Very enlightening. Real intelligent bloke JM. They managed to touch on many of the great musicians of our modern era in a short time. However I'm surprised Dylan wasn't mentioned even in passing given that Dylan is and has been such a giant through the ages.
What a top bloke Johnny Marr. He is articulate, down to earth and has a great passion for music. That is to say nothing of his phenomenal guitar playing skills. His guitar work with the Smiths was totally unique and incredibly innovative.
I met Morley in the street in Brighton. I approached him and told what an exceptional article he did on Terence Stamp. In Arena. And I followed him and I meant it. He was dismissive. Loved the guy. I am sure that if I met JM, he would give me a minute.
This is really boring., If you're watching it just because of the mention of Steven malkmus, don't bother it's fucking dull. Unless you like middle-aged men speaking ham-fistedly about musical genres for 20 minutes, that is.
@feckingtwot Honestly, I find Johnny's earnest candor refreshing after all these years of watching nerds trying to out do each other's level of Malkmosity
I love Johnny Marr, but Paul Morley is such a Sycophanitic, poor idiot of a 'Yes Man' interviewer. Ask a decent question and make it interesting you tit.
Folk music was an intrinsic part of Beat/Hippie culture in the 60's & it fed directly into all those great West Coast Psychedelic bands like The Dead,Airplane,Love,Byrds,Big Brother,Qucksilvers, Country Joe. Morley take on folk music's development & impact is completely wrong. I'm so bored by Morley's half digested Barthes/Baudrillard analytical approach to pop/rock music something he's always failed to grasp. Ask Jon Savage, fatty Morley he'll explain it to you, and stick to U2, Simple Minds.
The truly loathsome Paul Morley just doesn't get folk music. The idea that this overweight buffoon came to folk music via Marc Bolan is laughable. I find it hilarious how seriously Morley takes Bolan when most people who lived through that period regarded him as nothing more than the Fabian of the 70's. Sure he made some great pop rock singles but in the end his legacy was shallow. Morley should stick to what he knows best, all those dreadful prog punk bands of the 80's. Marr of course is great.
Johnny Marr is an awesome guitarist. He really is a guitar god, totally different to all the "usual suspects" which is cool. He also has a lot to say and seems to be a decent guy.
Thanks darcythorton! My friend becoming is a very good guitarist... has natural ability, so he'll continue to do well, I reckon! I hear 'em playing some nights and am amazed that he hasn't been playin' for years. I just know that one must always know Johnny Marr's contribution to guitar! Again, thanks so much for this upload!
Great interview that I would've never seen here in the States! Thank you soooo very much love! I'm sharing your vid w/a friend who's learnin' guitar (@28 yrs.) and has never been exposed to "The Smiths," "Radiohead," etc.... I know, right! Loads of work to do, eh? LOL
