Man I loved this game. My dad had an "rapidfire" adapter to hook up to the joystick port on the amiga, you could turn the dial to set the fire rate!!!! Loved this game! and of course, at 12 years old beat it.
@meowmmmmm You are probably right ;) I had the game on the Amiga but a few months before i got my Amiga i remember seeing a review of the game in C&VG for the ST and i came EXTREMELY close to getting an ST because of it and some other titles like Chambers of Shaolin, but then a friend of mine bought an Amiga and once i saw it running i forgot about getting an ST.
All this talk about autofire... All the joysticks I had for both the Commodore 64 and subsequently Amiga 600/1200 all had an autofire on them anyway. Never felt like cheating to me. Can't see the fuss myself. Especailly as with autofire I still had my arse handed to me on regular occasions with this damned game!
@Einherj3r Auto fire isn't a bad thing to do. All the Quickshots had Autofire. Don't you like Quickshots or something? Are you there? The Quickshots. Do you remember the Quickshots? They had auto fire. Are you there?
@nicholasthetaylor I don't know what you mean by Quickshots. Autofire turns the bosses and some other (normally hard) passages into something arbitrary and makes the video a bit boring to watch. If you're using safestates anyway why would you mind if the game isnt mindnumbingly easy?
@Einherj3r Quickshot made really awesome joysticks back in the day. I can't speak for the whole wide world, but everyone I knew with Amigas and C64s had them. Getting a player to repeatedly press a button is sick. Why would you want someone to develop arthritis during their chill-out time playing your game? Auto-fire is a great thing.
I wouldn't mind the autofire trainer, if it weren't for the fact the player misses most of the cash, and clearly needed that trainer to survive. It's a good game, but, as much as I hate to say this, this isn't a good LP.
06:38 WTF is that thing? A giant shrimp? Good boss design. But why do they explode into bubbles?! HA! Reminds me of the death scene in C64's Hysteria.
Oh, surprise surprise, no sodding end screen/sequence.
I thought there was no rules to longplay. Speedplay I can see the need for rules, but I thought longplay was only meant to show the game and could be tool assisted to no end just to fulfill that.
But I agree that a non-autofire-game would look. and most definitely sound, a lot better.
How is it that my memory recalls the starting screen song sounding differently from this one? It was more faithful to the original Megablast song ('Bomb the Bass'). Overally, I think you should have uploaded some more 'comprehensive' longplay of this game, which featured the Bitmap Brothers logo at the start, for example. Also, for a game so closely tied to its graphics and sound, a better general quality of the longplay would be more appropriate (same thing applies for SotB longplay, actually).
Except the in-game music, this game remains a rotten Atari ST conversion. 16 colours and the game does not access the blitter, sprite and scrolling registers at all. Like most early Bitmap Brothers games, could have been done a lot better on the Amiga.
I'm afraid I don't speak Italian. I can only say again that Xenon 2 was primarily developed for the ST, and that the Amiga version is basically the same. Except for the better sound, there is NOTHING in that game which makes use of the Amiga hardware. Although the graphics look great, they are still only 16 colours.
@porcorosso81 Sorry, your nickname let me suppose you were italian. Anyway, it seems quite strange to me that the original Atari version could match the graphics of the Amiga one. Unfortunately I've not been able to find any vid of it for me to compare :(
Well, as long as the graphics are 16 colours, games can look the same on both machines. The Xenon 2 palette basically consists of 8 colours gray/blue and 8 colours yellow/golden, making it 16 colours. On the Amiga, the game could at least run much smoother using the Blitter. The way the game runs now, the CPU is drawing all the graphics, which is necessary on the Atari ST, but a HUGE WASTE on the Amiga.
Nope, it doesn't use the blitter, which can be easily checked using WinUAE. Activate the WinUAE debugger, and log writes to the BLTSIZ register (the only way to start the blitter on OCS). WinUAE won't interrupt during the whole game, because it NEVER touches the blitter.
It is a straight Atari ST port, the Amiga executing almost the same code. Only the sound is Amiga specific.
@porcorosso81 Alas the FACTS are that it does use the blitter.
Download the Vision Factory (any version really) 1 disk version and do a break point on any of the following memory addresses whilst the game is playing.
I could go on, but I trust i've made my point. Don't get me wrong, it could have been so much better, but the fact is, the blitter is used in the game.
Oh man i used to play this with a friend all the time. One of us steered the ship and the other one went crazy on the firebutton. To see this with autofire...*faints*
The music from this game is one of my favourite tracks of all time. Its actually a remix of "John Carpenter - The End". Yes, thats right, the guy who directed Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing made it on a synth in the early 80's. Its absolutely banging.
Uh, the song's name is "Megablast (Hip Hop On Precinct 13)" by Bomb the Bass, I'm listening to it as I type. You can find an upload of that song here in YouTube. :)
Yes, but my point is that its a remix of the original theme tune from Assault on Precinct 13 (1976 movie). John Carpenter later went on to make a club version called 'The End' in 1983. Then Bomb the Bass remixed a version from that. The End is the best version in my opinion
i fucking love this game used to play it all the time they should remake this or keep it the same but release it for all the new consoles. I forgot what this game was called thanks to you i now know.
