I was lent this bogner cab for my ultralead when I was awaiting a fatbottom cabinet and imo a vht only really sounds like a vht with its own cab. that's probably because mr. fryette designed his own speakers to go with his amps.
@svenzia Most of my videos are done with either a Zoom Q3 or Q3HD video camera, but these older videos were done on a crappy digital camera that didn't give the sound the justice it needs.
These demos are perfect for tone chasers. You are one solid player too. Great touch, you could probably make a Gorilla amp sound good! Question: What do you mean that the Landry is more "open?" Please do a single coil test too. Thanks.
@bscfo1 Thanks man! When I use the term "open", I'm really saying an amp is less "compressed" than alot of other amps. Less distorted and fluid, I guess. A bigger cleaner more "open" sound. Not sure how to describe that in words, but that should give you an idea.
The Landry sounded killer with single coils. Unfortunately, I no longer have most of the gear you see in my videos. I went through a big splurge over several years with buying, selling, and trading. Now I'm down to basics.
@bscfo1 I made a Gorilla amp sound fantastic back in, "The Day". I used a OD pedal and a Sustain pedal in front of a Tube Stack Gorilla amp. It sounded like a Marshall, well kind of. It sounded pretty cool at the time!
I see. So with two ET-65's you're getting a nice smooth and rich sound. Would that combination be suitable for harder, more aggressive rock or metal too? Maybe I'll try a Black Shadow or CL80. Thanks again, -Jordan.
@cordanscedo I think two ET65s are great for hard rock or metal. I don't know about "brutal metal" or whatever, but I know these speakers work great for hard rock. They're not overly smooth to me. No harshness, but not muffled either.
@SgtThump Awesome, thanks! Yeah, not looking for "brutal" just thick, rich and something with depth if that makes any sense. I might just take your advice and try two 65's!
@cordanscedo I've had the Veteran 30 and ET65 in the Bogner cab and the Vet30 was louder. It almost sounded like two Vet 30s. I assume it would be the same with the VIntage 30, but I'm not positive.
I agree with Darth - great reviews, but having gone through the same amount and type of amps, just spend the $2-300 and get a Lehle ABC pedal!! It makes things so much easier. Great playing and comparisons.
@mattyjames2 I'd have to get one of those Radial HeadBone switcher deals if I wanted to switch between two heads into one cab. I only have one head right now anyway and two combo amps, so I don't have to worry about it now anyway. (but I'm sure I will in the future)
Hey, right now I've got a Vox 4x12 with 4 nothing special 30W speakers in it. I've been looking at those Warehouse Guitar Speakers for a while now, and I was wondering what models you'd recommend?
I play mostly hard rock (think Coheed and Cambria) and progressive metal (think Between the Buried and Me.)
So I'd need something with a fairly tight bottom end, and smooth mids and upper mids. I've been told Veteran 30s are good, but I'm not sure about the bottom end.
Hey Chris, I lost your email but wanted to tell you my Egnater Elite 80 speakers are killing it, and I ordered Celestion G12K-100s. Your clips always sound killer bro.
R u putting the amps at the same settings? or trying to put them at the same sound? Do u have a video of the two amps with the settings all at 12 o'clock, or anything so we could hear them set even?
I actually thought quite a bit about how to do this and I came up with this... I set each amp to where I'd normally set it. I dialed each amp in to sound the best to me and totally disregarded where the knobs were in relation to each other.
He's saying that maybe a CL model would be closer to the Landry.
On that subject, I've had a couple of 50CL heads before too and they're darker than the UL. Darker and smoother. I like the UL quite a bit more myself!
hey, you don't have either of those on without a speaker calbe hooked up, do you? that will FRY the output transformers, if you don't, or have a dummy load hooked up. just checking....i like your vids and just happend to notice that it seemed that way.
You only need a speaker load when your running the power amp tubes. If you start an amp up without the power amp tubes then you don't need a load on the other side to compensate for all power the tubes are putting out. When on stand by you also interrupt all power to the power amp (except heaters) so you can run without a speaker load then as well. All other times it is necessary.
