Stockwood came across as patronising, vain and self righteous. Muggeridge was his usual zealot like self. Muggeridge was a Catholic convert who had previously been a communist atheist- hence the zealotry enthusiasm. They completely missed the film's message about religious mania and which is all too prevalent in today's society. today's society. Life of Brian was a work of genius and the only one who comes close in terms of humour and satire is Chris Morris with his Four Lions.
Seems strange that a bishop would complain about their treatment of the subject of death, since presumably he would believe in in heaven and the after life, and therefore should see death as something glorious.
@indy8149 Well loads of people look for the full debate, I have a feeling someone might record and upload it to youtube. I'll send you a message or something if I find it on here after its been on tv :)
regardless of what i think of religion (atheist ) my real problem is suggesting jesus is the greatest man who ever lived what of charles darwin, einstein, issac newton, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dr Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Ghandi etc. I realise Im picking a fight with christianity more than defending the film which is brilliant, besides religion will carry on despite how hard common sense logically argues otherwise. HE'S NOT THE MESSIAH HES A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!
Did Malcom Muggeridge forgotten all great civilization before Christ? Did he forgotten the marvelous poets, phylosophers, architects, artists that existed in the Greek civilization? Even for that year, this is retograde thinking.
*My firm belief is that they (Muggeridge and Stockwood) needed a propper fuck... just to lighten up.
A serial shagger (Muggeridge) and an in the closet gay bishop (Stockwood) pretend to be offended out of a sense of duty rather than any genuine moral ire. If LOB had been made 10 years earlier it wouldn't have got past the censor but thankfully it did even though in my then native city of Hull the local council got it banned.
Which Python plays the bishop? he is so ridiculous that he can not be a real existing person, I think he is a trainee of the Academy of Spanish Inquisition: my question is..., my two quest... my three questions are..., even the Uniform, although an other shade of red and without the funny hat. MP should have incorporated this debate in their next film about the spanish Inquisition (with Brian just hanging around, singing music hall songs).
@armadafanforever Actually it seems they were just doing it to play to the crowd! They went back to 'normal' as soon as they were backstage. That's what the pythons said in one of the documentaries anyway. They're not being vindictive, they're being insincere. The fools.
@themontypythonmuseum I know that, but what I was referring to was him saying "I have a question." Then rambling on for about five minutes about things that have nothing to do with the film or the matter at hand
@themontypythonmuseum It makes it very surreal---almost as if it WAS a Python sketch. Life imitating...well, you know. Still, the Bishop comes off as a pompous ass in this, totally unsympathetic and stereotypical, and finding out that it was mostly done to be deliberately perverse or for show makes him even more unsympathetic. The Pythons appear completely sincere.
did they ever make another film?

i disliked it as it incomplete

Personally I would've had sex rather than switch on the tv and listen to this Bishop's blubbering nonsense.

Decades later, and our Life of Brian is effectively a national treasure.
phocjame 3 months ago 2
Here's the thing, you never hear the religious comedians complaining about things like life of Brian because THEY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR!!!
Katysguy 3 months ago
As someone who's name is Brian, I thought Palin's reason for using the name Brian to be terrific... then again, I AM Canadian as well.
Smalltown125 3 months ago
Did the two of them actually miss the beginning of the film, meaning they didn't actually see Jesus at the start?

Oh god if Michael Palin was 30 years younger... ;)

I'd like to think we now live in a better, more intellectual world... But we still have religious hinderance :-\

I love the fact that the Bishop and Malcolm didn't even see the first 15 minutes of the film so they missed the whole fucking joke (Y)

The introduction to this program is more controversial than Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Loved the Bishop's comments about Mao being on the dog heap. Look at China today.

Is there a full version of this anywhere? I can never find a complete version of the actual "debate" part.

The Bishop is hilarious. He steals the show (An alcoholic and gay, incidentally. No hypocrisy there.) Thank you so much for posting this.

Host: "What was your review of the film?"
Bishop: *talks about Jesus' importance in modern society for five minutes*

This has been flagged as spam show
@Krunkalunga That would have made a good python sketch Host: "What was your review of the film?"
Bishop: *talks about Jesus' importance in modern society for five minutes*
Then camera moves to John at the desk 'and now for something completely different'
