  • you pot it no you pot it no you pot it no you pot it 5.33 says it all. Ohhh what were the odds...

  • RIP Dennis Taylor. Well loved and missed by all.

  • @kgr00 He's still alive, isn't he?

  • @kgr00 hes not dead

  • who put together this clip is pure genius. thanks a lot

  • Last song tragedy by the bee gees

  • Looks like Steve Davis has 4 YouTube accounts.

  • Whoever wanted Davis to win is heartless.

Who wouldn't want the nice guy underdog to win?

  • @custardtin It is not heartless to want the best person in any sport to win. You are being way too sentimental. This is competition at THE highest level and it may come as a bit of a revalation to you but not everybody wants the under-dog to win. Get a grip.

  • @oneinamillion232

And that's why I hate most sport fans.

They take these things WAY too seriously.

The world is a serious place and snooker is a game.

    You get a grip.

  • @custardtin at that level it is not ,as you put it , 'just a game. ' It ain't monopoly they are playing !! Just a game, you must be kidding. Not at that level it isn't. The world isn't necessarily a serious place either. maybe it's you who is taking things far too seriously.

  • Anyone think this match could have been a fix to regain public interest in snooker

  • @jkamwal2 No. Not at all. You are just looking for a conspiracy

  • @oneinamillion232 No m8 i just heard someone mention it and wanted peoples opinions

  • Great memories. I stayed up till 12.30am to watch the final frame. Real sporting drana.

    RIP Ted Lowe.

  • Why did Davis get the stick he did, I really don't getit, for being a boring person, who knows if he's boring, didn't seem it in interviews or id it the inane ginger poking thing.

  • @26wordy - good point. On the after-dinner speech circuit, he enjoys playing on the 'boring' image for jokes. He was basically just so driven that he felt trying to be a personality would have effected his game.

  • @christschinwon I agree. Sportsman at the very top level are unbelievably driven and for them its winning or nothing. Think Woods, Senna , Hendry et al , they HATED to loose. They have so much confidence in their ability that they aren't bothered whether people think they have a likable personality or not.

  • First song is Johnny Come Home by Fine Young Cannibals

  • Amazing glasses

  • STEVE DAVIS SHAGGED MOTHER

  • gw'aan the Nugget!

  • Give names of all songs please.

  • music in 2:00 to 2:30 is ?

  • @SnufferRyanair Orinoco Flow by Enya

  • It's Orinoco flow enya my friend.

  • what is the music playing in the background around @2:13 ?

  • @buddyfan1959 Orinoco flow by enya

  • the greatest sporting moment of all time

  • Davis owes me 5 quid from this.

  • when a pro is actually aiming for flukes, they dont deserve to win.

  • @DLPBurke If it's aimed for, then it's not a fluke. A fluke is unplanned.

  • @maureenOWW I know full well what a fluke is. He was aiming for that shot because there was a CHANCE it would fluke and he was hoping had he missed that it would.

    That is a bad pro.

  • @DLPBurke No-one else appears to agree with you. How many times have you won the world championship, exactly? Just so I know your experience and credentials, you know.

  • @maureenOWW and why exactly would that mean anything? How many have you won? idiot.

  • Davis in the 80's was head and shoulders above the rest of the field by a mile. He did lose occasionally usually in the best of 9 matches and bearing this in mind this was the first ranking tournement final defeat for him. He had made over 200 century breaks in competitive play, more than doubling the next players century haul. Comparing his style of play in the 80's to Stephen Hendry's in the 90's and you can see how snooker has evolved. But this was the 80's and nobody played the game better.

  • How could snooker be any better!

  • Wow I remember staying up late to watch these two titans electrify the snooker auditorium. I’m still having Goosebumps watching that that “black ball” LOL. That was quite a comeback for Dennis Taylor digging his way though and up to the top to clinch the title.

  • amazing when you think,to win on the black after playing 35 frames.

  • 25 years passed but still my heart beats doubles by watching this video

  • FUSS OVER NOTHING!

  • OMG THE BEST FINAL!

  • i watched the 25th annivarsery thing they did on this match , and sommit doesnt feel right about thi smatch , ok ill say it , i think things happend that shouldent have yes , FIXED as in from the steve davis camp side

  • greatest match ever. still think davis should have got that pot. so pleased for Taylor. amazing stuff.

