This is very nice. It is old though. A couple of shops in Maryland have done variations of this. I first saw this paint job on a 300ZX. It is sick but I would only do it for a show car. Accident or dent and back to the paint shop.
@jasong2xaccount - I built storage cabinets that allow a 200" long car to fit (stock Mustang is around 190"). The Saleen kit modifies the body to around 196" leaving very little room. Wasn't interested in tearing out the cabinets and certainly not willing to park the car outside.

"Pearlescent" is the older term when they used to grind up pearl to put in paint. Most paints today are synthetic-base and can do some versatile coloring (like iridescent).

@ministryofp4in We have a 1996 Mystic Cobra and a 2004 Mystichrome Cobra and have had repairs done on each. The Chromalusion paint is super easy to match. You just paint whatever panel is damaged it always blends. The paint is prism cut flakes in clear paint over a black base. The prism flakes are the color. The drawback is the paint is expensive.

My car is the same exact color. Its made by a company called AlsaCorp. The name of the paint is called Color Force 3 and the color is called Cool Lava. 400 bucks for a gallon and thats with the reducer, check my car out and the web site PEACE!
People are more shocked by the price of the paint job ($18K); few comments on how ugly it looks. I think it looks interesting for a show car, but would never drive it on the street - the repair cost of that paint job would be horrendous.

I used to paint and while 18k is ridiculous have you ever painted a car start to finish in house of kolor? A Silver base and enough candy to do this car will run around 3500-4000 just for paint, reducer, clear, hardner, and the special primer. Plus the labor involved in using hok paint correctly is very exhaustive. Any mistake will be as clear as day when you're done. But it's dealer installed plus a 60k car so what do you expect lol.

Maaco wanted $1K to paint my wife's 91GT hood - ONLY THE *hood*. Strip paint, prep, basecoat, and clear - $1K was the estimate in 2007. Those $400 entire car paint jobs don't include many things (bodywork, prep, single stage enamel, etc.).
BASF made this paint specifically for the 1998 Saleen s351 SR. It was the first car to recieve the paint job. Back then it was called Rainbow. and the -Green/Blue/Orange- (BASF original test and mass produced paint scheme) was called Mystic, for the 1998 mustang cobra. shortly afterwards the paint scheme could was found on motorcycle helmets, then later other vehicles.
well for my 1997 f150 i just had stock painted all over again with more gloss shine mirror looked to it it cost me 5 thousand but u always want factory because they always do the best

Don't get me wrong - out of that $18K, I'm sure that $5K is for the *priviledge* and *exclusivity* of the Saleen brand. But stripping all the paint off the car, possibly removing glass, trim, etc, is pretty labor-intensive. If they DON'T strip the paint, then YES, that $18K is WAY over priced.

a car is shiny because it is smooth not because it is any more reflective than say a piece of white paper
in reality the opposite is true and the paper is more reflective but its diffuse reflection.
reflection has nothing to do with how mirror like a surface is, ALL colored surfaces are reflective.
a red object is red because its reflecting back only the red light and absorbing all other wavelengths.
a pure white object reflects all wavelengths.

My car is the same exact color. Its made by a company called AlsaCorp. The name of the paint is called Color Force 3 and the color is called Cool Lava. 400 bucks for a gallon and thats with the reducer, check my car out and the web site PEACE!

People are more shocked by the price of the paint job ($18K); few comments on how ugly it looks. I think it looks interesting for a show car, but would never drive it on the street - the repair cost of that paint job would be horrendous.

the best part on spot repairs is it always matches. u can scuff the area and spot it in and clear the panel. been paintin 20 years.
and 18k is sad the paint alone is only around 2500 so somebody got raped

@thumper5311 horrendous lol....u would have to get the whole car sanded down, primered, painted, clear coated, and then wet sanded/ buffed =( the car looks gorgeous tho!!

I used to paint and while 18k is ridiculous have you ever painted a car start to finish in house of kolor? A Silver base and enough candy to do this car will run around 3500-4000 just for paint, reducer, clear, hardner, and the special primer. Plus the labor involved in using hok paint correctly is very exhaustive. Any mistake will be as clear as day when you're done. But it's dealer installed plus a 60k car so what do you expect lol.

They are F'n Crazy ! I own and manage a paint & body shop, yet cannot understand how they could charge 18,000 for a paintjob ! I dont even charge half that ! Ridiculous !

It's the Saleen name - just like a Gucci purse is 5X in price compared to a 'normal' purse.
Anyway, a moot point; I believe Saleen is experiencing financial turmoil - I doubt many cars have this option ordered.

I paint for a living, and that is fucking nuts. goddddd! No way im spending 490 for a little pint of paint. and then you need reducer, hardner, and sealer, clear hardner and sealer, primer and all the shit for that. anymoor to paint just a basic color and buy all the shit is a little over a thousand dollars. go see if Macco and shoot that color for 400 bucks lol.

$400 at Maaco? Not here in San Jose, California:
Maaco wanted $1K to paint my wife's 91GT hood - ONLY THE *hood*. Strip paint, prep, basecoat, and clear - $1K was the estimate in 2007. Those $400 entire car paint jobs don't include many things (bodywork, prep, single stage enamel, etc.).

BASF made this paint specifically for the 1998 Saleen s351 SR. It was the first car to recieve the paint job. Back then it was called Rainbow. and the -Green/Blue/Orange- (BASF original test and mass produced paint scheme) was called Mystic, for the 1998 mustang cobra. shortly afterwards the paint scheme could was found on motorcycle helmets, then later other vehicles.

Maybe so, but the bulk of cost is likely in body prep (paint strip, surface prep). The LABOR is always the bigger part of the cost.

yep but theres no damn way i would ever charge somebody 15k for that paint job. 5 or 6 maybe 7k is realisticbut not 15. im a body man by trade and ill be painting my truck like that in about 2 weeks ill have less than 1500 in it when im done but being my truck theres no labor charge like you said but the only diff between this job and a standard base clear job is 2 coats of iradescent

Don't get me wrong - out of that $18K, I'm sure that $5K is for the *priviledge* and *exclusivity* of the Saleen brand. But stripping all the paint off the car, possibly removing glass, trim, etc, is pretty labor-intensive. If they DON'T strip the paint, then YES, that $18K is WAY over priced.
