  • Holy shit this works! I just tried it for less ten 1 minute and I can do it! Thanks for the tip!

  • I'm new to shooting, I'm right handed & left eye dominate. Is it easier to learn to shot left handed or adjust stance to aim with left eye while using my right hand? Thanks for any help.

  • Right on!

Using both eyes with a scope helps to keep the reticle in focus. When watching and waiting for the right time to fire, you are better able to stay on target.

  • I know red dot optics were designed to shoot both eyes open but are you supposed to shoot higher powered scopes with both as well. I always thought if there was zoom you should close one eye. How do you guys shoot if there is magnification?

  • Thanks sootch, i've been wondering how people do this for a while now.

  • Who doesn't shoot with both eyes open?

  • just realized you sort of look like chevy chase

  • my son and loved the tips. will try next time I go to the range.

  • @sootch00

i tried your technique (wich i used before to see depth better)

and it really improves my shots!

    but i was wondering..

if my eyes watch at the target, i can't see the sight straight.

how to you work with that?

  • 2:10 pff

    2:12 pff

  • I am right handed and i realize that i view through my left eye. are there any problems with this?

  • I'm a new shooter and this was my biggest question. I was starting to think I needed glasses. Now I see it as being a lot like the way I trained my ears to listen to 2 different sources at a time when I used to DeeJay

    Thanks

  • Both eyes open also gives you faster target acquisition as well. This, for me, was the largest perk of learning to shoot with both my eyes. Great video as always sootch!

  • Ok I shoot professionally. Yes while your going to multiple targets very fast you start with both eyes open but when you start to pull the trigger you shut the eye your not using then after you fire you re open it ESPECIALLY with scopes. You open both eyes to find the target in the scope then shut the eye steady (breathing discipline) then squeeze, the you re-open the eye.

  • binden aiming concept. i'll have to try it out sometime.

  • 0:33, way to point the gun toward everyone lol

  • @702prodigy OK have you ever heard of a tripod it's the thing the cams sits on no human can hold a cam that still Jesus !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @goffy44

it was a joke. calm down !

  • Never thought of this... Started practicing with my .22 and when i started to see the sights clearly with both eyes open I almost freaked out lol. Thanks for the tips!

  • i could never shoot until i open two eyes. even with the target rite in my face about 8 feet i would stil miss with 1 eye

  • what about long distance shooting?... even in the military they teach to supress vision in one eye for more accurate results

  • i shooting a lot more than before and im trying to work off some bad habits. thnks for the video

  • this is EXACTLY what i needed to take my shooting to the next level. Thank you!

  • whenever i shoot my bb gun my eye is open but when i pull the trigger my eyes close

  • I'll try this, It never worked for me, but needs must.

  • i have to shoot with both eyes open...i find it very hard to close my non dominant eye so i learned to shoot with both eyes open...makes it easy for shooting at multiple targets down range

  • WHAT IF YOUR LESS DOMINANT EYE IS BAD??? LIKE MINE... MY LEFT EYE DONT SEE VERY WELL... SO NOT ONLY WHEN I SHOOT BUT IN DAILY TASK I SOMETIMES CLOSE IT..

  • @sootch00 are you a competitive shooter? in like competitions? or just for fun?

  • @Sherpaful you use your dominant eye and learn to shoot with that. if u are left eye dominant shoot left. Right eye dominant shoot right handed. it might be awkward at first but u will get used to it with practice. i had the same problem

  • Good point well made! Thnx for vid!

  • Thanks Sootch00 for a great channel, it is so informative!!! Am learning a lot from you and Hickok45. Don't know if you know him from youtube? Thank you so much!

  • What if you're cross dominant?

  • How can I correct it if when I aim and see two guns, and two hands, I dont really know wich eye is dominate.

  • @isamtator Me too! WTF?

  • @isamtator It's not as hard as it sounds. Put thde index finger in front of you, seee it with one eye closed as if you were shooting. see where it is and now ope the other eye and remember to focus with the eye you had been keeping open. Your brain will start knowing which eye to fallow, while still keeping both eyes open. Hope this helps.

  • @llello1972 Yeah, I have been able to hit the tergets a lot better, and when I was shooting the otherday, I heard it before I saw it but there was a deer running to the left of me.

