@AlaskanSky Dude that's the entire point of Theravada Buddhism, there really shouldn't be any new insights because the Buddah, before death, asked his followers to ask any questions if they did not understand anything, so that his teaching, perfected teaching, would be taught correctly, and not misinterpreted or changed. It's a noble truth because of the very fact that it does not change with interpretation but is instead realized in it's original form
Indeed......and of all the things to let go....love has got to be the hardest. But yes even love can lead to suffering as love is essentially attachment. And when the ones you love die you can fall into deep suffering because of it.
Watts to the rescue again! That's a great explanation for why teachers/teaching arise. For all those who think teachers are unnecessary listen to this vid carefully. The question and the teaching arise TOGETHER as ONE. The question IS the teaching. Samsara IS Nirvana.
Shit, I was looking forward to an insight to Geofrey Dahrma. Would have been far more interesting. The Dhali Lamma is part of the elite. Tibetan monks bully ordinary Tibetans mercilesly. Ghandi helped colonialism perfectly by convincing a population of millions to be so pacifistic it alowed a miniscule amount of British control them with ease and terror. I AM WHITE by the way. Just look without the rose-tinted glasses.
This has nothing directly to do with the Dalai Lama. If you disagree with the bullshit politics surrounding tibet and Dalai Lama, then you still can agree with this video. And IF you confuse buddhism with nihilism, then you can be said to be wrong. The opinion that no thing contains independent nature in and on itself is not nihilistic, but it IS NON-DUALISTIC, or to some extent holistic. The nature of every thing is non-local.
The buddhist philosophy is a non-dualistic one: the distinction between subject and object is said to be a deterrent in achieving enlightenment. The exact same thing applies in quantum mechanics: particles are waves are particles are waves of interconnected energy that is empty of inherent existence - they are not caused to exist by an external force, and they are not independent in any way or form.Quantum mechanics and buddhism, along with some other easterna, western mysticism is nondualistic.
Advaita Vedenta is another very popular non-dualistic school of mysticism.....which is what Watts is pointing to when he explains how hinduism contrasts with buddhism.
Dunno. natural human skepticism toward charlatans i suppose.
I think of what Alan Watts says as a good snxiety tool and maybe some mildly interesting ideas as well. But is it AMAZING CLEVER stuff? i dont think so. So thats what i meant by " is he a Fraud".
It has had a completely opposite effect on me! I surmise that you very much believe in a soul and a god as well. In my opinion, these two theoretical states/beings are very mysterious. Believing them without evidence is not what I would do.
To me this is a never ending merry-go-round as is this vid. I had an out of body experience when I was a kid. Horific car accident. I completely left my body and looked down at myself. Is that soul?? Something re-placed me back into my body. That in itself was an horendous feeling of shock and agony. Was that God?? So you see, I don't often enter into debate about two things that are very real to me.
I don't deny reincarnation or the longevity of consciousness and I think an out-of-body experience is a genuine experience that quite a lot people have claimed to experience AND be able to describe vivid details that end up being correct. However, that doesn't prove that consciousness is synonymous with a soul. Still, some people claim to experience these OBEs in a manner that is sleep-induced, and, again are able to remember correct details. Buddhism is actually just as open to it, as anything.

The nervous laughter when he mentioned "various boozes" made me blush. Poor Alan! Made God have mercy on his bright, misguided soul!

I think you misinterpreted, he was laughing about his unique "translation" of intoxication, as boozes! Ha Ha Ho Ho

Everything is holistic. I'm not sure I quite follow your comment. I stick to my comment. The Dahma bit was a joke. I will re-watch the video now.
