Hi, I love this method, but do have a slight problem. I have arthritis in my hands and find it really difficult to pin my blocks without getting tucks in them. What I was wondering was if you think it would work if I tried a spray adhesive?
@equilt1 Hi, thank you for asking! Yes, Sarah tells me that she has had several students in her classes use basting sprays without any issues at all :) Marguerita
I thought I would try to do your method without buying the book, but I finally decided that I better have the complete instructions, so I ordered from Amazon. Was I surprised! It's a beautiful book!! :-) Very good job, ladies! Thanks for you efforts in putting the book and the videos together. I think this method of backing, sashing, and quilting will work with paper piecing methods too (another shortcut method of quilt making). :-)
@MEStephKJV Thank you!! Yes, the methods in the book are adaptable for many quilt types and it sounds like you've got all kinds of ideas - - Good for you!!!
the blocks are done - came together easily & are just beautiful! it was so much fun & u don't get bored - all different & only 9 to do! Decorative stitching/quilting this aft - can't wait!!
@a1angiem Isn't it hard to believe how fast the cutting and sewing goes? Have fun with the quilting - I always sit in front of the machine taking forever to decide which stitch to use on each seam :)
@a1angiem YAY!! Be sure to check out all the related videos on the seam allowance width and squaring up, and I'm going to make one on doing the decorative stitches too - coming soon :) Marguerita
@CrazyShortcutQuilts i re-read the book this morning waiting for my snow tires to be put on and I'm more excited than ever! getting fabric tomorrow. going to start with the table runner. if i don't need the placemats, how much less fabric should i get? then i'm going to make the medium brown quilt next! thank you SO much - i love it!!!!! always wanted to use those stitches on my machine.
@a1angiem The basic rule of these quilts is: use the same number of fat quarters as you want to have finished blocks. So, if you wanted a table runner with 5 blocks in it, use 5 fat quarters :) Oh, I just love using all the pretty stitches! You're going to really enjoy this :) ~M
@CrazyShortcutQuilts that's easy enough! great tip b/c i wanted to make the quilt a little bigger too! so as i understand, there will not be a layer of batting in the sashing area, correct? does that make the quilt drape differently? thanks so much for the replies! happy thanksgiving to you all!
@a1angiem Hi, When you are done, you'll see that the quilts drape just like any other quilt and yes, there is batting in the sashing :) I know that the sashing can be confusing when you first read the book, but once you have your quilted blocks and stashing pieces in hand, it all comes together :) If you want, you can try this --- In our classes, we have the students sash together two small "tester" squares - 4" square - and that often helps them understand the process and seam allowance. ~M
love this! waiting on a library loan, chance i won't get it.. i may have to consider buying the book... in the meantime, how wide do you cut the sashing?? thanks and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU FAMILY,, wonderful!
@LEORofYAHWEH When you get the book you'll see that there's a whole chapter about the sashing - there's a lot of factors to consider before you start cutting fabrics :) Hang in there and see if maybe your local quilt guild might have the book to loan? Once you've had the chance to read it through and see the pics you will be glad you waited for it! Marguerita
That helps a lot, but can I make a suggestion? For directions like this it would make it much easier for me to see if you used really contrasting fabrics. I am finding it hard when they are so similar in colour. This is not meant as a criticism!
Thnank you though, for all the videos, they are a lot of help! I can't wiat to get started on mine!!!
@robgrace420 Hi, I agree and I have been told that by others too - - I will remember that for future videos and thanks very much for your note! Marguerita :)
I've been looking for patchwork quilt instructions on youtube for an hour and not one video in all that time has been as helpful as you just were in a few seconds!! I have inspiration and tools from my Grandmother-in-law but she lives far from me and says she is too old to patchwork anymore so I needed help. I want to make a cot quilt for my pregnant friend. I will make a video of my progress and send it to you. Thank you so much! I will come back to check out your blog very soon. XO Cass
I learned that technique in class, i like the way you showed it. May as you go you get better. I learned watching you that squaring up helps. Mine was sloppy and it gave me migraines. I saw your book at the book club, next time I see it I probably will buy it. I just was over my limit I did want it. Thanks you video was great.
I have one problem. I've done all of my squares and I'm ready to square them up. Problem is I have a 12 1/2" square ruler and my block is going to be 15". I can't get my hands on a 20" square ruler so I'm stuck as to how to make the squaring up process easier. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi, I took a very quick video of how to trim up your squares using two rulers - - please let me know if it helps or not :) YT won't let me post a link here - you have to go to my channel and look in the playlist for Crazy Shortcut Quilts Book --- I have several video tips posted there!
use an air erasable pen to mark 12 and add 3 inches. or mark the 3 then square up the 12. the blue air erase disappears without water in a few days like one or two
I was looking for something to do with all the scraps that I had from other quilting projects, and when I came across this vid, I went out and bought this book. I started the wuilt today and with as quick as it is going I will have it done in no time. Thanks so much, Keep up the great work!!
Hi there! Thank you so much! Please stop by my blog and check out the free pattern there for another quilt pattern that goes with the ones in the book :)
@karryant love this also, waiting on a library loan... nothing wrong with mixing good ideas, so punch in "crazy quilt" by homegrownhappyblog... great tutorial... you'll love it!! shalom
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone interested in making a crazy quilt. By far, the best book I have come across with projects that you will want to complete.
I am a new sewer....taught myself to machine sew about a month ago and now I'm going crazy over quilting!!!
This book was perfect for me. Video makes it even better.....thanks so much for posting the video!
Let me know if there are other techniques you would like to see demonstrated - I love making sewing and quilting videos that help show the techniques I've learned. I am trying to upload at least one a month - hopefully more :) TYVM, Marguerita
Oh my goodness! I LOVE this book! I purchased it a while back and bought fabric to make a quilt. However, I am a visual learner and have to SEE something done before I can "get it" and do it myself. I am so glad a found your video. I now feel confident that I can take my material and actually DO the quilt! Thank you so much for posting this!