  • just watched the reunion match on eurosport. Great stuff, good humour

Shame I was still in my mothers womb when this all happend in '85. My ma says she would always stay up til late, waiting for my dad to come home from work, watching the snooker even though she had no interest in the sport.

It's probably why I now have such a love for the game...

  • Today BBC is showing the 85' black ball final documentary. Could someone upload it somewhere? Unfortunately I can't see BBC here :(

    Would appreciate it !

  • My goodness! Was that Gary Lineker in there too?? I Didnt know he was a snooker enthusiast/fan as well.

  • @jbdoggy Yes,apparently he's made a century break

  • @saintcasper91 Yea. I looked it up & found an interview with Willie Thorne. Willie said Gary made a 134 break against him & won a few frames as well. Willie regards Gary as better than the club players. So looks like Gary isnt just a fan....he's also a player of a fairly advanced level.

  • 2:15 can anyone name the track? thanks

  • great final x

  • ha lol

  • great vid - great game

  • Cudowna gra na czarnej. Ten pojedynek to snookerowa poezja.

  • legends

  • Going for a fluke highlights the severe flaw in the rules here

  • Excellent video. Thanks for posting. I was a bit young to have watched it at the time. Obviously i've seen the ending many times, but i can't believe some of the other things i didnt know, such as Davis winning the first 8 frames. You can feel the tension just by watching this now!

  • The second greatest event that year was Live Aid.

  • Bljampy Q2 :D

  • Davis and Taylor are playing a 25 year anniversary exhibition match at this year's World Championship. =)

  • @m214782 WOW really? Cool man! When is gonna happen?

  • @m214782 have you seen it ? I just saw it, and taylor performed the exact opposite of the match in 1985, haha. in this rematch he potted 3 black balls ; 2 perfect doubles, 1 longpot, and missed the grand last shot.

great too watch these 2 snookerlegends play again.

  • @Aeradill Haha, I saw the rematch too... Taylor potted every miss and misses every pot! I also noticed their commentaries were very similar to this video.

  • @lkfcalvin true, the whole davis thing walking in slomo to the table, feeling the hands were not his own, and his legs were carrying him.. same as 25 years back :P

  • @Aeradill : Saw it, in China! And Steve was right, not much of their dialogue was translated to Chinese. It was entertaining and brought back a lot of memories.

  • @m214782 just watched it very good and was a good laugh

  • @m214782 lol. Just watched it and it was sooooo funny. Taylor could not miss a shot. They done both the doubles to show everyone what the shots were like and he potted the one in the middle and the double in the bottom left. lol

  • @m214782 ye i saw the exhibition mathc where they reanacted ti , one of the funniest things ever

  • @m214782 I just saw it

    it was so funny lol

  • Seen it at one of the mid-session intervals. It was absolutely hilarious.

Dennis Taylor inadvertently potted all the crazy doubles he originally tried on the final black, then missed the final shot that gave him the title in '85...

  • orinoco flow and intense build up to the final black -> simply epic.

  • I wanted Davis to win this final but I couldn't believe the bad lock he had in the later stages of ths match. Davis should have won 18-15 when he played a pressure shot on the green only to snooker himself behind the blue. If he had hit the blue half ball, the brown would have been on and the match won.

  • Seen this infamous final frame thousands of times on video & DVD - Question is,when are BBC/YouTube gonna upload the the Davis-Taylor sequel, which was the 1985 Rothmans Grand Prix Final - which also went to a decider!!

  • why did Dennis use such huge glasses ?

  • @dmtharpua It's because when he cued up to a ball wearing normal glasses, he could see over the top of them as he eyed up the pocket/ object ball and so it'd be out of focus. With these glasses everything was kept in focus no matter how low down he cued/ how far away the object ball/ pocket was.

  • interesting. thanks @cymru

  • @dmtharpua he cant play snooker with small glasses, get it?

  • Davis quote "The more I practise, the luckier I get". I was only young when my mum let me stay up for this. Even though I was 12, I could see how the media controls ppl. E.g why is jimmy white the ppls champ? Because we are told that he is. This match was 1985 but we are still in 1984 lol. -_-

  • Losing that final got him what he had never had before. Acceptance from the media and commentators. They were SO against him before that. (jealousy?) they always drew attention to any little bit of fortune. Taylor missed 2 doubles and it went safe. (fortuitous?) ev1 wanted him to lose, but now they love him. Aren't ppl sheep. Lol. Epic match though.

