  • Amy Whinehouse ruined this song

  • great song

  • I was in the 8th grade listening to this on a Chicago station every night. The only station I could get on the radio and wow was it a great station. Played all the great songs like this one. Love it............

  • @midnightems1201

that may have been WIND in Chicago.. Rod Strom was the DeeJay

  • @maggie60559 Thanks. I don't remember the station now but you could be right. Wish I could go back and listen again. :)

  • Como eu queria ter vivido essa época. Andando de Bel-Air e ouvindo isso alto. Classic 4ever, from: Brazil.

  • Awwww......so sweet! I was born when this song made it to number one!

  • why is this song so great when i listen to it at 11 in "58.....at 21 in '68....at 31 in '78

at 41 in '88 at 51 in '98 at 61' in '08 and most likely will be great when i listen to it at 71 in '18..and hopefully at 81 in '28...and if i can still hear at '91 in '38...and perhaps on my death bed at 101 in '48...would you say that i love this song all my life...and beyond....

  • Sandy got $15.00 of the $75.00 while the creep Specter was eating steak

  • Wonderfully Cheesy

  • Teddy Bears consisted of: Phil Spector, Marshall Leib, Harvey Goldstein (who left the group early on), lead singer Annette Kleinbard, last minute recruit, drummer Sandy Nelson Spector played all of the instruments for the recording, but couldn't get the drums right. He recruited Sandy Nelson (before he called himself Sandy Nelson) to play the drums. They recorded the song at Gold Star Studios at a cost of $75. By the time Spector was out of his teens, he was already a millionair.

  • thank you for posting this....what fond and endearing memories!

  • which person is phil spector?

  • Annette Kleibard was the singer-------she could sing really lovely

  • I was sixteen in '58 and this with others of that era were what we grew up with, thanks youtube.

  • @1busybeekeeper i was in the 8th grade then dancing with my girl friend to this song and now she is my wife of 47 yrs.

  • i was 21 back in 1958 this song used to play over the radio at night i loved it

  • Im 15....oh if only people my age treasured this music as ido3

  • @serranonative49 This is a treasure too!! One of many classics from 50's and 60's. In my opinion, THE best decades.

  • Comment removed

  • @serranonative49 Check out The Poni Tails 'Born too Late' and Skeeter Davis 'End of The World'.

    Both in the same vein.

  • Look at Phil Spector ,y god he has changed.

  • Boy,she sure can sing! Wow!

  • It was the number one song the day I was born 12/23/58

  • Darauf ging früher die große Schmuse ab.

  • I swear that's Phil Lesh on the right, not Phil Spector. You people have it all mixed up!

  • @wildemouse you´re right there. people are so weird these days, man.

  • Phil Spector now is an immensely sad part of the sixties.Ive loved this song for years,so many thanks to pheldon for posting

  • I love this song, and how you can almost instantly hear a Phil Spector song. So many have tried to imitate, even steal from him, but nobody can come close. Such talent, and such a waste.

  • Wait a minute... this isn't Teddybears STHLM!

  • Phil Spector wrote this song, as a dedication to his father...

  • That;s not Phil Spector, that's Phil Lesh!

  • @wildemouse sorry you're wrong. phil spectre wrote this song and wanted to record it. there were more people in this group but i don't know who. i believe sandy nelson was a last minute addition at recording time. the guitar player is defininately phil spector

  • How can you NOT like MUSIC like this. that is superb.

  • Always loved this song but never knew Phil Spector was in Teddy Bears.Lovely voice, lovely lady,

  • I've been a Phil Spector fan for nearly 30 years and have never seen a filmed performance of the Teddy Bears. The simplicity, honesty and sheer beauty of this song is what great pop music is all about. Also my mom grew up in the fifties and fondly remembers this song

  • Why did the producers of the video think it was necessary to give the song a big band ending? Sounds stupid.

  • Seriously, what did Ronnie ever see in Phil Spector??? I do love this song and his talent though!

  • Who's Phil specter?

  • The title was the inscription his mother had etched into his (Spector's) father's grave.

  • so you see, parental violence carries over to the children. he is a genius and that is only a hair away from insanity. but i love his music and if you flip this song over,

you can see he was years ahead of himself with music. DONT YOU WORRY MY LITTLE PET was unexplanable at the time.

  • THIS IS THE FINAL TIME PEOPLE!!!!!!

