Canadian polymer clay artist Camille Allen has spent much time and effort to bust the urban legend that these are "marzipan babies." Both her site and snopes dot com, a site well known for busting urban legends, have pages that address who the artist is and what these hand sculpted art dolls are made out of -- polymer clay.

Camille Allen uses professional doll sculptors' clay, not the polymer clay kids often use (like Sculpey III, to use a commonly available example).
