  • From a theory perspective, can you explain the little riff at 4:06 - 4:08? it sounded great!

  • Very smooth playing and nice mellow tone.

  • Very smooth playing and nice mellow tone.

  • Never have I seen such an amazing bass player. Now that I have watched all of your vids, or at least most of them, you make me want to buy a : Fender, P bass, Maple fingerboard, Badass II, with black mark lines (hope I can call it that way). Sorry for my english dude, I never comment such videos, but I wanted you to know that you are a special bass player with a badass smooth sliding. Cheers from Uruguay (yes, the country that was 4th at south africa)

  • Excellent cover. I don't think it could be done much better than that. Also, I was wondering how you made it. I mean the microphone that you used and the source for the original music itself. Was it coming off a stereo? Keep us the good work.

  • are your knobs stock? if not, this could be the answer to my unidentifiable bass

  • smooth stuff, chief; keep it going!!!

  • One final comment. Use an HD camera next time, so I can follow your fingers better! They are a blur!

  • GREAT job in picking out the song ending bass lines. The original recording is not great, and at the end the left and right channels seem to switch back and forth making it even more difficult to hear what's being played. Btw, I highly recommend software such as Transscribe, where one can slow down the recording (without changing the key), bump the song up an octave, and filter out the high frequencies. It makes a world of difference in being able to hear the bass-line better.

  • No one can play the song perfect, except for Jones. BassManOnTheHill plays it excellent, and I'm being picky since I can't play it good yet. At the 1 minute mark (measure 25) there is a walk-up from the low E to the next octave. On the original recording Jones does not play the G# twice, but plays more of a ghost note on the second G#. BassMan also rushes (or plays too fast) the two E notes in measure 26. But I have not seen anyone play it better than the BassMan (except Jones) .Excellent!!

  • I heard no faults what so ever! this is amazing

  • I have to assume that the 3 dislikes just don't care for the song, because you absolutely nailed it - even the slight variations that JPJ threw in occasionally. Excellent !

  • ORGasmic

  • nice ' this is the best cover so far in you tube.....

  • Nice, I'm looking to either get a trumpet or bass guitar for Christmas, is bass easier than regular guitar? I do own a guitar and a alto saxophone.

  • Holy Sh*t Unbelievable! Coolest thing I ever saw!

  • Nice to see a GOOD bass player!!!

    Excellent Job!!

  • OMG, breathtaking, totally nailed to the point JPJ would be amazed! Dude, what an inspiration you are - thx!

  • Excellant playing, sound and video. Can you tell me where you got the tab for this version of Ramble On? Thanks!

  • That was awesome dude. Especially the last few bars, man john paul jones was really throwin down. You nailed it. I subscribed. May i requet some more glenn cornick(jethro tull). And Paul( the beatles). Man that cat trows down too. Check out lovelyrita. Good job

  • awesome !!!!!! one of the coolest bass lines, you nailed it

  • That was awesome.

  • jesus, very clean and spot on. and looks hard to play

  • your tone sir...

  • Niice one man! Just uploaded a cover of this myself. :) not as good as this though!

  • what brand of nickel strings are they?

  • @kingkeith666 These were DR Sunbeams I'm pretty sure. I switch from time to time,

  • Good job and sweet bass!

  • well done

  • I might have said this before ... but I'll say it again anyway ... that is CLEAN playing. Love it ! Well done.

  • justice done. thanks for a look at how it's done.

  • His hand at 0:18-0:21 looks like it goes lightspeed!

  • Would it be sacrilege for me to learn this with a pick, or maybe just impossible lol?

  • I've always thought that though it's popular among big Zep fans, Ramble On still doesn't get its proper due in the Zep catalogue. It's truly among their greatest work. It's alos probably Jones' most mind-blowing bass-line--an element of Zep that makes them untouchable. You nailed every hammer-on and slide and even the improvised outro I've always been facinated with. Fuckin' bravo.

  • shit's dank

  • Excellent!

  • Comment removed

  • where did u get the tabs my friend :D

  • 1:08 fingers looks like a smooth rambeling man, great job sounds neat

  • JPJ was a guitarist/keyboardist as well and it came across in his bass playing. He filled all of the holes Page left and it was what we can call classic.

He could never have played any other than a Fender to get the sounds he did and it was usually a P-bass.

  • dude, that sounds...fucking awesome, i love the chorus! so smooth!!

  • You are an inspiration! So smooth...gosh I'm jealous.

  • so fucking nasty! great tone, great playing!

  • I've been trying to learn all the small details in this bassline, and this is the first video I've seen that seems to have them all. Good job!