...alternate between the 3 Licks you know....LOL..Although I haven't caught all of your vids YET it seems you REALLY LIKE the bridge "BBQ" pup. Be nice to hear the neck BB by itself with a snidge less dirt to maybe hear some harmonic bells...or the middle pos to hear the TAMING of the BBQ with some tonal pot adjustments on both pups....but...it's just a thought..(-)(-)..LOVE the "original" VHT there.
I loved the BBQ bridge pickup for a good while. I've had one in a Les Paul Custom, my R8 Les Paul, a hardtail partscaster, etc... It's a smoking pickup!
But I admit that the dark nature was starting to get on my nerves a bit, so I changed out the pickups in my Les Paul to Fralins. They are awesome. Still fat, but with nice highs. Really nice pickups!
These two amps are not the only ones that sound similar. In fact, it seems like ALL of your amps get exactly the same sound. The sound is awesome, and I have to say that it's one of the best tones I have ever heard. But I really don't hear any difference between them.
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. The video camera does make most of them sound very similar. I guess some of that is the way I play, some is the way I dial amps in, and then the video camera.
In person, the differences are much more noticeable, but they still all cover the same ground I guess.
You sound truly badass through every amp I've heard you play! Great playing, great tone! You're Shiva/Les Paul vids helped me decide to buy a Shiva this morning ;-) Cheers dude!
I get a fair amount of crap online from people because a) I don't shred and b) I tend to play the same crap over and over in these videos.
But hey, I am what I am. When I sit down to noodle on an amp, I play what you hear in these videos. When I'm gigging with a band, it's a whole other thing. I mean, I still don't shred, but I do alternate between the 3 licks I know a little more often than you see in these videos. :)
The VHT sounds a bit darker and the Landry has a bit more of a mid-spike to my ears, and a bit more glassyness on the high end. However, you sound pretty much the same through either amp. I know the Ultra-Lead can get plenty heavy for modern rock or metal, but how is the Landry in that regard?
Yep, the differences are definitely as you described. They're even more noticeable in person, of course.
The Landry has a looser bottom end than the VHT. Not flubby or anything, but looser for sure. Kinda like a single channel JCM800, but with even "more" of everything.
Damn I like your sound, I think the Landry has more versatility for any rock/metal sound, I dunno, never played one. You should go for Groovetubes Gold series EL34 if you want the ultimate sound, I put those in my Mesa Mark IV and it really blew me away!
Thanks man. Both amps rock hard, no doubt! That Landry is a real sleeper right now, since they're a newly formed company. The word is getting out, though. It's an incredible amp.
I also love the Ultra-Lead, but just traded it off for a Diezel Einstein. I had an Einstein before and wanted to revisit it. I'll have a video of that up soon.
Yeah, I agree. This fat bearded guy is a total hack. He should probably just give it up altogether.
He's also apparently really dumb. Everyone knows that when you try to demonstrate an amp's tone in videos, you should also try to impress people with mad skillz. Sheessss. What a moron he is. Probably can't play anything but chords.
The VHT sounds more "congested" as the Landry sounds a lot more open and smooth. I really think that Landry could basically cover any type of rock/metal.
That's exactly how it sounds in the room too! Everyone knows this, but you can't get the "real" thing over YouTube clips. Lucky for you, you get to experience it in real life. :) Congrats! I think you'll dig it.

How do you think the VHTs compare to something like the Bogner Shiva and/or Diezel Einstein for thickness, clarity and organic tone?
richedie 2 years ago
In general, I think the VHT UL and Deliverance amps have alot more "punch" than the Bogner Shiva or Diezel Einstein.
Both the Einstein and VHT stuff have bigger and tighter lows than the Shiva too.
It's hard to compare their thickness, clarity, and organic tone, since those terms mean different things to different people.
Out of those three amps, my favorite would be the VHT Ultra-Lead. It's a killer amp IMO!
