@bikeguykhi I haven't heard this version before but it's called "Sally's Song" from Tim Burtons "nightmare before christmas". Catherine O'Hara sang it in the movie but I have no idea who this is.
If it helps, the original plan for the shows conclusion (had it gone on JUST a BIT longer, according to the original writers), was they ended up in the Far East, he finally realized how much she meant to him, and they fall in love. Further, she cures him, and they do, truly, live happily ever after. I draw some comfort from that. :)
Poor Julia. Barnabas had crushes on so many other women: Josette, Victoria Winters, Maggie Evans, Haley Stokes, even Angelique at one point. But Julia was the only one truly devoted to him.
Intellectually, I can see why people were on team Julia/Barnabas. But emotionally, I always wanted Barnabas to have his Josette. He won me over with his agony, plus, I loved how the show used that relationship, and the music box, time and time again throughout several stories.
I love Barnabas and Julia together...I love how they are always investigating things together and trying to solve collinwood goings on...I love how at collinwood they would always be up at like 3 or 4 am together...Julia loved him sooo much..she helped him with whatever he needed..I am a huge fan..I have every episode ..and have watched it tons of times..I love 1897,1968,PT, and well all of DS ..every episode..LOL
You know that Barnabas and Julia do get married at the very end of the series, but they don't show it on the series. I think they talk about it on Dark Shadows Special Edition DVD.
It was in the show's story bible, which headwriter Sam Hall condensed in a TV Guide article after the show was canceled a little sooner than was expected. The final Barnabas and Julia storyline was to take them to Singapore where they would marry and decide to stay. The TV Guide article is included in the DS Special Edition DVD, narrated by Roger Davis.
Julia was in love with Barnabas which is why she was so devotede to him! Barnabas was in love with Josette, then Maggie and even Carolyn at one point was under his spell.
This is really nice. Its nice to see Grayson so appreciated. For me she become the heart of DS and the driver of most of the story lines. The one with the inside scoop. Thanks for making this. I love your other DS stuff too. You are very talented
Terrific video. Love the clips. When I watched the show as a child, I was on Team Julia, and seeing the DVDs again after all these years has only reinforced my opinion that Barnabas and Julia rocked! Frankly, all those twits he was constantly becoming infatuated with were annoying.
And Barnabas did set the stage for the RELUCTANT vampire to come onto the scene. Up until him they were just bloodthirsty villians. Anne Rice watched DS and their is a DS storyline in PT that is very similiar to Interview!
If you read Graysons audio Biography you would know HENDO56 that Julia was not killed of because her character became too popular. This is a fact also stated in The Dark Shadows Companion! It's fact and not plot device!
Love the video and song! I think the only way the writers and producers of the show could have broke out of the same old tired plot formula was to have Barnabas finally realize his love for Julia. Too bad the plot outlines described in the TV Guide article from 1971 never had the chance to make it onto the show.
When did Barnabas ever go after anyone who wasn't less than half his age? Josette, Maggie, Victoria, Roxanne- not a one over 27 to Barnabas's 45. A Barnabas-Julia romance would never happen.
Well, as much as I loved DS, consistency wasn't always a strong point. I think Julia cured him in one story line. Then Angelique lifted the curse in the 1849 story line. Which then should have totally erased the whole Barnabas-chained-in-his-coffin until 1966 storyline. Meaning the 1960s Collins Family should not recognize him because he was never set free, and oh, I think I need one of Julia's sedatives!
Barnabas was well over 200. Julia was 1/4 of his age. lol
Seriously, I hate to tell you this but the "future plan" as published in TV Guide and written by the two head writers was to bring Barney and Julie together in Singapore. So apparently Barney got over his adolescent fixation. lol
I know. I actually saved that TV Guide when it was published, and still have it today. It was written by Sam Hall. It also had Adam and Carolyn getting together. Course considering Sam Hall was married to Grayson Hall, he might have been prejudiced in having "Barney" and Julia get together. :)
The article was by Sam but the storyline had been drawn up by Sam and Gordon. As far as Sam Hall's "prejudice", I'm sorry to tell you that Sam had absolutely no say in the course of the storyline (he or Gordon). The network, at that point, was heavily influencing the story and Dan Curtis was always absolute captain of his boat. No one shared the helm. The reason Barnabas and Julia were the center of the show is that the audience loved them.