  • i've been playing bass for 35 years and i can't play zeppelin songs like that, John Paul Jones is awesome and so are you.............nice work

  • I really hate you. I respect you as a bassist, but I hate you because of the fact that you can play the song so perfectly, I don't even want to post my own cover of it because it will just be mediocre compared to yours.

  • are you using flatwounds? or is it just the pickups?

  • @TNTIV ha, ha, do I not get any credit for shear smooth style. No, seriously, I'm just using nickel roundwounds, and the pickups are stock. It helps to get your neck polished up for some smooth gliding. My frets are pretty worn, helping maintain smoother sliding (not that I wouldn't mind refretting the bass).

  • @BassManOnTheHill haha no no, you have a smooth sound, I just figured it was flatwounds

  • @BassManOnTheHill you are damn good, i wish i could play like that

  • @BassManOnTheHill do you have any tips for a beginner

  • @weponspec1682 Sure, I recommend playing until your fingers are tough as leather. At first you'll get blisters, but they eventually turn to calis. Also, learn music theory, you know , scales, modes, fingering methods. Try to use some practice time for pure improv as well. Good Luck, you'll bet back what you put into it. Be patiient. Like any instrument, the bass can take some time to gain a smooth style. Best Wishes

  • @BassManOnTheHill thanks

  • @BassManOnTheHill you DO have 'shear smooth style'!

  • Damn fabulous, or should I say "Molto bene!"

  • how can i fix the action so the strings arent 5 inches off the neck

  • @WeedVulva If your bass is like mine it has height adjustment screws on each string saddle. There are 2 screws per saddle. Simply turn them counter-cloackwise to lower the saddles. Make sure you don't lower the strings too far, or you'll get a lot of buzz on the frets. Keep lowering while tuing your strings as you go, so you'll know if you've gone too far. The screws usually take a jewelers' screwdriver (flathead), but yours may be different. Good luck

  • nice video edit at :18

  • Nice P man, what year is that, 78 or 79? and what did Fender consider the color, Walnut?

  • @BassManOnTheHill what year is your fender and wen u do covers how many times do u practice the song before u record them

  • May I ask what bass that is? I have a crappy OLP but ours look the same.

  • fantastic cover, i think every note is correct ,also how do you get that tone??

  • Nice job man.

  • There's absolutly no doubt that you nailed it. Amazing Job my friend.

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • I couldn't find the notes for this, but this video plus some tabs really helped me learn this song, thanks for posting this man. Just got a Fender Jazz, great bass!

  • That is incredibly cool to see you play that bass line. I've been trying to get that song down for over 30 years and have never mastered it the way you have. Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice!! and thanks! I'll learn it from you!

  • great! do you direct record? im going to start direct recording for better audio.

  • @BassManOnTheHill Hey. Your videos are AMAZING. You nail every song with perfect timing and tone. You get every variation perfect! I was just wondering if your using a bass backing track or just playing with the track. If you are using a backing track where did you get it?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @m4carbine85 Thanks a bunch. I just record my bass over the original song. I try to keep my bass more in front than the bass on the song. You can turn down the bass on your cover track and turn up your own bass to be in the forefront.

  • @BassManOnTheHill Thats whats great about bass! You can use the original tracks and turn down the bass. But with guitar, its completely different. Love your bass playing though!

  • @BassManOnTheHill

do you have tabs for this?

if you use tabs, where do you find your tabs?

  • Good job bro ... peace from france

  • BassManOnTheHill! Fantastic! You have great meter and rhythm! Jonesy would be proud. Great tone, too.

  • awesome bro, thanks!

  • Excellent vid, great sound and very, very smooth. Defo thumbs up!

  • Sounds smooth and clean bro. Keep on jammin

  • If anyone can help me, specifically BMOTH, where can I find soundtracks w/o the bass? Or do I have to create them? I'm just thinking about performing live so I just want to know, BTW nice smooth playing

  • great

  • In reply to flat wound strings: I only use flat wounds. They are such a deep dark, moody tone...I love 'em. On the other hand those round wound bright tin strings that you can't get a bass tone out of are at the bottom of my list.

  • i think theres one hater out there who cant play this song. hey, dont hate if you cant relate.

  • Amazing job sussing out all those runs. Led Zeppelin II has some of the best bass lines of all time. Thanks for showing us all how it's done.

  • @jdmbates I second that on Zep 2.. also this guys plays ramble on even better than, dare I say John Paul Jones. The good thing about watching this video is, I thought I was a pretty good player... till I watched "bass man"

  • great job man... do you use flatwound strings man? I'm thinking of putting some on my Jazz Bass..