I can't believe there's so much conversation versus autofire, I appreciate your work guys... videos like these help me to enjoy past memories... and, by the way, all joysticks from 1985 got an autofire switch.. it's just part of my memories! :-D I'd like to have autofire on morning traffic jams, while I go to work... and Xenon 2 Megablast song theme would just help!
Autofire isn't cheating cubex55, you're just utilising a tool available on your controller. I don't think a pianist is cheating if he uses the sustain pedal to make the notes hang. Great vid. Took me right back :)
XENOOOOON!!! haahahah... I was trying to reach level 4 for a decade. After that, years pasted, I found the real cheats (something with f11 or smthing) and I unlocked all upgrades... What a game.. This, after Tyrian... Is there any other that Ive missed? Or any new? I also wonder if there is any scroll game creator to create my own!
No its not, there were Joysticks and Pads that had autofire option. At no point the game rules are modified, and because of that its not considered a cheat!
Ok, just to make this clear, we create longplays - we set the rules on what is cheating within longplays and what is not - and we say Autofire is not cheating as its possible for a human to press similar fast with enough training.
Additionally, Autofire does not modify anything within the game, hence it is not a cheat. If you have a problem accepting this, and continue insisting that you are right, then we have no other choice but to block you.
When you watch a football game with your friends and the ball-holder gets tackled would you jump up and scream: OMG CHEATER! because you consider tackling as cheating? No, of course you wouldnt do that, as the rules of football state that this is allowed - but then i wonder why are you doing exactly that right now!
Football is an established sport with a set of written rules. What you are doing is setting up your own rules and expecting me to respect them, even though you have done nothing to earn your position as the rule maker.
You are quite entitled to justify your tactics however you wish, just as I am able to say that I consider using autofire to be cheating. The fact that you dont like me saying it is a matter of supreme indifference to me.
We have been doing Longplays with this ruleset since 2005, and all the 1000+ videos that were submit to us adhere to them - which means the rules are established and valid!
If you dont like that, feel free to set up your own website, post your own videos and make up your own rules.
Bt if you continue to insist that your opinion is correct eventho our rules clearly state the opposite, it only makes you look like a fool!
Sorry, but this has nothing to do with 'your' rules, opinion is not bounded by rules. These games are not yours so you don't get to make the rules.
'We have been doing Longplays with this ruleset since 2005, and all the 1000+ videos that were submit to us adhere to them - which means the rules are established and valid!'
@MsRonin1978 yeah a REAL challenge would be to just not touch some of the higher-priced items in the shop and fly your way thru with a basic setup!! I bet someone has even done this before...moreover its also a better idea if you want to see all the graphic sprites. With the full-tooled up rig on level 4 and 5, you only see a flying ever-shooting fortress blasting its way through the level, but you cannot make out distinct things....
This game was no way near as hard as the original Xenon.
I remember buying the Bitmap Bros Shades from the shop and it did nothing but tint the screen for a while which was such a waste of money as they were really expensive.
awesome upload! one of my fav-games of my youth... i loved the game.. i loved the soundtrack. they dont makes games like these anymore.. and thats a pity!!
This was the first game I ever completed & I was highest scorer on C&VG list of top scores in their magazine with about 10,000,000 in early 90's, as you can hitch yourself on scenery on one level & destroy enemies forever. I left it for hours to clock up huge score. Seems silly now but great at the time. so excited to get past mothership at end i had to phone everyone ! lol
Xenon 2 wasn't hard by any means, even without that insane autofire. Actually it was more on the easy side. What's his problem with the bosses btw ? Dense or delaying the kill on purpose ?
Why would you use Autofire? 50% of the fun in the game is tapping space like crazy when you have a good shot. Haha, and even in newbie-mode, you still lose some lifes. In my PC version, they cut the ending completely out. The game just restarted. I was so disappointed.. But the rest of the game is epic.
LOL! For a moment there I thought it said 'Insert Game Dish', bringing to mind some surreal parallel reality in which program data is encoded on the surface of eating utensils.
Shame there wasn't a Xenon 3. Two things I didn't like, the repetitive music and everything slowing down. I think The Brothers should have deliberately made things a bit jerkier, to keep the pace up.
@thygrrr I agree the ending makes you think there was not enough room on the disk for a decent one ... [Ed: might even be the truth, since the awesome intro score ate up a LOT from the floppy disk space]
Holy shit, I can't believe I watched the entire 46+ minutes thing, this game is pure EVIL! I don't see anyone finishing Xenon 2 without a little help of auto-fire and saved states anytime soon, you guys rock! I remember playing Xenon 2 on my PC back in the days, with its inferior graphics and beeps coming out from the internal speaker, and playing with the keyboard; I can't believe I made it to the second level using that configuration!
This game has my word of being one of the most insanely difficult vertical shooters of all time, and I've played quite a few. Some enemies can even pass through a straight "line" of bullets and at some times the bulk of enemies is just overwhelming.
I couldn't help but laugh at the lame ending. I mean, going through all that pain just to be ditched out like a hooker the morning after!
These were the kind of things that made this game lovely. The music by "Bomb The Bass" was just awesome!
Used to love this game!! The assault on precinct 13 soundtrack, feckin great stuff

