I think it's sad that people would attribute this song to Matthews Southern Comfort, whose cover of it was actually pretty dreadful, or refer to it as "Stardust." The song was written by Joni Mitchell, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the 20th century. It was made popular initially by Crosby, Stills and Nash, but later, Joni's version became very popular as well.
I could be wrong but think the song was written by the canadian songwriter Joni Mitchell under the title Woodstock, but other singers and bands played it too like Matthews Southern Comfort of whom my friend Mike was influenced.
Joni Mitchell wrote it shortly after the Woodstock festival because she missed it