The shrimpy little guy on the right side of the video playing the guitar is PHIL SPECTOR!

Stop asking if that it Phil Spector! Yes, Yes, Yes, it's Phil Spector. If you must ask again just repeat to yourself 100 times - that is Phil Spector. It's not too much to ask is it? If anybody else asks if that is Phil Spector I swear I'm gonna throw my damn computer against the wall.

  • @net144 is that phil spector on the right?

  • The title to know him is to love him comes from the inscription on the grave of phil spector's father, who committed suicide when spector was nine years old. Phils mother, Bertha, used to scream 'Your father killed himself because you were a bad child' as she chased him round the kitchen with a carving knife" lol

  • Spitting image of Phil Spector on the right.

  • Screw these commercials

  • Yes, a young Phil Spector ,with a freaky haircut,on the left. The composer was suppiosed to have got the title from words carved on a gravestone!

Hell, that man (Spector) was associated with some great songs!! Great pity he's now a guest of the US Government!!

  • @Propylnitrite ...Spector got the title from the words on his father's gravestone. His father committed suicide when Spector was a very young boy. His parents were first cousins and during an interview in the late 60's he expressed concern that such a close marriage may have passed problems on to him.

  • Is that Phil Spector on the right ?

  • I didn't know Pee-Wee Herman could play guitar.

  • That guy on the right playing the guitar, he reminds me of Phil Spector.

  • This song topped out in December,1958, and being a March '58 baby, I know I'll be 56 in 3 yrs. Do your subtraction :)

  • That's Phil Spector playing the guitar...

  • I realize Phil Spector is no saint. This song however is quite lovely. Amy Winehouse did a remake of this song, and it is terrible. Phil Spector and I will most likely never meet, and I suppose that is ultimately for the best.

  • Lol it only says "starring Phil Spector"

anyways this song <3 x) ahaha

  • I could be wrong here, its just a guess, but could the guy playing the guitar possibly be Phil Spector ?

  • Yes, today he is a monster, back then he was just an asshole, i've been told

  • nice song, but Amy Winehouse's performance is supeiour imho... but we live in different times now...

  • @eddieeish ... I had the same experience with a boy who sat in front of me in 4th grade -- 1959, John. B. Allen Elementary in Seattle -- Paul Erickson. Paul - if you're out there, I never forgot you, my first boy crush! Dianne (missdeal07 on youTube)

  • wish i could walk along side of him.........

  • wat where r da electronic beatz

  • He was a weasel then. He cheated the others out of their money. Neither made a dime from this mega-hit. He did the same thing to the Paris Sisters and many other groups. He was always a sociopath.

  • wrote for phil spectors dad, the words were on his grave stone, his father commited suicide when spector was 11 or 12

  • is everyone aware that this song is about phils dad who committed suicide? its a incredibly beautiful song even considering the content and the pain involved.

  • Annette, the girl here, became Elvis' lover for several years, and later wrote "Gonna Fly Now", the theme for "Rocky".

  • This is to all that knows me and my love gerald. To know him is to love him and i do.....

  • great song and has Sandy Nelson on drums!!!!

  • "Teddy Bear's video promo starring Phil Spector."

I didn't see Spector anywhere in the video.

I hate the big band sound at the end. It really destroys the mood.

  • @themoshmenace You didn't recognize him. Look at the guy on the right!

    Regards,

    Wiltent

  • @wiltent Are you sure?! I knew he wrote the song, but I never knew he also sang it as one of the Teddy Bears.

  • @themoshmenace My understanding is that he formed the 'Teddy Bear's' while still at, or just recently graduated from Fairfax High School and did perform on some recordings during that time. Also, the guy on the right sure does look like a very young Phil Spector.

    Regards,

    Wiltent

  • @wiltent It is Phil Spector. You are correct

  • I first heard this song when I had the most massive crush on a boy at swimming, that was 50+ years ago. Whe dated for about 18 months and then moved on. We have just made contact again. Also just won a competition on the year this song was released, how amazing.

  • HI, WHAT A GREAT TUNE. YOUNG LOVE AT IT'S MOST INNOCENT! THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES,TOM D. BRICK,NJ. {AT THE SHORE}.

  • Wow, it's kind of weird to see Phil Spector looking and acting so normal.

  • @dahsuerk....I'm an old man and loved this since I was not an old man .

...I thought "The wall of Sound" came later .