  • @JazzBass420 No, I tried them once and I didn't like the tension. They can be very stiff. For smooth sliding, I just use a little polish, which helps deadin some ot the bright tone of my strings as well. I've heard from other bassists that a string called a half-round is a bit more practical, but I have yet to try them. Thanks, let us know what you think of the flat-wounds.

  • @BassManOnTheHill I use half-wounds. All I can say is that I won't be going back to round-wounds any time soon :)

  • @MrIpenguin12 Awesome! Glad to hear somebody has tried them and likes them. I may pick up a set next time I buy strings. I'm getting bored with the same old roundwounds anyway.

  • Wow man, nice bass! I've also seen you "The Lemon Song" cover, and, quite frankly, it was amazing! Oh and I LOVE the tone on your bass, you really have put some soul into it my friend, good work, yours well and truly,

    Karl :)

  • A pleasure to hear that bass line and nice tone too

  • Hey how did you record this? Directly into your computer? from amp...or..?

  • Sorry for spam, I cant stop watching your video :D

  • How much does that bass costs? You really deserve it dude, even a better one like john paul jones one, that manson one. Im really impressed dude, you deserve a good band to play on. Keep Calm and Ramble On

  • I cant do that with mi fender SQUIER shit, I wish I could have a Fender P Bass as good as yours, lucky but at the same time, you deserve it, you gifted guy keep on working you'll get known if you keep on working, good luck sir.

  • Very nice! That has to be one of the hardest JPJ bass lines & you nailed it!

  • You should do session work you are an incredible bass player.

  • wow if i can get half as good as that ill b buzzing lol, fantastic bass playing

  • Man your GOOD!

  • My biggest problem is my pinky on the E string; I always fumble those notes.

  • You nailed that fucker!

J.P.J. never got the recognition he deserved.

    Subscribed.

  • very nice!

  • fuck man its getting hard to compete

  • Nice job. The Badass bridge gives that P Bass more sustain IMHO. I really enjoy your transitions very clean. Do you do session work?

  • @bigtwnvin Thanks, and yes I agree. The badass II does add sustain and helps with more precision tuning and intonation. No, I haven't done any professional session work, yet.

  • @bigtwnvin zepp sounds shit with sustain imo. i even use sponge on worn flats.

  • awesome cover !! check mine out...i'm an 11 year old female bass player..great job!!

  • Great work. I actually did a search for "Ramble On" bass and yours was first in the search. I have to say, I was almost afraid to click because I hated to hear someone ruin it. So I was really impressed to hear someone play it so well.

  • this song was pretty hard but i learned. good cover btw!

  • wooow mann this is really tight, i just wanna ask, how to you get your tone? and what strings do you use? i really dig your sound =) thnx

  • DavidSinRocks>BassManOnTheHill

  • @FrizAtHome naa, dude, they're both awesome, at the same level. also, they play very different genres of music, so it's kind of impossible to compare them..

  • @FrizAtHome No...... This is the order (my order atleast) Knight Mayors, Marlowe, Davidsinricks and the bass man on the hill.

  • u kick ass . hell YA

  • Excellent, indeed.

  • Great playing! Love this song too!

  • Your like the only person not playing this off key

  • ya real ur good i just pickup a bass how hard is it to learn ? & how long u been playing . bad ass cover i play guitar is it hard to switch over or do both . i want to do both . keep on rock'n'.

  • Great job. Your right hand is doin' work.

  • awsome dude im a bass player too and i was having trouble learning this song sothanks

  • Awsome dude im a bass player too and i was having some trouble learning this song and ur video helped so thanks

  • Great stuff, shame we did not see some of yout improv on that great line in the chorus.

  • Very nice job! Thanks for the lesson.

  • the sound quality is awesome i can't get anything to sound this clear, Btw dude its really good, and i love the guitar its very nice lookin"

  • aweso0me'

  • Bro are you from NJ? because there's a band ZEP cover band called Black Dog i thought you might be the bassest for them because you mentiond your in a band. if not do you have any vids of your band posted? you guys must be very good with you on the 4 strings.

  • MAN! You are 1 hell of a bass player... I added you to my favorite you tube videos. I really enjoy you playing my favorite songs without a mistake. Let me ask you this, Do you keep a standard tunning while playing most of these songs or do you ever tune down?.... Keep the videos coming!.

  • Thanks, glad you like the vids. I just tune to the songs as they are on the recordings. The only significant alteration in tuning was for Hey Hey What Can I Do, which was tuned down 1 & 1/4 steps.

