Well, ladies and gents with all respect to everyone in the forum. I am from Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan and the moves can be identifed with some of our bunkai and kobudo. However, the one comment concerning making a traditional art into a "Sport Art" aggrevates me to the max! I have never seen Aikido done like this before, just saying..Oss
i have to say these its very diferent to the aikido i know, personaly i dont like it, i dont see here what i was looking for in aikido when i started.
but it is aikido. just whant to say to the ppl who say these its not aikido, well, its prety aiki to me, a diferent path, but there must be a path, remember aikido its a complex word not just a random martial art name that sounds cool and these martial art its the evidence.
Aikido simply means "the Way of harmonious spirit." So, yeah. I see the tenkan movement and all that but.... I just gotta say..... *Sigh.....Boring film. I know it's just a trailer, but...Looks boring. I study Aikido and It's not this style, but it's all good. Shihan Steven Seagal Sensei would tell anyone who asks simply that he practices and teaches aikido...that, "Aikido is aikido."
This trailer is about "doku"-do. The person on the trailer -- who hovewer seems to be highly skilled in his techniques -- never speaks about the concept of the "other" with who you practice and jointly gain experience and broaden your own scope of techniques.
I agree 100%. This video is not Aikido... without a training partner the movements are meaningless and are rather dull to watch, not to mention hard to decrypt by non-Aikido audience.
I think you should see the whole film rather than comment on a trailer.
In the Shodokan system we have a structured system of basic practice exercises, the first ones are performed without a partner but by the whole class simultaniously.
But why can you not practice weapons by one's self? Just bokken cuts to strengthen wrists and relax sholders? Or practive the jo kata by ones self. That one i like for movement and fitness.
hi, im interested in learning aikido. but im finding it hard to identify different types of aikido and what to expect from them. is is as varied as the different styles of Karate (shotokan, okinawan, kyokushin, kenpo) or is it pretty much like Judo where it's just one main style - Kodokan; but some people name their aikido differently based on their ryu, as with the old jujitsu schools? so far, ive heard of daito ryu aikido and just recently discovered Shodokan...
I believe that these individual movements were developed by Tomiki while he was in a prison in Siberia after WWII. It's hard to practice the essence of Aikido without a partner! As a result, he developed series of movements to help him stay sharp and work on the basics. This won't replace working with a partner, but it CAN complement it!
Those are two pronounciations of the same word, my friend. When one writes a Kanji, there is no alphabet to it, so if one says 'shotokan' rather quickly, it could be interpreted as 'shodokan'.
Thats one point of view... Remember not all Aikido scools are built by HIPPIES, Some of us do everything O-sensei passed on, within the guides of the founder (Tomiki Sensei) of our direction of this art. Are you not aware of all the trials and tribulations that even O-sensei had.. Those are competitions with a higher cost. Live A Little sometime you might find that you enjoy it.
Death isn't nearly the worst thing that can happen to a person... Think of a horse... When a horse breaks it's leg, it is sacrificed. Because it goes into agony. From some level of physical degradation on death is a bliss.
Sorry about the slow reply. Scott teaches in Sheffield pretty much every day, and he's often available for private tuition in his new dojo. (Just around the corner from the one in the film, which sadly is being demolished now.)
Good stuff. Just a tip... If you do vocal work make sure to get a couple minutes of white noise from the room you are working in (every room has its own unique white sound ya know), that way you can edit the noise in for fade in/out for the short vocal cuts. Gives it a smoother feel to the audio. Cinematography and all the rest was spot on.
sorry you dont like gaps. Seems it wasn't the intention to have back to back naration, but instead let some of the images speak for themselves and contribute along side the naration for overall effect. Just a thought.
I love Aikido, but I was miffed at the bad sound production and bad rip. I of course wish the filmmakers success and hope the finished film will be a lot better, as well as showing more interesting techniques in an engaging way.
Some of this may have been the conversion to WMV, and some the upload perhaps. But as the director created the file i presume he was happy enough with it before it was uploaded on the the interent (it was on a different site first), i dont get any probs with the sound but i'll see if there is anything i can do should there be more comments. I'm still waiting to hear info about the release of the actual art film itself...
Good trailer, I am looking forward to the film. Yes, Budo is life time study and practise. Shodokan Aikido is an application side of Aikido i.e. more realistic. Good to involve in it

shotokan aikido is NOT aikido , why do they call it ai-ki-do
if it had the DO of Osensei it would not be any competition..

true, "shotokan", is not the aikido. It's not my typo up in the title. This competition thing gets a little tired.
kipple2020 4 years ago
@Aur0rah I agree with you. This is not Aikido. I hate it when they turn an MA into a sport just ruin the true art.
