It can do it by itself (you have to select AF-F when you're in the live view mode), but I wouldn't really recommend it, obviously it sucks when the lens keeps focussing and thus the picture often gets blurry for some time, not to mention the noise a focusing lens produces.
It's better to focus prior to filming or to focus only when really necessary and focusing manually is probably the best solution.
the lens that comes with the kit is REALLY loud when it focuses. I feel like it ruins the video. Would it be best to use an external mic? And if so, does anyone suggest a good one for the nikon d5100?
I want to explain this to you guys but i don't know many technical terms, so i'll try my best. turn on your nikon d5100 and hit your LV switch which switches the display to the screen rather than the viewfinder. once you have done this, hit the information button located to the right of your viewfinder eyepiece. bypass image quality, image size, and release mode. once you get to focus mode, hit OK. it is probably set to single-servo AF, you want it on Full-time-servo AF. Select this and hit OK.
@aprilshowers101lol However, the af detection in video mode is crap, and you'll still need to half press the shutter button to "help" it refocus properly while afing as it doesn't get it right all the time.
I don`t understand how u did it. Can you please explain the settings u used to make it Autofocus when recording a video? I just got mine nikon d5100 so I am kinda lost :)
is there anyway that I can set the camera to focus on its own. I can auto focus while I am recording but I have to press down on the shot button to the first stop before it autofocuses. is there anyway to bypass this and just have the camera autofocus by itself while filming?
This is a good visual reference after reading about "contrast-detection" type AF that's necessary in Live View with any DSLR. It would be interesting to see the same test on the Canon 60D. I just read DPReview's reviews on both that and the D5100 and it sounds like the Canon is a little worse for this.
@stupidfreak101 Look the lens, there is one "A" for Automatic and one "M" for Manual, just put on the "M" and now the front of you're lense is dislocked, you can play with the focus :). (Sorry, i'm french, my english isn't so very well :p)
@YouCMeTrollin Thanks. What's his portfolio? Is it w w w [dot ]activityphoto [dot] com ? Because I can't think of anyone paying to get photos like these!
Thanks. Good test. If you could do one with the D5100 tracking a moving object (like a car), that would be nice. I have the 50mm f/1.4G too and it's amazing :)
What a dumb test, yes it shows how fast the AF is but doesn't address the continuos focus question. What the tester needed to do was focus on a subject that was moving towards the camera, or focus then zoom and see if keeps up in a smooth camcorder method.
@ActivityPhoto What a dumb comment! 64 years old and haven't learned how to write a courteous comment yet?! If you didn't like the video and had nothing nice to say you didn't have to say anything. If you wanted to give a useful feedback then you should've shown more respect than calling the user's effort dumb.
@001FJ Who asked for your comment in the first place. Then you go ahead and reword and tell the presenter exactly what I did, only SUGAR COATED it. Most adult can take the truth is a straight forward manner, only those overly PC concerned individuals would take issue with my straight to the point comment. And just how old are you, about 16 like so many of the reviewers here on Youtube!
@ActivityPhoto If you are an adult how come you don't seem to handle it very well because I pointed out that your comment was dumb? By the way, I am 28 years old. Why make fun of 16 years olds? Weren't you 16 years old one day, or are you that SPECIAL. Or does it just make you feel mature by going on YouTube and troll on videos of people you think they are 16 years old? The autofocus doesn't work very well in mine :/ or maybe I'm just doing something wrong...

half the video is titles. God how lame.

So responsive, but I'd rather use manual focus for filming.

how do you get your lens to focus without making so much noise? In the video you can clearly hear the lens moving.. its really annoying!
livelaughlover32 4 months ago 2
@livelaughlover32
Buy a lens which makes less noise ;-)
It just depends on the lens, some make a lot of noise, some don't.
Of course you can also use an external microphone if you have a D5100.
HingerlAlois 1 month ago
Less noise when focusing. The 18-55 too much noise in focusing
imranclickable 7 months ago
How did you manage to achieve auto focus without the horrible motor noise?

@PhunnyPunny same thing here. did u solved it already?

@zphersia No the only solution i can think of though is to use a remote and hit the shutter button to focus it, which isnt too useful.

@stupidfreak101 you have to push the info change button and change the focus option to contin. focus. than you can record things on this way.