...Please "Come Back" .....(That's old C.B.talk ) and set me right .

  • @cuteoldguy yes,the wall of sound came a little bit later... at least a couple of years later

  • My name is Mary, but not Mary Ann Millar, I loved this song, I had so many boyfriends in the 60;s and can remember dancing to this GREAT

  • The Wall of Sound.

  • Would have loved if Elvis sung this song.

  • The Beatles and Dolly Parton's Trio versions are the best by far.

  • Should also add that Phil Spector's dad committed suicide and guess that had a bad effect on him for the rest of his life.

  • This song is indeed 50 years old (in 2006). Actually now it is 56 years old. I was 12 when I listened to this song in sixth grade. This song went along with my crush on Mary Ann Millar who sat behind me and to the left in the back row. Mary if you get on YouTube, I'm still here. I never did have the nerve to say anything to you then. I was thinking you too pretty for me...how sadly funny this is now.

  • @Eddieeish find Mary Ann...google her, ask old classmates...have the nerve to find her out now...you never know......good luck.

  • @Eddieeish Hey snap,i was exactly the same age with the same sort of memory,i was in Blackburn Lancashire England UK,i was deeply in love with a girl called Muriel Monk i would follow her to school make sure i caught the same bus,i was absoloutly besotted with her and you know i doubt she even noticed me lol ,tunes are great memory jerkers they are,i am now married with a great wife of 40years,but a memory is revived tonight, great song.,,Thank you..pheldon

  • @Eddieeish Wow,parralell lives i would say here,,lol i am same age as you and when i was 12 i was besotted with a girl called Muriel Monk,i lived in Blackburn Lancashire England,i would sit beind her in class i would be sure to catch the same bus to school as her and the same bus home, amd ya know i dont think she even noticed me..lol,tunes are great memory jerkers and this one for sure along with your comment jerked mine, great song, thank you pheldon for posting it,,

  • @friding999 What a small world this is. To think that when you are having a soulful experience, someone, somewhere is having a similar experience! I am awed by knowing you could identify with this. Mary Ann drove me to delirium and kept me awake nights...at the tender age of 12 :)

  • @Eddieeish I feel your pain sir,,lol,i really do feel your pain lol,,teenage crushes are unbelievable when we look back, like you i couldnt sleep very well either,i delivered papers to her house and at times she wold be sat in her front room just reading i would take my papers then just go back and stare at her, frozen to death some nights,it would be classed as stalking now lol,i looking back it was better then ,we were in truth all innocents most of us were honourable and truthfull ,nice meeting

  • @Eddieeish: how sweet! Yes, I am sure we all have similar memories when listening to some of that 50s and early 60s stuff.

  • @Eddieeish

    ...You need to find her!

  • @Eddieeish

this song came out in 1958... not 56

  • Holy jacking jack jesus. This is right on 50 years old! How old am I?

  • molly ann rice. i use to watch you sing that song 50 years ago in school. it's been 50 years since i saw you. i have spent the last 50 years trying to find you and now i have. it seen only yesterday when you sang that song.

  • @hacksaw8214 Put your pants on.

  • @3rdPR THAT IS IT? THAT IS ALL YOU GOT? OH I KNOW YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN YOUR MEDS YET. SO TAKE YOUR MED AND RUN ALONG.

  • To everyone who keeps asking - YES THAT IS PHIL SPECTOR! It is him before he became a monster.

The guy on the right playing the guitar is PHIL SPECTOR. Yes, it's PHIL SPECTOR!

Please stop asking. It's PHIL SPECTOR, get it?

  • @net144 Just one question,Is that Phil Spector?

  • @iw32 No it's his clone. Puleze people what part of Phil Spector playing the guitar and writing the song in memory of his father don't you compehend.

Phil was just a short shrimpy guy who eventually let his success make him one of the most narcisstic men on the planet.

His fortuitous rise to the top ended with his fall to the depths of evil. Remember when you climb the ladder of succes be prepared to meet those who you stepped on when you fall off that ladder.

  • @net144 I was just kidding with you....

  • I knew that it was Spector before he became the monster ronnie spector knew him as

  • IS that a teenage Phil spector on the guitar?

  • @Freyja1133 Yes, it is...I think he is around 18 at this time.

  • And sometimes.....to know, know, know him.......is to get the hell, hell, away from HIM!! I mean, sometimes WHAT you see...is NOT what you get. YIKES!

