the answer is one. Only Johnny could could spot a 15 year-old hick from Pixley and see a future for him in R & B. He turns 90 later this month. You're welcome. ;)
Holy fudge Batman! This guy kicked the shitake mushrooms out of this song not to mention but I think I saw Chuck Norris there at the 5:25 minute marker. We need more players like this in today's music because this riff based stuff that they are passing off as musicianship SUCKS! I say bring back the real guitar players and all the children of the blues say AMEN!
Roy's totally doin' some lines before this show... But FUCKING BAD ASS~!!!!!!!!! I say "Suck on this, EVERY guitar player who ever lived". Eric Clapton? Go fuck yourself. If I want to be put to sleep, I'll listen to some fucking "Layla". Jesus, he's just fucking molesting that Telecaster... Look at those fools in the audience... "Yeah, fuck Richard Nixon, dude!" They dont even realize they are in the presence of a living god.
@maxxx1972 I'm sure that if you look closer you will notice that indeed, Roy's hands are pushing down frets and plucking/picking the strings. Thus, Roy is playing guitar.
@bigmuffmama I don't know whether or not he was abused by the police. People under the influence can do and say some dumb stuff. I do know that alcoholism was definitely a factor in Roy's life and probably contributed factor in his death.
The best el-guitar man who ever ticked sounds out of strings .....only my opinion two Roys must make it right Roy on strings (Guitar) Roy( The Voice) fuck imagine those two together !!!!!
I had no idea Ronnie Byrd Foster passed away..... I had the privilege of playing with him in Daytona at the Bank and Blues he was the real deal. May he RIP
Almost anybody can sound pretty good with hot pickups, a bunch of pedals, and lots of distortion, but when you plug a Tele straight into a clean amp, you better have your technique and your chops up to par or else you will empty the house quick. Roy had the chops AND the heart. So many people today could learn a lot from just LISTENING to this amazing gentleman.
Roy's manager at the time he was invited to play with the stones was Charlie Daniels, yes, the fiddler! Unfortunately, he didn't have Roy's best intentions at heart, and Roy never knew that he was sought after. Regardless, he was too stout for any band, and almost any guitarist... I bet Charlie learned a thing or two from the master...
How awesome was that? Stinging tone! How many people could play with that kind of sound? It would expose so many other guitar player's weaknesses and mistakes.
If it's something a little more 'conventional' you wanna listen to then search this out...'Why don't you want me'...also by Roy Buchanan featuring a stunning female vocal alongside his undoubted mastery of the blues :)
@maxxxx1972 You're either trying to see who you can stir up or you truly are some kind of pompous idiot... probably never played a guitar in your life... and if you do play, you probably think you're the greatest. "just tricks..this is not playing guitar!!" Why don't you enlighten us all with your genius. What IS playing guitar?
@lewis9754 Dude playing guitar is Clapton (do you know? former Cream guitarist!!), is Stevie Ray Vaughan, is Robert Cray, is Jeff Healey, is Duane Allman......wich planet you live on?
Has there ever been a more soulful player? Roy's playing has pretty much gone unoticed except by guitarist like myself. He has had major influence in my playing and is one of the greats in my book. The greats allways leave us too early but leave us with a wealth of great music.
@ojsojs he was offered a job with the stones one time, fell off the barstool drunk when rehearsing thus didnt get the job, a musician from london i once knew told me. tough luck. dont know if its really true but i cant blame him being not exactly what you call a teetotaler myself. a great guitarist no doubt
@noweedman I read/heard that he turned the Stones down because he thought they sucked as musicians. Or that is not to his caliber. It's quite possible I heard it on a well known blues radio program at Long Beach State College.....KKJZ.....formally KLON.
@Harpgrindin easily possible the outstanding guitarist he without a doubt was. too bad he´s not with us anymore. allegedly he had hung himself in a county jail after havin been arrested for drunken misconduct.
but that´s what they say.... we´ll never really know..
Jeff Beck is an incredible guitarist now....but when I listen too his magic...it just does not pull me in like Roys playing. Roy had that extra "mojo".
Ah yes: Austin City Limits in its Pre-Suck golden years....now it's nothing but shitty indie "rock" bands & "singer-songwriter" mopes who couldn't lay or sing if you held a gun to their heads.....
I had a wonderful affair with his son.........i called him my island boy.He was fine, fine, fine.Hey D, if yr out there,i still think of that summer with a big smile.......mmmmm.

Yeah. Music is all about technique. That's what matters most. Never let soul or emotion get in the way of proper technique.
(I'm being sarcastic. Don't start ripping on me.)

Jeff Beck is an incredible guitarist now....but when I listen too his magic...it just does not pull me in like Roys playing. Roy had that extra "mojo".

Some "idiot" posted that Roy was a good guitarist but was lacking in tenique.!.Don't know what was stuck in his ears...probable BS.
Roy had it all. Emotion, technique and incredible improvisation skills.

Check out the Roy Fulton vid (search Roy Buchanan lessons).
This guy is a player/tutor and demonstrates how Roy B did his magic. Very cool vid and it makes you appreciate Roy even more.

Love the part around 5:55 when he takes a sip of beer, plays one-handed, and grins at the audience...

Ah yes: Austin City Limits in its Pre-Suck golden years....now it's nothing but shitty indie "rock" bands & "singer-songwriter" mopes who couldn't lay or sing if you held a gun to their heads.....