  • How many guns do you own?

  • Hey im mainly a pistol shooter but im right handed and left eye dominant, so would you reccomend shooting both eyes open still?

  • DAMN IT! I was born as a left handed, but when I was younger I hated that, so I changed to a righty by never using my left hand. Now I am a righty, but my LEFT eye is dominate... So when I shoot, I have to use my left hand to hold it. Wonderrful.

  • I close my left eye at first to acquire a sight picture, and then i open my left eye to maintain peripheral vision and then fire

  • i can't close my non dominant eye. I can only close my dominant. I cant even squint my non dominant. Glorious

  • sucks i was born blind in one eye

  • when i shoot a gun i keep both eyes open until i take the shot and then when im done with the shot i open the other eye again

  • Really good video, but unfortunately I'm cross dominate (right handed left eye dominate).

  • wow just wow, i tried this and after about 10 mins of doing the exercise i can see 1 clear image with just a lil ghosting from my left eye but i can acquire a target fast and separate the images. i practiced looking at the nail on my finger up to a light switch then moved to my millennium pt145, gonna try on my ak with irons then a red dot. cant wait to hit the range and see my results

  • I'm right handed, but left eye dominant....

  • is that a rear peep sight near the back of that scope on ur ar??

  • I always shot with both eyes open.

    Scopes, handguns, shotuguns.

    Thought that i was wierd.

  • That wouldnt happen to be a M4-Carbine. Am i correct?

  • @driftmaniac765 AR-15. M4's are military only, M4-gery's look like M4's but are semi-auto only.

  • @duke3oh8 I see. Thank you!

  • there are many automatic ar-15's on the market. The m4 uses very specific parts (colt stuff) you can have an automatic ar-15 that looks identical exept for brand names (I know bush master make an automatic ar-15)

  • @EvilLamas You can buy any brand AR-15 and if its semi-auto only it will say AR-15 (or some variation, CAR-15, RR-15) BUT if you were to buy a full auto it will not say AR-15, it will say M4 because it is a military design, hence why you need a Class 3 ATF licence or be military or LEO.

  • @duke3oh8 or it can be an original m16

  • I have recently impressed a friend of mine by showing him that I can wink with either eye, he said its very good for shooting because I can aim using either eye. However looking at the advantages you gave, it makes perfect sense to shoot with both eyes open. There is just one problem, how do I know which of my eyes is dominant? I am right handed, if that matters, if not how do I find out which eye is dominant?

  • ya, im not having such a problem with getting rid of the double vision of my sights. My problem is seeing a ghost of my target

  • Comment removed

  • i like to aim with the both eyes

  • @lucabadue of corse its more comfirtable

  • Sir, that was helpful but can you do one for Iron Sights thank you

  • no way, youve never shot a gun before! lol

  • are you right handed and left eye dominant?

  • Hey Sootch, so I'm assuming if I'm seeing double images of my weapon, I"m doing it wrong?

  • Thank you for this informative video.

However... it is depth of field... not field of depth :)

  • Another helpful tip I got from my instructor, because in Canada we have to take a mandatory firearms safety course and exam, is to tip the beak of your hat down enough to slightly obstruct the view of the target in your non dominate eye. This will help your master eye to take over, or if wearing safety glasses a little bit of black tape

  • One thing I've noticed is if you are seeing double your right eye is the sight of the image on the left. And your left eye is the image on the right. So if your master eye is your right and your seeing a double image of the sight line the left image up with the target. I'm just starting out but thats my input

  • @SilverWPhoenix I have the same problem, is this normal?

  • Outstanding points :)

  • @Zenmagine i have no clue. ive just got my firearm licence in canada. but thats just what ive figured out for myself

  • this is jus not right, bad advice., this method is promiary for 1x unmagnified sights., and why are you using a riser with your acog, i can see from here your not getting proper cheek weld and its null n voiding your BDC., former us army sgt and range cadre on many occasions.., and we would have never taught this method..,but great lesson on shooting with an aimpoint or eotech.,thats it

  • there are times/optics that you shoot with both eyes open, an ar15 with iron sights is not supposed to be shot using this method., hence why the military doesnt teach that way., when using iron sights, shoot with one eye soootch

  • yeah same here im right handed but my dominant eye is in the left

  • What if I am right hand dominant but left eye dominant

  • im practicing looking down my finger like a barrel but the target always doubles?

