As I've said in earlier posts, fish only have "pain" receptors in their face and MAYBE their mouth. Scientists believe that while they do have have said nerves, they don't have the ability to understand pain. Which is why, instead of going towards where a hook wants them to go, they fight against it.

There's been studies about whether fish feel pain or not. From what they said, they only have "pain" receptors in the face and maybe mouth. Otherwise, they feel no pain.

Not because of the giant numbers, but because of the confined space they are kept in. For example, pigs spending their entire life used to breed more pigs (for delicious bacon) in an enclosure in which they can either stand or lay down, no room for walking or even turning around. The fish can still eat, breathe, and swim around. The only thing it's missing is a couple chunks of flesh from it's sides. That's all. As I've said in earlier posts, fish only have "pain" receptors in their face and MAYBE their mouth. Scientists believe that while they do have have said nerves, they don't have the ability to understand pain. Which is why, instead of going towards where a hook wants them to go, they fight against it.

@GuyverU01 Bullshit, you've obviously never bred or handled fish before. I have. Fish have a coat of mucus all over their body that basically serves as a major part of their immune system. If you touch their sides or they rub against something, that slime coat gets rubbed off and they can get sick and die much more easily. That is why they have to be able to feel things that touch their sides and they don't like it so they try to get away. This shit is NOT okay.

There's been studies about whether fish feel pain or not. From what they said, they only have "pain" receptors in the face and maybe mouth. Otherwise, they feel no pain.

@jichichi Again. The fish didn't feel it, it's in a contained environment, the only one in the tank, and I believe that it would actually grow that flesh back. Not sure about that last part. Yes, they survive after having a chunk bitten out of them in the wild, but how is that an excuse to be deliberatelly cruel to a fish in a restaurant? I eat animals, and I acknowledge that they suffer to an extent when slaughtered, but why be excessively cruel? Kill it and do so as quickly and humanely as you can, THEN eat it. Not the other way around.

@hzuiel All studies I've read indicate that the nervous system of most fish IS evolved enough to experience pain. I understand that pain is a mechanism to alert the animal that something is wrong, pain is necessary. But I think it is wrong to knowingly cause pain to an animal that CAN feel it (which I believe fish can). I work with live fish full time, and have for years. In my experience, they suffer anxiety, stress and pain like any animal. Some fish species more than others, admittedly.

I know fresh is best, so keep the fish alive in a tank at the restaurant and kill it just before you serve it. My POINT was simply this: don't eat an animal that's alive & don't hack chunks off a living animal. Kill it, then serve it. I'm sure the restaurant has enough customers to use up the whole fish within the hour.

Not because of the giant numbers, but because of the confined space they are kept in. For example, pigs spending their entire life used to breed more pigs (for delicious bacon) in an enclosure in which they can either stand or lay down, no room for walking or even turning around. But that's another debate entirely haha :)
