Well, thadxxx, the 70s generation was raised (mostly) in Christian homes. While attached to their "Christ culture", at the same time they were "seeking" for themselves. Then (it seems) a kind of confulsion ensued, and as a result we (of the 70s) gave birth to another generation which was more defined. They were either for Christ or they completely didn't care for or weren't interested. I'm not sure if this makes any sense to you, but it seems to make sense to my children who are of your age.
@Phikay1 . I think I understand you. The majority of kids/families in the 70's had some official religious afflilation. Where as today and greater % of children/families do not have any religion connection. But, back to the music. The closest spiritual hit was "WE ARE THE WORLD" from the '80's which was about the African famine. I guess Christian music (which I really don't listen to) just doesn't cross over at all to Top 40 these days.
it seems like the early 70's had lost of religious songs with Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. . What happened? There's absolutely no mainstream/crossover songs that have any religous overtunes today??
@thadxxx The music today is produced largely by children of baby boomers, who were heavily influenced by the secular left and are pulling society in that direction. Judeo-Christian religion has been replaced with leftism and its associated religions, such as environmentalism. There was evidence of this in the boomers' music of 60s, but in the 70s you could see a reaction back toward religiosity.
Christianity was real inclusive in those days. Many of the hippies and the 60s generation were "Jesus Freaks". Very Christ centered, focused on things that were important to Him, like love and the rejection of materialism. The christian Right destroyed all that, and the rise of secularism is a result of the disgust many feel at materialistic, militaristic churches today, not leftist conspiracies. That's a real shame, because most people still like Jesus no matter what.
@happyjonnie The so-called "materialistic" churches you speak about are among the most charitable organizations around today. Statistically the "materialistic" Christian right give more charity than the secular left. Secularism is a result of the universities which are steeped in Marxism. And the fact that you fail to see the rise of leftism all around you indicates that you have no clue as to what it is.
@MrTrashcan1 I fail to see how environmentalism is an "Associated Leftist Religion"..My own family is of Native American and European descent.I am personally a Native Pagan,Herb using, conservative with a very strong sense of connectivity with my natural surroundings...I don't feel leftist......Last Presidential election,I voted for the Vet with my still mostly dark long hair and A.I.M. shirt.
@Anaris10 I'm talking about "radical" environmentalism. The kind that puts nature ahead of people. The kind that cries about mercury toxicity in the air and then FORCES people to use light bulbs that contain mercury. The kind that banned DDT so that thousands of Africans they pretend to care about actually died of Malaria. That kind of environmentalism. That's not you and it's not me. I bike and hike through the woods regularly and feel very close with nature.
While I am not positive, it was probably first performed on Sing Along Jubilee a CBC television show out of Halifax. Both Gene and Anne were regulars. Anne eventially married the host of that show Bill Langstroth.
@Mr.TraschCan - yup - I meant my comment as a reply to someone else, but I didn't know how to address it correctly. Anyway, ocean's version is the first 45rpm record I bought when I was a kid :)
It was Anne Murray that did it first, she has said so herself in many of her concerts, but you're right, Elvis did an early version too. He was probably the second in line after Anne. However, I think Ocean did it best.
I just learned that this song is a cover! It was first recorded by Anne Murray! I knew that Murray did a version, but I didn't know until recently that it came before this one.
Murray, herself, said that she was the first to do this song.
However, I think Ocean's cover version, heard here has much more energy, and I like it more. Anne's original is pretty good, but this is even better! One of the rare instances where a cover outshines the original. Written by Gene McLellan
@cmulwee001 I can think of lots of examples (including others of my postings) where the cover was better than the original. Yes, Anne Murray may have done this one first, but it was Ocean that had the hit and got the radio airplay.
Cyndi Lauper's huge lighthearted dance pop hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' from 1984, had been previously been recorded as a hard-core punk song by Robert Hazzard and The Heroes.
Gladys Knight's monster soul classic, "Midnight Train To Georgia" was originally a country(yes, COUNTRY!) song called "Midnight Plane To Houston" sung by it's writer, Jim Weatherly.
"Love Letters.. by Pat Boone, originally by Ted Black's Orchestra in 1931.
Me encanta esta cancion...gracias a quien la compartió ..a quien la escribió y sobre todo a quien la interpretó..DIOS LOS BENDIGA por ser tan lindos y dejar cosas bellas en su camino.
"Now, for all you folks who are stuck in the 60's, and glad to be there, here's an uplifting little tune to get your day on the right track as you walk, ride or drive to that special place--some folks call it WORK. Enjoy!" (just practicing)
This inspirational classic masterpiece reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 1971. Its a shame you almost never hear it played on the radio anymore. Its message is one I believe everyone should hear.
I'm very grateful to have found this song on this Easter weekend. Thank you for sharing it with us, Mr. Trashcan!
amen