  • What is that upbeat music? I mean the music playing when Dennis Taylor wins the match? NOT tragedy, the song after that when he celebrates. What IS that?

  • That song is "When the going gets tough" by Billy Ocean.

  • Billy Ocean.......... When the going gets tough the tough get going........is the song being played at the end

  • billy ocean when the going gets tiugh the tough get going

  • The real reason Steve lost this one was because he got too complicated with his breakbuilding, trying to nudge his next red off the pack. The only one ever to do it and it worked brilliantly for eight frames but then it all went wrong. If it had worked I think it would have changed snooker forever.

  • @moneygob interesting point.........I never thought of it like that...i came in on a saturday evening and it was 8.0 and davis went to pot a green, clear up colours and win another frame...he missed and the rest was history as they say.....amazing...the beauty and drama of sport

  • any way of downloading full match?

  • What a shot at 3:03 !!!! WHOA!!

  • A GREAT GAME! cant wait to watch the full game!!

  • I think this video is from 2004

  • Probably there will EVER be!!

  • The best final ever in Snooker history!

  • Music in this video is absolutely PERFECT. Well done to whoever made it.

  • the bbc made it lol

  • I know... I was using irony to respond to an earlier - rather ignorant and foul mouthed - comment about 3 down from here.

  • i agree very good choice of music usually ppl put stupid music on vids

  • they called him intresting because he always intresting snooker

  • Music in this video is absolute fucking SHIT. Fuck off to whoever made it. Otherwise, this is one of the best moments in snooker.. was watching it live in our living room as a little kid.

  • BBC made the vid

  • Agreed. the use of Tragedy by Steps completely ruins the sense of occasion.

  • I think you'll find that it's the original Bee Gees version.

  • What dick chose the Enya song to accompany this clip: it didn't come out till a few years later! And it's bloody annoying

  • even a blind cock called dennis could find a corn .........

  • hey...is there everybody who know the name of the song in this vid?

    thx

  • Johnny Come Home by Fine Young Cannibals

  • oricana flow by enya

  • 1. Johnny Come Home - Fine Young Canniballs

    2. Enya - Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)

    3. Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere

    4. BeeGees - Tragedy

    5. Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough

  • That shot was not easy!

  • We'll never see another final like this. The 85 final was "the" classic. It was so dramatic. The final frame, the final black ;)

  • Imagine if there was betting in play back in 1985! What price Dennis after that first session?

  • What a great match, what a golden moment of sports history! Great documentary too! What's the song from 1:32 on?

  • Orinoco Flow by Enya

  • <3 Enya

  • Unbelievable final, brilliant stuff.

  • 1. No-one cares

    2. Kill yourself

  • fuck u

  • Fuck YOU.

  • i was just sayin that this was a great final and many people agreed with me so if you dont agree fuck u and go suck ur dad off!

  • Bullshit, you copy/pasted fucking spam into the comments. Go look.

  • Look below this comment:

    i clearly say:

greatest final ever, did you know that 18 million people stayed up until 1 am to watch this final?

  • greatest final ever, did you know that 18 million people stayed up until 1 am to watch this final?

  • @DarkNinjaO1 And I was one of them!

  • @DarkNinjaO1 yep even me and i was only 7 :oD

  • Great memories, before the invasion of Hendry and even worse, his clones (Doherty, Higgins etc...)

  • hendry will beat davis anyday

  • An often asked question,i reckon technically its impossible to split them but i think Davis was a better matchplay tactician and this would have given him the crucial advantage over "Fish Face", as my mum calls him...no idea where she got that from!!!

  • Anyone know anything about the movie they're making about this? Someone told me it's in pre-production with Brad Pitt as Dennis and Vinnie Jones as Davis.

  • you're having a laugh right?

  • Is John Williams doing the musical score?? lol

  • good for dennis, very likeable guy, and those glasses still make me chuckle :)

  • LOL JOKER with the finger up :D Steve davis man he was truly invincible in his days haha

  • Great end to the game, you couldn't write such a script, having it end with the deciding black ball of the deciding frame. I never realised Davis was 8-0 up from the first session.

  • How couldn't you write it?

Basically every fictional sports story would end with it coming down to the last thing possible.

