  • @kurtlane, @napalmpuppet, @skaven77,

Strange to see Mr. Goldberg 'go off the rails' at 01:35 re "German characteristics" "exterminationist anti-semitism in the DNA" etc.

Given Germany had the largest jewish population in Europe prior to WW1 and WW2 their tolerance would be hard to account for with Goldberg's premise. But then familiarity, at close quarters over time, with the behavior of an ethnocentric faction doesn't always breed a high regard.

Add WW1 & totalitarian propaganda and stir.

  • Americans are, alas, very capable of turning into anything. Just like anyone else.

Here is something that I learned from Steven Emerson's book "The American House of Saud":

When a new airport was about to open in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which would service pilgrims going to Mecca, the Saudis offered an American airline company an exclusive contract for the entire Western hemisphere. But there was a condition: everyone on board had to be a Muslim.

    (cont.)

  • So the company gathers all pilots and stewards that would be on board and tells them, "You are all converting to Islam! If you don't, you'll be laid off!"

    And they all did.

  • He is wrong about Fascist Italy and the Jews (not just him, it's a common mistake):

  • The short not quite correct answer to the question asked in Q-A (1) about how socialists and fascists parted company is Nazi Germany's attack on Soviet Union June 22, 1941. The more correct answer lies in that struggle between national and international versions of socialism Goldberg referred to earlier.

  • Liking this stuff. I was abit put off when He stated that the Anti semite feelings of the Germans was part of there DNA. He could of stated the characteristics of the germans were brought out by facism and that The Nazi goverment of the time had purposely spent time changing the chatacteristics of its people in order for the worst in them too be brought out by facism. I knew what he meant. But it could of easily been taken way out of Context.

  • This is a really fantastic book! My father grew up in Germany and I can vouch for the relevence and truth of the similarity between fascists and communists. For most of my life I thought they were very similar. It wasn't until I went to college and found out that most people think they are polar opposites. This fascist/communist spectrum never made sense to me. They are two facets of the same brutal socialism!

It's fantastic that a brilliant author has written such a truthful revelation!

  • Ok i got it now. As a german it is in my dna to hate jews. It's the internal charakteristic of my people if let loose, to attack the whole world and to massacre jews and others. Im a genetical monster programmed by birth to exterminate others.

And if italians or others, like for example americans become fascist, they still remain human and generally nice people - not like me the german, who is more like a demon, a devil allowed to live under the cloak of civilisation.

    Thanks for telling me ...

  • @skaven77 He's using DNA metaphorically.

  • look at what?! look at what?!

  • Fascinating stuff. I've met enough liberals and progressives to know why they find these simple facts confusing.

  • Your contrived distinction, which categorizes one set of observations as "fact" and the other as "opinion", is specious and pointless.

Both points, that Italy joined forces with Nazi Germany AND that Italy wasn't ideologically drawn to the genocidal facet of Nazism, are based on a broad set of observations regarding Italy's behavior during the war. Both are rational conclusions drawn from those observations of the historical record. Both are accurate.

  • @RobTheGamer Of course he believes what he is saying. He isn't a Leftist. He won't knowingly say something deceptive in order to push an agenda. He's a scholar, instead following the available data to logical conclusions that follow. In regards Mussolini and the Holocaust, I suggest you read the available literature on the history of Italian fascism for details.

Perhaps his dedication to evidence is one reason why he does not feel the need to use scatalogical references to make his points.

  • The term "in their DNA" is not a common metaphor for culture. It is a common metaphor for an innate characteristic---not an acquired one. No matter what Goldberg meant, and a agree with him on a great many things though not on American exceptionalism (or, at least, he thinks we are more of an exception than we are), he chose his phrasing badly here. End of story. T

  • Thanks for the subtly disguised insult. I am not certain one can have a "fit of stupor"---but thanks for playing. Look, all I was saying was that it was a bad choice of words.

  • You're welcome.

