The story goes that Rudy Vallee's marriage was in trouble but when his wife heard him sing this song they decided to stick together and the marriage was saved! Aaaaah!
@alexhuxley1 Thanks for this great story. Heres another part: Rudy first saw his wife when she was the girl on a magazine cover. He was so infatuated with the sexy illustration he tracked down the artist that did her picture and got in contact with the model, then began working on her till she agreed to marry him! I read about it in a 1934 Liberty magazine story of Rudy's life. The whole concept of "falling in love with the girl on the magazine cover" was later used in musicals.
Thanks for uploading this. There's a 94-year-old woman here in Bedford, PA, who knew Dick Powell when he was an MC in a local movie theater. She'd see him every Saturday until he went to Hollywood.
@bedfordbanjoshop Thanks for this awesome story Mike! I bet that elderly gal must have been so proud to follow Dicks carreer and soon see him up on that big movie screen, where she saw him standing on that stage earlier! Amazing! Thanks for sharing this great story!
I totally agree with you. Thanks for writing out this fond remembrance of your folks. This is a lovely and special old song! Glad you liked it. Thanks for your comments.
When I was young (early 1950s) I remember my father playing piano & singing, among others, this song to my mother, especially when in her doghouse for some escapade (don't get me wrong, my parents were crazy about each other). Great song, among many beautiful songs of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, & 50s; an era when music was composed by geniuses & lyrics were written by poets & gleefully played & sung by my parents & their friends.
THEY were gentler, nobler race of human beings. Thank you for sharing.
@msociable Well thankyou very much! Thats a great compliment! Dick Powell had a great voice and screen persona! His old movies are a joy. This was an important early song of his to save. Enjoy!
@ekam83 Glad you liked this. You've got good taste in music and movies! Imagine if all the tunes and films of the thirties were taken away. We'd never see The Wizard of Oz,or King Kong, Ruby Keeler or Jean Harlow films, plus the best of Gable ,Cagney,Shearer and Garbo, no Berkley Warner musicals and no singing Dick Powell! Yikes!
This is a surprise! My grandmother used to hold her black scotty dog Bingo on her lap and if he didnt lick her face, and try to get down, she would hug him tight and sing this to him, and make us kids laugh at her! Great memories, This is so 30s! Another great upload. Thanks alot.

Thank you for this song-I had a crush on him long after he was young. That's one of the magic things about the movies, isn't it?