@porcorosso81 You're right about the scrolling and the sprites, but it does in fact use the blitter.

Ha!
If you played it right, by the end of the game Super Nashwan Power was a downgrade :D

you spoilt all the fun with the autofire...
i remember playing this game on my pc in the early 90's. it was one of my all time fav!
i memorized all the enemies move and where they came out.
i loved how there were always new weapons at the store and how they built up on your ship!

Xenon 2 wasn't hard by any means, even without that insane autofire. Actually it was more on the easy side. What's his problem with the bosses btw ? Dense or delaying the kill on purpose ?
Awesome game nontheless.

Tsssss..... ending was a complete LET-DOWN! But the gameplay was 6 thumbs up! (ok, 2!)

Shame there wasn't a Xenon 3. Two things I didn't like, the repetitive music and everything slowing down. I think The Brothers should have deliberately made things a bit jerkier, to keep the pace up.
BurtWilson1 3 years ago
Bitmaps Brothers didn´t use the Amiga chipset very well (or at all?). ST version is equally fast :(
And it is only 16 colors on screen.
Ahle2 3 years ago
isn't autofire cheating? i wouldn't use it myself.
dariusb23 3 years ago
Wow that's the SUCKIEST Ending for one of the AWESOMEST games ever.
Lol. I'm glad I didn't solve it myself. I would have thrown my Amiga out of the window.
thygrrr 3 years ago
@thygrrr I agree the ending makes you think there was not enough room on the disk for a decent one ... [Ed: might even be the truth, since the awesome intro score ate up a LOT from the floppy disk space]
pianoman74 1 year ago
This is the trained one disk version... it's missing a bit of stuff.
The original has a short "intro", since Bomb The Bass / Megablast was the officially licensed title song and stuff.
thygrrr 3 years ago
That ending SUCKED.

Funny thing is, I just remember the Amiga fair in Cologne/Germany, where there was a competition - You vs. The Bitmap Brothers!!!
Yes, they were there, and they were promoting Xenon 2. And my mate played and won against one of them, can't remember his name, what a shame.
The prize was a Xenon 2 basecap, don't know if he still worships it ;-)

Holy shit, I can't believe I watched the entire 46+ minutes thing, this game is pure EVIL! I don't see anyone finishing Xenon 2 without a little help of auto-fire and saved states anytime soon, you guys rock! I remember playing Xenon 2 on my PC back in the days, with its inferior graphics and beeps coming out from the internal speaker, and playing with the keyboard; I can't believe I made it to the second level using that configuration!
Bejoule 3 years ago
This game has my word of being one of the most insanely difficult vertical shooters of all time, and I've played quite a few. Some enemies can even pass through a straight "line" of bullets and at some times the bulk of enemies is just overwhelming.
I couldn't help but laugh at the lame ending. I mean, going through all that pain just to be ditched out like a hooker the morning after!
These were the kind of things that made this game lovely. The music by "Bomb The Bass" was just awesome!
Bejoule 3 years ago
Lovely graphics, but this wasn't actually programmed by the Bitmaps was it?
retronostalgic 3 years ago
Never finished it. It was so f-ing hard!

Auto fire is fucking cheating!!

7 thumbs down ?! IT IS cheating! FTW
dnlxl 3 years ago
True...where's the fun in that,
almost the same as watching a video with
your finger on the fire button,in this case
it was the only way to finnish it.
PAULLONDEN 3 years ago
A superb game in it's day but that music grated. I just wish The Bitmaps were still producing today.
cyrilfuckdust 4 years ago
I wish they would release this on Xbox live. This was one of my favorite games.

Boy, that looks great, even by today's standard. Bitmap Brothers were the masters of graphical art.

Title of movie: Amiga Longplay [127] Xenon 2 - Megablast
Popcornsong 4 years ago
This game had only 16 colors, which is what the ST could handle.
A game that was designed specifically for the Amiga could use a much wider color palette.

Autofire is for noobs ;O. I can tap 10 times / second for a long time. 129 mouseclicks / 10sec is my record.