  • @IIZODIIAC I am experiencing the same problem, i hope someone can help both of us.

  • so im blind in my right eye...any tips?

  • i tried shooting both eyes open with my bolt action 22 long rifle ruger i almost hit every target so do you have any tips

  • Actually, unless I use a scope, I ignore the sites; I just go down the barrel. I've had my best shots that way. It's less stressful on the brain work, and much more natural. See the shot, and the body follows. Give it a try; it even works in low to extreme low light..

  • perhaps i missed it ,but u still close one eye if ur lookin thru a scope right?

  • @magnetmixer yes..., but according to him no., bad advice

  • What kind of flat top rail mount do you have on your AR upper?

  • Really helped me with my shooting man!

  • Update: After trying to train my eyes since my last post (3 weeks ago) I can now see a proper sight picture with both eyes open. THANKS SOOTCH!

  • The music is too distracting. It makes me think about sexy dark skinned men, like blacks or arabs. I have problems.

  • but if you see one gun sight wont you see 2 targets?

  • I tried doing this while the video was playing but it makes me feel sick because of all the blurred images.

  • lol when you squint your eye @ 2:09 it looks exactly like the face my girlfriend makes when she looks at herself in the mirror before we go out ... no disrespect just thought that was *really* funny

  • My brother does that without even thinking about it. I thought it was werid at first, but this make sence.

  • well I KNOW MORE TYPS THEN YOU(:

  • i cant do it with a ak 47

  • are you in a war at all time?

  • This is how my basic pistol shooting instructor taught me.

  • Thanks for the great advice and little exercise! I'm definitely putting this into practice.

  • I cant close just my left eye, so i trained to aim with both eyes open, and its really possible to aim that way. Its just about training...

  • THATS DUMB

  • @jack55007 and wtf do u even know about guns?

  • when I saw this video last year, I've been training this technique. this video has changed my way of shooting, thanks sootch!

  • Where did u buy the silencer that just makes "boom"? :)

  • ok i am wierd. i my right hand is dominant but my left eye is dominant at the same time.

  • What is the proper way to shoot a rifle if you are cross-eye dominant?

  • @Sherpaful Check out jafount's video response to this video above. He addresses the cross dominance issue. Thanks ~

  • @sootch00 Everything you say makes sense on BOE shooting. I've done a little experimentation with 2-eyes shooting myself and wondered about its efficacy. I'm lefthanded and what you say is right, my left eye is the dominant one. I think all shooters should at least give BOE shooting a try. If it doesn't work for you, you can always go back to squinting. :- ) Thanks for the video.

  • Meh. Guns suck, Zanpakutou's are awesome

  • @sootch00 Whats with the music?

  • boom, boom, boom. lol.. jk... good video!

  • A buddy of mine recently pointed this technique out to me, he's an NRA instructor and really knows his stuff. This technique gets easier with practice and I think it has improved my accuracy. I especially like that I really keep a broader field of view instead of getting tunnel vision. I've started shooting my bow with both eyes open as well and it's working great. I'm looking forward to putting this into practice this hunting season. I'm liking your videos by the way. Thanks.

  • sootch00 IM A HUNTER AND I HAVE A SHOTGUN.I KNOW THAT WITH BOTH EYES OPEN YOU SHOOT BETTER THAN WITH ONE EYE CLOSED BUT I CANT DO IT BECAUSE I SEE TWO BARRELS OR TWO BIRDS!!!!WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP THAT PHENOMENON OR WHAT SHOULD I DO TO SHOOT PROPERLY PLEASE HELP ME THANKS!!!!

  • I'm going to try the squint technique. Currently when I bring the sights up I see two weapons lol. I guess I just have to put in the time. Initially I thought I was the only one with this issue.

  • I've struggled with the concept of shooting both eyes open for a while. I'm right hand/left eye dominant so if I don't close my left eye I get a strong double image or start just looking at the side of the pistol haha. I'll try that squint and start training to shoot both eyes open. Looks to be a good tip.