Assuming your ignorance of the common colloquialism is genuine, the use of the term "it's in their DNA" is a well used and insightful description for a sticky, persistent cultural aspect. Especially one that persists over generations, regardless of the particular individuals in charge. It's commonly applied to cultures, corporations, political parties, etc.

  • In the DNA, that is pretty bad. It was in German culture---not German DNA.

  • It was a metaphor for German culture.

  • It sounds like a metaphor for German race.

  • Only to hair-triggered racialists whose indefensible political theology requires them to lapse into fits of stupor over some of the most commonly used phrases and slangs -- as an attempt to distract from the point -- and, of course, to those whose ignorance is genuine.

  • Well, since by fit you mean only the secondary medical meaning, I will only accuse you of being verbose. Anyway, how was I distracting from Goldberg's point. I was merely attacking his choice of language. Furthermore, to accuse an atheist of practicing a "political theology" shows that you are either very offbase or losed in your own world of terminological insularity.

  • How so?

Atheist minds, as human as any other, hold a full wad of specific beliefs on matters of creation and its creator; otherwise known as one's religion.

Sure, Atheism is the most unexamined and disorganized of all religions, and the most hostile to intellectual inquiry, as well as the most intolerant and murderous; however it's a theology none the less.

  • "In their DNA" means an innate, not an acquired, characteristic. Since culture is acquired, it is objectively wrong to use this phrase to refer to culture. END OF THE FUCKING STORY.

  • Now you're arguing against evolution. In fact, innate characteristics are, by evolution, acquired through the processes of evolution. (The one does not preclude the other.)

Regardless, your complaint remains silly, by the virtue of the fact that the term is commonly used as I already explained it to you.

  • Uh Jonah Mussolini was a communist and a murderer, Fascism was a sSoivet front Benito was an agent of Socialism Internationale and murdered all legit political opposition not staged opposiition and was rabidly atheist, darwinist, andti-Catholic, homosexua and hated Jews, he just didn't wat to annihilate the whole race...He was the quiilant of Richard Daley on 1,000 megtons of Roids with a Communist background and a lust for a new "Roman empire" as he wanted to put it.

  • musolini was not a anti-semite but was a racist - he killed many blacks in ethopia for no reason.

  • Goldberg rocks.

  • He never says Americans can never be fascists... his whole book is about how it has happened and might happen again. He said we'd never have the racist genocide like in Germany. Also if you actually listen to him, he explains how the word "fascist" has nothing to do with genocide or atrocities. Those qualities have been attributed to the word by logical error. It would make just as much sense for "socialist" to carry the same stigma.

  • Dictionary definition of fascism; "a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism."

Please let's not try to redefine the term or couch it in double-speak. Perhaps Goldberg would like to comment on the loss of Habeas Corpus, singularly the biggest loss of American liberties in the history of the country.

  • You completely ignored what he said. Although Habeas Corpus is still intact, so that part of the argument is flawed anyway, a lack civil liberties has nothing to do with fascism. Regimented industry and commerce are goals of the Democratic party. If Bush is a fascist, why wasn't he suppressing opposition? Tons of people criticize him every day; why was the movie W allowed to be created? Democrats are the ones who side with things like the Fairness Doctrine.

  • That definition is wrong and needs to be updated. While fascism has all those qualities it differed from other brutal dicatorships that ruled by force. Fascism was a political cult movement within a government. It would be like if scientology formed a political party and got into office. That is what fascism really was.

  • Listen to the LIES coming out of his mouth!

First of all he defends fascism... his version of fascism talking about Italy is apparently more palatable to him. It's still evil under any flag or regime.

:And then .. he says Americans can never be fascists because it's against their DNA.

What a desperate lie.. what disinformation!

Beware of these quote unquote 'intellectuals'.

  • Did you watch the whole speech starting from the first video? Or understand the fact that "dna" was just a metaphor for deeply ingrained tenets of our culture? Or the only fascist that was 'supported' was Mussolini, even though all that was just a praise to historical Italian pride+culture?
