to tell the truth arrows are actually more effective than bullets. sure bullets go further and faster but theyre usually so hot when they impact that they actualy cauterize shut veins. thus the target doesent bleed as much as if they had been shot by arrow.
@Harvest8888 True that arrows are a lot less humane but theyre technically a more effective way of fighting when you get right down to it. Sure they lack range and penetration. but an arrow does cause more bleeding because it makes a clean slice. bullets splinter and mushroom on impact causing unclean cuts. and by clean and unclean I dont mean sanitation. I mean the lines its cut on.
@confederatekid3 Just liked to add something aswell. Bows (good bows like English longbows for example) can take up to 4 years to make. You cut the wood from a yew tree and you treat it for 4 years, and after that you then make the cow horn tips and add the hemp string etc. Also arrows are damn expensive to make and take too long. Muskets can be made in a short amount of time, after all it's a bit of wood with a metal barrel and a switch mechanism, also soldiers can make their own ammunition.
@grobo11 To tell the truth, thats just if you need something that will last you a long time. I can find a green branch, cut it down, and string it up and i'll have something that'll last me a little while. And that whole "soldiers can make their own ammunition" aint true. Often times they fought in grassy places or woods. Those grassy/ wooded places have almost NO rocks or anything like that. However, I could pick up a stick, knock it, whittle a point, and be ready to fight in under a minute.
@confederatekid3 Soldiers carried the lead and othe rmaterials with them on campaigns to make their ammounition obviously. Also, the whole point of a bow is to last a long time. Bows are made from certain types of trees e.g. Yew trees, you can't pick up any old bit of drift wood, as some string to it and then expect it to work, it just wont happen.
Also, if you're fighting in a melee' style i.e. when you're talking about sharpening a stick, the soldier could just attach a bayonet.
@grobo11 Thats only if you NEED something to last. and most bayonets of this time were plug bayonets, meaning you couldnt fire and still have your bayonet. It was also hard to lock your bayonet into place. And a bows just a quick way to make a weapon if your missing something else. And you cant mold lead without tools. They just poured powder, shoved the ball in and fired. they carried lead balls with them for your info, and also they were extremely innacurated until rifling.
@confederatekid3 Plug bayonest were only used in hunting, they used socket bayonets in this period, all armies did, I don't know where you got that info from. No, soldiers carried round the tools and other means to make their lead balls and powder, trust me, read anybook about soldiers in the 18th anc early 19th century and you'll find that this was a common practice. It doesn't matter if they're innacurate, they fired by a wall of me who will hit something when in range.
@grobo11 I think its you thats got the bad info. In this century they were still developing the bayonet, and the plug was still around. there werent many socket bayonets, though I will admit there were some. And they didnt quite actively use bayonets in hunting. if you knew anything you'd know the bayonet was made to replace pike men, hence why so many muskets were long, also for accuracy increase. And actually it wasnt the soldiers themselves, it was a designated man in the company.
@confederatekid3 No my info is fine. Do you not know the origins of the bayonet? It came from French hunters in an area of France who stook a plug bayonet on the end of their muskets to finnish off a prey, mostly wild boar. Militaries saw this as a practical tool and so adopted it without the plug and converted it into a socket bayonet.
@confederatekid3 But range can be a key factor. Not to mention that arrows can be blocked by wood, while bullets can punch straight through. Also, bows take more experience to use effectively, where rifles need less training. And if you are leading a troop of fresh troops, rifles are definitely more effective. Not to mention more economical.
@confederatekid3 youve obviosly dont have any experience with guns. if you were to shoot a deer with a gun its going to go down a hell of alot faster than if you shot it with a bow. guns are much more affective than bows, thats why they were invented
@99ACE97 ooh id be careful with that statement, guns were more effective against ARMOUR, but it wasnt stopping power, it was the fact everyone could learn to use them fairly qickly that made them so popular, also, guns were cheaper to manufacture than crossbows, the only other major contender ith the arquebus in terms of armour piercing power
@confederatekid3 They only cauterize the blood vessels which the bullet stops near. Not the ones that the bullet passes through. They keep bleeding. But the bullet is short and therefore there is a small pit created in the persons wound. This allows for the sides of that pit to be open, causing massive bleeding. The arrow stick out of a person when they're hit, therefore closes the sides of the pit and stops bleeding.
@ivanspajic1 Not to mention a poorly made bullet of that time could break apart on impact and due more widespread damage. Also a arrow can glance of a bone while a bullet will shatter a bone which in turn the bone peices do more damage as well. though still, a arrow looks like it hurts more
downhill is a very bad position

@Harvest8888 Give them about 15 shots, and add a serious arc to the arrows. Would it still be OP? And by serious, I don't mean overdone.