BTW, I'm a new subscriber, and was referenced here from TNP. I'm really enjoying your channel and videos. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • my dad always teases me for shooting with both eyes open, it's especially useful while hunting since i can see my target, and anything that might interfere with the shot, and allows me to see whats behind the shot so i can shoot safely! great info!

  • Good points Mr.sootch00 never handicap yourself in a situation. Giving yourself tunnel vision is settin yourself up to fail. A gun is just a tool for the job.

  • thats hard for me

  • this helped me a lot! I lik the squinting to help train the dominant eye.

  • but when I try this technique, my target becomes blurry is that a problem?

  • thats an STi in the background at 30 seconds lol

  • Great stuff Sootch, i unwittingly started doing the same thing with photography a while back. It really does make a difference when trying to capture the shot i want, as well as reducing facial fatigue. It also gives me a clearer objective in the viewfinder as i'm not seeing darkness in my other eye.

I shall definitely make good use of the lessons here to improve my 'shooting'.

Thanks for the great vids man.

    Keep it real, jd. =]

  • Im dont acctually own a gun but i play Airsoft... And after watching this video i went to try out if this truly works... And i was happy to notice that it is better to aim with both eyes open ... i could see more to my left and prevent myself from being hit lol.

  • thats not hard! i snip with both eyes open! and i alway hit my targets

  • @bazengao Ur right because you can see better with both eyes.

  • no wonder it takes so long for U.S soldier to train

  • a easy way for pistol sights is to put the gun towards the domaint side and focus on the rear sight the switch to the front and the try to line up the clearer rearsight of the you should see

or line up the gun with the domaint eye and try not to flinch and it should come into focus

with scopes just focus on the target and slowslower open your other eye

  • I'VE SHOT WITH BOTH EYES OPEN SINCE I FIRST STARTED, MY FATHER SAID IT WASNT PROPPER, UNTILL I OUT SHOT HIM, ME 10/10 STEEL PLATES 15 YARDS SIG 229 .22lr, HIM 8/10, BEST OUT OF 3, ME 9/10 HIM 7/10. Oh, now he shoots with both eyes open, and were pretty much even at 15 yards, 25, he knocks my ass, oh, he uses a cz27, he can curve bullets with that thing, he had it since he was 12, i got it when i was 16, and he bought another one anyways, :), thanks for clearing this topic up. toldyasodad!!! ;)

  • @shockeyshock hahaha curve bullets ahahahaha

  • this guy really knows his shit

  • very good videos

    friend

    help me

I want to look on youtube to show an image so long as yours that says

shootch00 but not the acer is so I had to put a character how do you make these pictures?

  • great helpfull video but you should mention how you figure it out... hold your thumb up at arms length holding both open, then take turns closing both eyes until you notice your thumb appears to stay in the same place while one eye is open, which ever one is open is the one that is more dominant

  • awesome video. very knowledgeable and answered all my questions!

  • I just wanted to say "thanks", for some great info and to let you know that I'm now shooting both eyes open and could never go back to the old caveman way of shooting that our fathers taught us... Thanks again Sootch!

  • Thanks sootch00!!! I wish I'd learned that in the Army.

  • FFFFFUUUUU**, i just realised for sure that i'm cross eye dominant :'(

I did this one test which was in a wikipedia article

  • very instructional video about shooting, this is taught in boot camp in probably most militaries worldwide, was taught to me as well. I vaguely recall that also if you keep your head straight while aiming down the iron sights for example, then the light thats coming to your eyes wont get distorted as it goes to your retina and produces the image, OR some kind of complicate shit like that... :D

I don't master this technique, I tend to squint my left eye just a little bit :/

  • OFCOURSE MY FRIEND YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO FIRE A GUN BECAUSE IS ABSOLUTLY NECESSARY !!!

HAAHAHHAHAAHHAAHA American is the shit country in the world ! I hope Iran destroy you

  • great video. I think I have seen military guys do the both eyes open thing.

  • what if you're left eye dominant & right handed

  • @TheFlex21 I have that problem. I asked Sootch about it, and he refered me to jafount's video responce to this video. The main solution was, to shoot offhand. Since I MUST use my right hand in shooting....I am still looking for a solution. I will try to remember to send you a message if I ever find a solution.

  • @TheFlex21 you would have to be trained the other way, i had to do it

  • Both eyes for 50yds and inward folks.