  • Uhh...sometimes I grow so tired.

  • This is possibly my favorite bass line ever. It's a close tie between this and five magics by megadeth.

  • Right on Bass Man!

  • You couldn't of played this more perfectly. 6 out of 5 stars! Great cover man.

  • Great cover man it seems so easy!!!

    Congrats!!!

  • This one and Lemon Song really define JPJ's style. Great cover!

  • @HamsterFueledRocket no no listen to what is and should never be, thats an awesome bass song by led zep

  • smooth, really nice!

  • That's some sweet action, man!

  • Very Very goooooood!!!!!

  • I just started to learn this song from a book and could not, for the life of me, figure out the right hand. Thank you so much for posting this. Beautiful job. Spot on. Best cover vid I've seen in a long while. Definitley the best of Ramble On, by far.

  • amazing!

  • My favorite bass performance by JPJ - and you nailed it! The fill in the chorus is the best bass lick of all time..

  • Sooo good! Perfect timing, flawless execution, and authentic feel. WIsh you lived in my town -- I'd love to jam.

  • Nice. Someone's done their homework.

  • i meant Paige, not Page sry

  • No, it is Page.

  • Hahas it's Page.

  • Led Zeppelin will always be the BEST band, listened to them since i was 4. And for whatever retard thinks Jimmy Page is the bassist for Zepp, HE IS THE GUITARIST, JP Jones is.. and btw jimmy page is no slob, all for of the band members are amazing.

    R.I.P John Bonham

  • pretty good !

  • Best true-to-original cover of this bass line I have ever heard. Damned nice job!

  • Damn that was nice.

That song never gets old and you nailed it.

  • leaves are falling all around...

  • great job man

  • Sorry , but jimmy page is not the bassplayer of Led Zeppelin. And anyway, I think led zepplin is great live. That's why live is not studio, it has mistakes, faults, but also new inspiration and contact with audience. Live-life...see the connection. I think, when you see led zeppelin live, your ears and eyes fall out of your head.

    Rutger

  • NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are one of the tightest bassists on YouTube... you do any originals?

  • thanks very much. I have made some original bass centered songs I plan on posting. The originals I play with my band haven't been made into videos, just audio. Hopefully within a few weeks.

  • Flawless. Nice outro.

  • Out standing man! You have mastered one of the best bass lines in rock n roll history!

  • 4:00 amazing

  • Cool, this is alot closer to the warm-fat-clean tone that JPJ used to get back in the 70's.

JPJ used to play with his thumb resting on the neck at the body cutaway, (like Glenn Cornick).

  • Incredible!!

Where can I find this version in sheet form or tab form??

Any Led Zeppelins sheet books or tabs to buy, download...

  • Look for "Led Zeppelin I & II" which has both their first two albums in tabulature and notation, plus vocals. I found it in a sheet music store, but can be ordered at just about any music store.

  • Incredible!!!

Where can i find the sheet or the tabs fot this?

  • The best music I've seen for Zep Bass is from Alfred Classic Album Editions. Keep in mind the tab is not perfect. A good ear is still required. Thanks.

  • the thing about led zep is everyone says how amazing a guitarisit jimmy pages is, and no one even knows who john paul jones is.

JPJ is led zeppelin, forget those fags robert plant and jimmy page who have spoiled everything with their middle eastern drum machine shit

  • dude fuck you! jimmy page is god

  • Jimmy Page is God? "STOP PUTTING GOD DOWN LIKE THAT" God isn't sloppy. but Jimmy Page is. thats if you know anything about guitar. BUT! what i will say is Jimmy Page has incredible feeling and you just cant learn that. Lots of respect to Jimmy but he over dubbed to much in the studio thats why Zep soundS horrable live

  • Uh, God, (assuming there is one, which I doubt), would be an infinite Being, and therefore, incapable of being put down.

  • ok first jimmy page isn't a complete slob. he is all over but its solid. he is better than most guitarists i know. plus i saw there last concert and it was one on the best sounding in the world

  • First of all my name is not DUDE! second, I never read anything in the bible about GOD being a sloppy guitar player and overdubed most of his studio recordings . so when ZEP plays live they sound HORRABLE. your 0 for 2 next pitch your out!

  • I've yet to find a good bass cover of this song, untill I listened to this one, great great cover dude, the tone was awesome, it was very clean, FIVE STARS!!!

  • I agree... the best cover. very nice. clean and right on.

  • I have heard many versions of this on You Tube and this is BY FAR the very best...note for note! WELL DONE!!

  • That was incredible! Thanks for posting this. I especially like the flourishes on the coda...fantastic!