  • phil rip

  • @makalavena Oh, Phil's not dead...he is just doing time in prison. Of course, I guess a 19 yr sentence at his age he might as well be dead, But he is alive and kicking, last I heard.

  • This was the first record that I ever owned. I only had one and played it over and over until I had saved enough for another.

  • To my wonderful friend Tony B. To know you was to love you and I do. From Donna

  • I love this song, I understand that Elvis loved Carol Connors voice and wished to meet her. Her voice is perfection x

  • So the guy with the guitar was Phil Spector...

  • Check out The Legend of Super Green for some intense teddy bear action!

  • A Musical Genius, But Jeez What a Scumbag in his Personal Life..." "Outstretch Thy Slimy Hand PS, From Your Cold & Clammy Cell....Satan Demands a Hefty Price, When to Him Your Soul U Sell.......

They Only Rival The Fuckin Steel Bars...That Encapsulate Your Mind.......

  • @CelticBadBoyPoet7

Erm. And who was the FIRST person Christ decided to bring up to Paradise with him? Jesus, you Christians really ought to try behaving a little more like Christ.

  • @votemiles

And end up being crucified? Are you nuts?

  • @votemiles Ok So Whats Ur Point????...U Get What U Give in Life....And That Applies to The Rothchilds on Down.......

  • Hard to believe such a piece of human detritus was capable of writing such a beautiful song-- taken from his late father's epitaph, as the story goes. Off-topic, perhaps: Eva Duarte-Peron's epitaph is "Do not cry, Argentina." Sorry, those are the only headstone inspirations I know of.

  • @therealjoebloggs

Making a song from his Old Man's epitaph...

Perhaps Spector only wanted to remind of his father? Think about Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World" she wrote in memory of her best friend's fatal car accident? Or Dolly Parton's wonderful "I Will Always Love You" about her splitting with Porter Wagoner? Would you blame them, too?

    Nope!

  • @LancetTrooper I meant that Phil Spector, at one time, long ago, was capable of writing a beautiful song commemorating his father, whose untimely death obviously hit Phil very hard, and Phil was able to channel his feelings into the song. I didn't mean to imply Phil was a ghoul. However, he soon turned into a douche bag whose enablers let him become the monster he became.

  • Amy Winehouse live version on Jonathon Ross is amazing

  • our SKATING RINK DAYS !!!! we would skate for an hour or so then..... we would take off our skates and go in the bathroom comb our hair freshen our lipstick and "THE DANCE" would start !!!! every Friday nite ! in good ole Pa !

  • すげーかっこいい

  • eeek when he goes ahhh ahh ahh ahh ahhh looking into the camera , wonder what he's thinking, maybe one day im gonna be famous for music and infamous for killing some random woman i picked up who tried to nick my wig

  • Sorry, meant to say Annette Kleinbard!

  • this is linda fuller.

  • @betweenholidays1 This is Annette Kleinrard.

  • Phil looks so wonderfully creepy in this, like a minor character in a David Lynch film

  • sweet

  • hahaha a crush on someone always seems to me to hurt just as bad as a romantic bond to someone HEAVY LOL OHHH FARDENXXOO

  • yes you dont mess with best, cos the best don't mess,,and these were the best better than dolly twatt face,,

  • Such a sweet, sweet song.

  • this song and the way it was sung was a very big part of what i like about the fifties..

the songs were understandable to me at least...and the singers were clean cut and pure looking regardless of what they did on the side..its was not broadcast like it is today..we just wanted to hear them sing and perform....all the crap you hear about todays singers and actors...mostly made up....just sells mags and makes someone rich...when will we ever learn....stop giving your money away to these people.

  • my first romantic dance was to this charming track which still sounds just as fresh and sweet as it did all those years ago.

  • i love this song...today when i was at school... this song came at me out of nowhere in my head...i kept humming it but i didnt know what the name was but then eventuallY!! i got it...lol.... love this song.... so sweet....

  • The perfect love song. Beautiful singing from all three. I think the ones who have given the thumbs down to this are doing so more as a 'two fingers' to Spector. Whatever he has done (and it doesn't get much worse than what he's done!) you can't deny this is a great song.

  • beautiful voice form a very beautiful lady, thanks for the memories

  • Do you think Phil Spector regrets killing Lana Clarkson ??

  • @johnhharley48 No, he was a manipulating psycho from day one.

