Breathing cold air during physical exertion results in constriction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles, regardless of having an asthma - phisiological condition. So, You'll not only have the same lounge capacity as people that don't have the asthma problem due to application of asthma medicine, but also use of asthma medicine (for instance symbicort) prevents bronchioles from constriction during race. That is real advantage.

Because asthma isn't often a genetic disability. Winter athletes get it from hard training in cold conditions, which is rough for the lungs.
Those who takes Beta2-Agonists medicine 12 hour before the race are protected in two ways better then the healthy ones. First of all the lung capacity has been increased in the moment of start (same would have happened with the healthy organism). Secondary that drug gives a long-term protection against such of physiological factors created by cold air like bronchospasm, fatigue. That protection a healthy person doesn't have. Too much of advantage. Björgen looks like a guy on roids.
@yb3000 Norway (and Sweden) is a cold country, that's why our cross country skiers tend to develop cold-induced asthma. Kowalzcyk is a doper (dexamethasone ) and a terrible loser, which seems to be the case for a lot of Polaks in here.
The other girls spend the whole year training in the same enviroment as Scandinavians, so this is not the case. The real problem is letting some skiiers take advantage of the asthma medicine. The only way to make this sport 100% clean, is to make one rule, ITS EITHER NOBODY OR EVERYBODY! Lungs are as important for skiiers as legs are for runners... And people with artificial legs can't run in normal races. WADA is humble towards Norway, same way as FIA is humble towards Ferrari.

Appreciate your sarcasm but you have a point here. Let everybody use it and we will see the outcome. If thats useless for healthy ones then the rest of excuses will be just lame. As a person who trains aerobic sports i have to admit that those drugs help me in few of my fights and runs. I felt like energizer bunny, escalated my stamina to the limits i never experienced before. I quit it because it was extremly addictive and it just wasn't feel right.

Today its another story trough because all the limits in blood-value etc etc. Astmha-spray is the same. In the 90s you didn't need any certification and the norm among XC skiers was to pump in 60000 nl/g. Today you need a certification (currently 43% have it in the WC) but most importantly you cant use more then 1000 nl/g. If you do its considering doping.

@AidPatrol A disability that can be fixed. According to your stupid opinion, an athlete should have to attend the Paralympics if he/she damages his/her leg, rather than to fix it. Because asthma isn't often a genetic disability. Winter athletes get it from hard training in cold conditions, which is rough for the lungs.

Those who takes Beta2-Agonists medicine 12 hour before the race are protected in two ways better then the healthy ones. First of all the lung capacity has been increased in the moment of start (same would have happened with the healthy organism). Secondary that drug gives a long-term protection against such of physiological factors created by cold air like bronchospasm, fatigue. That protection a healthy person doesn't have. Too much of advantage. Björgen looks like a guy on roids.

@yb3000 Norway (and Sweden) is a cold country, that's why our cross country skiers tend to develop cold-induced asthma. Kowalzcyk is a doper (dexamethasone ) and a terrible loser, which seems to be the case for a lot of Polaks in here.

The other girls spend the whole year training in the same enviroment as Scandinavians, so this is not the case. The real problem is letting some skiiers take advantage of the asthma medicine. The only way to make this sport 100% clean, is to make one rule, ITS EITHER NOBODY OR EVERYBODY! Lungs are as important for skiiers as legs are for runners... And people with artificial legs can't run in normal races. WADA is humble towards Norway, same way as FIA is humble towards Ferrari.

Give me a proove that after taking that medicine they are just 100% not 110% or 120%. Strangely after bad start in Liberec the whole Norwegian team got sick of asthma, now having 4 sick girls in first 6 in the world?! In most cases this is an exercise asthma, just a few % under the norm, but as Björgen said the medicine gave her 20% extra. Well, do you comprehend where the cheaters have advantage or is it just too profound knowledge for you to even think about. Cheers to open minded.

Appreciate your sarcasm but you have a point here. Let everybody use it and we will see the outcome. If thats useless for healthy ones then the rest of excuses will be just lame. As a person who trains aerobic sports i have to admit that those drugs help me in few of my fights and runs. I felt like energizer bunny, escalated my stamina to the limits i never experienced before. I quit it because it was extremly addictive and it just wasn't feel right.

@yb3000 It's not a question of your personal anecdote, this is a scientific question and anti-doping rules and guidelines must be based on scientific evidence. Experiments show that there is no significant performance-enhancing effect of asthma medicine in therapeutic doses unless you have asthma.

Marit Bjørgen is one of the biggest shame of sport. You will see someday Marit in TV crying and apologizing like Marion Jones. New way for take whole golden medals- take drugs on Asthma and run like rocket to the grave... It's very very sad too see how sport is changing. And of course beauty side ... she looks like Schwarzenegger not like woman. In my opinion she rather should represent Norway in strongman contest.

@davd1986 i Can honestly say i dont trust Anybody before 2003. That includes Daehlie or whoever. Today its another story trough because all the limits in blood-value etc etc. Astmha-spray is the same. In the 90s you didn't need any certification and the norm among XC skiers was to pump in 60000 nl/g. Today you need a certification (currently 43% have it in the WC) but most importantly you cant use more then 1000 nl/g. If you do its considering doping.

@dzubol88 asthma medicine only help if you actually got asthma, it doesn't make your body or lounges function any better if you don't have asthma. So if Marit Bjørgen didn't have this disease, but still took the medicine it wouldn't do her any good. It would actually worsen her. It's one thing to be a sore loser, but to create rumors like that is just disgusting.