The article that put Barnabas and Julia together was written after the show was off the air. I seriously doubt by that time Dan Curtis told Sam what to write. Also Sam qualified that article by saying it's what "could have" happened. The reason Barnabas and Julia were the center is because it's a time honored plot device. Two anti-heros working together to save the Collins family from supernatural forces. Don't forget, Julia Hoffman was supposed to be "Julian"- but for a typo, there went Julia!
The article that was written was based on the story outline that Sam and Gordon had sketched out (with DC's oversight). Sam told me that himself. The reason Barnabas and Julia were the center of the show is because the audience liked it that way -- plot device or no. Yes, Julia was supposed to be Julian but then Barnabas and Julia were both supposed to die within weeks of their first appearances. The plot changes in response to viewer interest.
Actually, the plot changes were due to the fact that Jonathan Frid was capturing audience interest. That's why Barnabas wasn't killed off. Julia, although a typo created character, came in handy in making him a "good" character- defender of the Collins Family- which is easier to write about than having him kill them off, ala "House of Dark Shadows". From the article- "these are MERELY signposts pointing a direction the characters MIGHT have gone". Might have gone. Merely signposts.
No, Julia was very popular with the audience. You may not want to accept that but it is a matter of record. And if you need to see the show another way, by all means do so. I don't think it's correct however to misrepresent fact and slight performers (or their spouses) in order to bolster your opinion. I co-wrote a book on Dark Shadows that was published by Kathryn Scott's company. I've been through tons of interviews and boxes of information. I speak from a position of knowledge.
It's not about my accepting it- I simply doubt your belief that it's a matter of record. As I said, Julia was a plot device- created to interact with Barnabas. Later she proved handy because Barnabas could talk things out with her (saves on doing thinking voice-overs). Also everytime Barnabas fell in love with some new under-30 woman, she was the 3rd point of the triangle. Makes good drama. While I'm sure she had her fans, I doubt your assertion that Julia was "very" popular with the audience.
Believe whatever you like. It's a matter of record and remains the fact. I've done the research. I've now been kept here repeatedly over two days trying to explain history to someone who doesn't want to believe it exists. And why you are preaching this on a forum (while insulting Grayson and Sam) filled with Julia fans, I'm not certain. In any event, it's useless trying to talk sense with the converted. lol Have a nice life.
Actually, I'm not insulting Grayson (who was nominated for an Academy Award for "Night of the Iguana" I believe) or Sam. I'm just saying that you're mistaken to think that Julia was more popular with the audiences than any of the other supporting cast. That it is not on record- we've only got your say-so. I saw Frid and Selby on tour- never Grayson. I've already proved you wrong with that TV Guide article ("merely signposts"). I see it's useless trying to talk sense with the biased. Smile! :D
I love this vid.. watch it at least once a week. I loved those characters so much, and this is a great tribute to both Grayson Hall and Jonathan Frid. Thanks.
You know, Sam Hall, one of the writers of Dark Shadows, published an article in TV Guide that said that Barnabas and Julia did indeed get married. They left Collinwood for Singapore and there they wed. So our couple did indeed find some happiness together^^ Rest in peace, Grayson Hall...You were the only Julia Hoffman..
Just an observation: Have you ever noticed the amazing amount of sedatives she gave out? I guess in the Collins household, and the people in Collinsport for that matter, needed them. If you get a chance to go through all of these episodes, take count of how many times Dr. Hoffman handed out sedatives. Thinking about it now, she never took any herself, and being around Barnabas in the beginning, you would think that she would use them too

And Julia may not have been a conventional cookie cutter beauty, but she was far drom ugly.

I can hardly bear the thought of Barnabas ending up with Julia. She was so ugly and strange. Not up to his elegance and class.