  • I agree 100% with you. If today's singer and their music last as long as this music the world will still be filled with violence, agressive sex, agressive words and disrespect, whith some laudable exceptions of course.

  • I love this song, I could listen to it on repeat for hours. The female lead is amazing, her vocals are pitch perfect. Incidentally I have just listened to Amy Winehouse sing this, out of curiosity, well if you take a listen, Im sure you will come to the same conclusion as me!!!!!!!

  • The background singers really make this song work. She has a wonderful voice but the two guys shouldn't be discounted. When she pours on the power they are right there with her not getting drowned out. What a wonderful performance I truly love this song and have for ever!

  • @FredCDobbs00 she carries this song, the other guys are along for the ride. I'd like to hear her have sung it alone, no doubt it would be fantastic

  • Temazo , feliz dia a todos los papas.

  • this song is GREAT i love this song. It means so much to me :))

  • Great song. thanks for posting.

  • 56 doesn't know him

  • How 56 people can dislike that?

  • @corcurezo Your right, how can 56 people not like this. They have probably listened to Amy Winehouses's version and think it should be sung slurred through drink and drugs. The Teddy Bears sing this to absolute perfection. As Jhardy133 says this is when singers WERE singers and could sing

  • The "him " in this song is Phil Spector's father. And as I understand "To know him was to love him" is on his father's grave.

  • I remember roller skating back wards with my partner those were the days

  • @biskiers eh?

  • @biskiers What an incredibly simple but infinitely sweet memory that must be for you. Bravo!!

  • I was going to say, "As wholesome and American as baseball and apple pie." but then again, with all the corruption and drugs in baseball these days and scientists messing around with the genetic enginerring of our fruits and vegetables, it's difficult to find that old America anymore. Still, what a great song.

  • I was not even born yet but grew up to these awesome oldies...always sang this as a lil kid....this is when music was music, while being enjoyable to the ear, hopeful, smooth, and style..unlike the majority of todays attempts...well, that rap crap anyway lol...

  • @Oldiesbuff925 a lot of people hate on rap but there isnt much quality being put out in any genre these days

  • Wow. I have liked this song ever since I heard it for the first time. So sweet. And I had never seen this clip before. Until now. So sweet.

  • lovely song

  • I agree, this music and era is a solid part of music history. like you said, today there is too much gimmickery. Strip the over produced and over processed vocals and you have nothing The words megastar and superstar are FAR OVERUSED now. Im willing to bet Sinatra didn't hear those words for many years, and he (and others)had to earn it and when he did, it was well deserved. I would pay $10 to see a group like this in a club way before I would take a free ticket to see that Brittny chick or gaga

  • If not for this we would not have had Be my baby

  • Sue "B" you did it again. HOW can a human being choose--1 or 2 out of such gems sent on your e-mails? Your 45 plus sometimes at at time; 'Whelmed me. THIS is a sample of "MEMORIES-PAST + magnificent." It was too much to bear daily makeing the decisions I had to make; clicking away. IT is tortureous for sure. Forgive my faltering on the Sacred space that I am pulling away from that has been hampering my work I must do completeing my contract with Mother Gaia.(OMG this tune 1st time in eons.:) <3

  • Written by Phil Spector, inspired by the words on his father's tombstone. Sorta puts a different spin on the lyrics.

  • Shucks, even pretty Chinese girl know that.

  • Needs auto-tune and a meat dress

  • WONDERFUL SONG ! I LOVE IT <3

  • Fantastic video and no lip-sinking, although good lip-sinking was an art unto itself!!! Wow Annette Kleinbard was a total looker. Did she not record under the name of Annette Bard ? Great vocals from all.

  • @errolflynn451 She became Carol Connors. Check out her web site. She has a ton of hits to her credit.

  • Spector was a genious

the guy could write and arrange

  • Get your 45's out of the basement and don't put them in the attic either. put them in plastic bind in sleeves in a cool dry space.

  • I too was 11 and had the same crush! Fantastic - still sounds great!

  • Phil Spector is icon on rock n roll , he's my idol !

  • I dedicated this song to my husband at our wedding. It was the last song of the evening, & everyone gathered around us in a circle holding hands. That was 22years ago this July, & knowing my husband all those years has only made me love him more! xoxo

  • Great song, - Ajax, (Toronto) ONTARIO, CANADA

  • Today you never have a chance to find a Girl like this.