  • yea u have to see everything around u because them paper targets might tryn flank you

  • to say that proper shooting is only possible with both eyes open is complete bullshit. It depends on the distance of the target....clearly if thres a 3 ft distance threat im not gonna line up with one eye but if the target is moving towards around say 15 feet you need to focus....your full of shit man..

  • I hate the raghead music...

  • nice ar15

  • i actually tried shooting with both eyes open before, thought i was the only mofo dumb enuff to try until i saw this vid and Sootch's rationale behind it all and sure makes sense. I shoot rifles with iron sights for hours at a time and closing one eye really strain the face and the open eyes will feel the strain and lose focus even at 100yds.

  • I have a new technique,both eyes shut

  • Have you tried the new BAC style Trijicon optics? They work great for using both eyes open and still being able to make 300 yard+ shots. If you ever get a new scope or decided to replace the current one and put it on your secondary, check out the RCO M4 model. It's very nice indeed.

  • cool advice - we even did not practice that in army. thanks a lot!!

  • great video, I keep both eyes open it is easier for me, I am right hand dom. but am left eye dom. works good for pistol too shoot right handed, my rifle shooting I shoot off handed with both eyes open.

  • I like what you are saying, but how do I go about training for this if I am cross dominant? (right handed, left eyed dominant)

  • Good advice. Definitely seems to help me.

  • well its good for my asian ass that my nose is flat so i dont have that problem wth it blocking my peripheral vision haha

  • Brings back memories! Great Vid, Point to Note, Keeping both eyes open also helps you observe the fall of shot! Vital if you happen to use a weapon that isn't zeroed!

  • Great video. I first learnt this skill when I was about 12 and reading about field target shooting with an air rifle, where pellet drop between 30 and 40 yards can be an inch or more, so depth perception is super important. Then just a couple years ago I was laughed at by a gun store owner for saying I always use both eyes with any weapon in any discipline. Then I was ignored by someone who was military police! I was trying to teach them trap shooting at the time. Started to think I was crazy.

  • thanks for the vid man, think you've just converted me and i'll have fun practicing this technique. the jihad track is awesome too feel free to send it to me.

  • This was really new to me.

  • What video software do U use?

  • @astrialkil Windows movie maker. I really like it.

  • Is it natural to still see 'two' weapons when practicing?

  • @CrystalHunter1989 You use your dominate eye to focus on the sight. It takes practice and concentration but you will be able to see one sight. After a while it will become natural. Thanks~

  • do snipers keep both eyes opened?

  • If they are trained correctly. Snipers are the most phyiscally challenged and it would be vital to their mission. Thanks~

  • @sootch00 where did you learn to shoot are you an ex-military or something? i live in canada so its kinda hard to get an AR-15 type weapon but im getting a remington model 700 for the sake of training my shooting even tho im not a military and or a policer i just like the habit

  • @sootch00 I highly disagree with that. I was never trained in any way EVER in any precision rifle class or have ever been instructed to shoot with both eyes open while shooting a precision rifle. That is completely wrong. Im am not a sniper but I was witnessed many former and active snipers shooting with their weak eye closed and dominant open. Maybe if your shooting weak side you could use your weak eye but in any other situation I would and anyone else I know would use their dominant eye.

  • @sootch00 When i try both eyes, i end up seeing two of the same target. Is that normal?

I can hit it, but i have to aim at the one to the right. I feel way more comfortable with just one eye.

  • @LedKenji666 Asking my father, a Special Forces Sniper, he only opened one eye.

  • @LedKenji666 It depends... In finland they say that when u shoot with any gun both eyes open.

  • This guy is just AWESOME..!!!

  • sorry for blowing the comments up sootch, but may I add when I shoot through a scope I use my right eye to aim unless its a parallax free.

  • yup tis fun Im left eye dom but shoot right handed its tons o fun but I think its a good thing cause it I have to switch to my off hand to shoot it will be more easier to use the sights. great vid

  • my pistol

  • to make that transition quicker blink the weak eye two or three times it will instantly allow you to keep both eyes open, two its like muscle memory the more you do it the more easier it is to do. I shoot like this when shooting.

  • Thanks for the tip~ Good stuff