I think if anyone was asked to make up a tense snooker match, it would obviously come down to the last black in the last frame.

  • I think he means, if you did write it, no-one would believe it. You know, truth is stranger than fiction.

    Fantastic final by any measure.

  • greatest moment in snooker ever..

  • I'm surprised that Gary Lineker didn't remember this famous memorable final

  • I like Dennis, but I think he got lucky in this game. Steve should of gone 9 and 10 nil up. Then he would've won 18-3.

  • My mum was six months pregnant when this happened before giving birth to me

  • yeah and?

  • I'm saying six months before I was born

  • I remember Davis building up a 8-0 lead but still felt he would slip in the 2nd session. He did and Davis looked a bag of nerves for the rest of the match, but he was so unlucky not to have won the match 18-15.

  • At 1.07, that song is Orinoco flow by Enya and at 7.00 it is when the going gets tough by Billy Ocean

  • This was the second time Dennis Taylor made it to the final of the World championship. He first made it to the final in 1979 but he lost against Terry Griffiths

  • This has to be one of the greatest sporting moments of all time.

  • i have a friend named dennis taylor lol thats why i looked this up

  • David Vine is dead

  • dennis taylor is a fighter...two great players..

  • The song that starts at 7.00 was `played on some BBC1 continuity clips from 1989 that have been uploaded here.

  • This is certainly one of snooker's most famous memorable moments.

  • Steve Davis is a great player! What a sportsman! Dennis must have had nerves of steal to catch up from 8-0 :)

  • the best final. Davis concentrating on safety with the last black but taylor going for it - quality. But under that sort of pressure it wouldn't suprised me if taylor had missed that final black

  • i know it's rude to ask this kind of question at this magnificent video, but what's the name of the song?

  • Fecking researchers!...at least make sure ALL the incidental records you use are from the year in question to build up the atmosphere. 'Orinoco Flow' was from 1988 not 1985. Call me a nerd but it bugs me!

  • Great vid - great story - but you really can't beat the uninterrupted version, with the magnificent Ted "Understated" Lowe commentary. Absolutely peerless.

"NO!" when Davis misses the cut, and " He's done it!" when Dennis - well, when Dennis does it.

    Magical stuff.

  • You have to give Taylor huge credit, from 8-0, but if that green had gone in and 9-0 do you think Steve would have won it easily, 23 years ago today, the grand finale, the greatest grand finale got going

  • Brilliant vid!

  • incredible match, just incredible

... and i love the glasses

  • does anyone ave a clip of when dennis aylor and willie thorne are commentating and dennis falls over and grabs willies tie and nearly chokes him its so funny

  • dam i wish i was born for this match

  • these are by far the most ugliest glasses i have

ever seen. xD but the match was reaaaally exciting, i wish, i had have seen this..

  • just bumped my head on wardrobe watchng that missed double. effng shot. nce attempt dennis

  • 22 years ago god bless us member it well sat up late willing taylor home. unbelievable srry for you steve.but man wanted higgns to kck your ass you was that good watching dennis comng back from 8-0 down.only one guy was supportng sorry steve.btw dont want to remind you most of us young folk run about for weeks after little finger up.:)

  • You really think they can make something like that up?

  • It wasn't! Okay?

  • i so wih i had been alive to see that, it all looks so easy on tele, but then it's just so hard on the real thing! you wonder how large people like higgins and murphy stretch so much!

  • this was the best final i've ever seen

    taylor deserved to win

  • Hey guys, what is the name of the song played during the last great black?

    Thanks

    PS: great match!

  • Videoclip soundtrack:

    1. Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home

    2. Enya - Orinoco Flow

    3. Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere

    4. Bee Gees - Tragedy

    5. Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going

    Hope this helps.

    Best final ever!

  • best game in da world

  • Crumbs, I remember this. Snooker was huge for a couple of years - snooker and darts. Don't know why. Perhaps it was the people.

  • Docklands, Belfast, 00.05, Monday morning, late April 1985. A rap comes to the door. Of all times to be dragged away: who on earth can that be? It was the parish priest and his curate desperate to see the conclusion of that frame on our TV! Maybe divine intervention caused Steve to overcut the black after all.

  • Although i wanted Steve to win as an 11 year old kid....... i am now glad that Dennis won - a man who seized his moment - and deserved it. A truely brilliant sporting occasion.
