I am also a big fan of bassist like Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Derek Boyer, etc. But, using a pick doesn't make you a bad bassist, just like finger style or slapping, it's a technique to make your bass growl ,and of course, pick creates a different voice from fingers n thumb, it's like a combination of both, a brightness of slap with attack of fingers, and my other fav. bassists who play with pick are: Duff Mc. Kagan, Rex Brown, Lemmy Kilmister etc.

It's almost like listening to two different bands these days in music. You have the studio band that has 3-4 guitarists, 2-3 vocalists, the drums are quantized and replaced with samples. The whole recording process is back asswards. Bands need to go back to the old days of live mixes and do more recordings off the floor. All the CDs sound the same these days, over compressed and lifeless. The drums are computers and the snare and kicks sound dull. Sure it has crazy attack but it's 1 dimensional.
