@PeronMiles I'd check the connections again, and possibly try to read other DVDs (such as a DVD movie that you know works elsewhere). If the connections are OK and the PS3 fails to read DVDs after that, you should get the laser exchanged.
@PeronMiles If you do a clear disc check and see the red laser lighting up, it might be that you have to go into the Recovery Menu and perform the "Restore file system" and "Repair database" options. These won't destroy data on the hard drive, but be sure to have a backup just in case.
Sony took my 9th ps3 4 testing.This is second time they have left me ps3 less .

Those four clicking sounds is what i'm experiencing. The lens will bob up and down 4 times but not read the disc, therefore not starting up the motor. You say it's a faulty laser, and if so, should I buy a new laser or send it to sony b/c u said it's only a temporary fix?
@deadman80808 If it's in warranty, sending it back to Sony is the way to go. If it's out of warranty and you feel confident replacing the laser, save some money and swap it out. However, even though it costs roughly twice as much and you're without the PS3 for a number of weeks, there is some sort of warranty if you send it back to Sony for repair (I think it's like 90 days; not sure), so there is that to consider.

@junker15 Hi, what happens if your drive spins but still doesn't pick up games 90% of the time when it does everything is fine until I switch the console off. I have tried cleaning the lens with some surgical spirit but it hasn't made a difference. I'm so happy with the result of having my PS3 back, I just wanna help you guys. This is such a simple fix and should remain healthy for many more years after the laser deck replacement.
I fixed my Ps3 after the Blu-Ray drive failed. It works perfect now. Rather than replacing just the lens, you can buy the complete new laser deck on eBay for just £60. It is far easier to install and takes just 10 mins. The seller I bought mine from paid the shipping (within UK) and dispatched for next day delivery. Arrived in brand new condition and well packaged.

There may be ways to repair the assembly, but I would guess it would take special tools that aren't available to many people. I haven't seen anything on the web about repairing the laser itself.
Yeah, that's true, i haven't found anything too. But as a matter of fact, all the lasers being sold now are refurbished or repaired old lasers, because they are not being produced any more. You can find auctions on ebay, where you can send your broken one in and they send it back repaired to you. That's why i wondered, if i can't just repair it myself!

Hello. My PS3 had the YLOD just 2 weeks ago. Opened it up, heated the motherboard up and it works now BUT now the Blu-ray laser does not work. I have a 60GB bought aud 07. I opened up the bluray drive and I need a KEM-400AAA. You mentioned HyraTech and richspsxparts as companies that have them, but now they are sold out. Do you reccommend any other places to get the laser?
Unfortunately, HyraTech don't carry the parts anymore. I have updated the description of this video with a URL that does carry both the deck and the actual laser unit. Apparently, they're based in the eastern USA (they run in Eastern time, anyway).

You ruined the blu-rays disc detector. It's a little square box that lies ontop of the bluray player (underneath it's metal shell when you unscrew it)
Now since it doesn't know if a disc is in, it will try pull a disc in at start up anyways, but sony at the very last made it so that if that failed you could just use a bit of force to tell the motors there is a disc coming in... annoying but yeah.

Oh! This one's easy. The solution, if you haven't figured out on your own by now, is to put a flat-bladed screwdriver in the slot at the top-right, just to the left of the short screw. Push in slightly and pull up on the top cover.

No, actually your PS3 froze because the laser died while you were playing. Same thing happened to almost all of us (whose PS3 stopped reading discs).
Internet data is unreliable, every programmer and admin knows it - so games are made to withstand that unreliability. The chance for verizon to have broken your console is absolute zero, unless game developers and Sony actively made the game and console do that.

I was playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and the system froze for the first time ever. Anyways, I reset the PS3 and all was well again. I exited the game and then got the prompt to update to 2.53. Did that and well here we are.

I received the replacement lens hardware from HyraTech and installed it. It cured that PS3's woes. Works like a champ now!
My unit just died in operation. One moment, I could see the disc in the XMB; after the next disc swap, it would just sit there forever with the "disc loading" animation in the upper-right corner. It may be that yours is actually giving you some warning before going completely.

Hello. My PS3 had the YLOD just 2 weeks ago. Opened it up, heated the motherboard up and it works now BUT now the Blu-ray laser does not work. I have a 60GB bought aud 07. I opened up the bluray drive and I need a KEM-400AAA. You mentioned HyraTech and richspsxparts as companies that have them, but now they are sold out. Do you reccommend any other places to get the laser?

Unfortunately, HyraTech don't carry the parts anymore. I have updated the description of this video with a URL that does carry both the deck and the actual laser unit. Apparently, they're based in the eastern USA (they run in Eastern time, anyway).

You ruined the blu-rays disc detector. It's a little square box that lies ontop of the bluray player (underneath it's metal shell when you unscrew it)
Now since it doesn't know if a disc is in, it will try pull a disc in at start up anyways, but sony at the very last made it so that if that failed you could just use a bit of force to tell the motors there is a disc coming in... annoying but yeah.

after i took off the 7 screws that make the lid, i noticed the lid in the back right corner where there are 2 screws and one of them are the small screw... that corner wont raise up for some reason. what should i do without breaking the system?

Oh! This one's easy. The solution, if you haven't figured out on your own by now, is to put a flat-bladed screwdriver in the slot at the top-right, just to the left of the short screw. Push in slightly and pull up on the top cover.

Mine just suddenly stopped reading any discs. I had a Blu-Ray disc in, and when I ejected it to put a game in, the game wouldn't spin up. Then the disc that was working 2 seconds ago wouldn't work, either.
I tried all types of supported media; none were successfully recognized.

yep, i feel your pain. my ps3 was fine until verizon fios, my scumbag internet provider failed while i was in the middle of an online game.. it caused my ps3 to freeze, then when i put it back on, now it dont read games or movies, its fucking garbage and the scumbag cocksuckers at verizon say they are sorry but its not their fault. No, actually your PS3 froze because the laser died while you were playing. Same thing happened to almost all of us (whose PS3 stopped reading discs).
Internet data is unreliable, every programmer and admin knows it - so games are made to withstand that unreliability. The chance for verizon to have broken your console is absolute zero, unless game developers and Sony actively made the game and console do that.

What's the update on this? Did you ever get that replacement unit and if so, were you able to successfully install it?
My system stopped read discs the other night too.
I was playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and the system froze for the first time ever. Anyways, I reset the PS3 and all was well again. I exited the game and then got the prompt to update to 2.53. Did that and well here we are.
I'm sensing the blu-ray drive went to $hit like yours did. I have one on order. Should be here tomorrow

I received the replacement lens hardware from HyraTech and installed it. It cured that PS3's woes. Works like a champ now!
My unit just died in operation. One moment, I could see the disc in the XMB; after the next disc swap, it would just sit there forever with the "disc loading" animation in the upper-right corner. It may be that yours is actually giving you some warning before going completely.

Nope. The replacement laser unit was OK. It was my original that just gave up while I had the PS3 powered on.

I have played LittleBigPlanet and Ratchet & Clank Future after the swap. They both work fine.
You do not have to format the hard drive to make this work if the lens is the only part you replace.
