  • Karen has the voice of an angel!!! Ooooooooh Karen I love you .............

  • Celtic music performed at the very highest of musical standards, thank you Karen for all the years of pleasure you've brought to me and music lovers everywhere.

I see some rappers have visited, maybe when they're in need of being truly uplifted they will return and let real folk music enter their souls.

  • Lovely song and singer.

  • Haunting...definitlely......

  • One of my favorite gaelic songs!

  • brill

    what a voice

  • brill

  • Haunting...definitlely...

  • What a gift! Karen takes my soul to the rafters in such a beautiful way!

  • Admirable Karen Matheson ! Quelle expressivité, quels sentiments ! Bravo et merci

  • It is of course "Iain Ghlinn Chuaich" (not _C_hlinn). ( < "gleann" )

  • I freaking love Scotland and can't wait to go back!!

  • Like this guy with the sqeez box - I`

ll lie in front of her ..........

  • That´s why I love Caerceily!

  • I´s hard to write a comment because - tears are in my eyes!

  • Oh, for a voice like Karen Matheson; she doesn't have to strain her voice or sing loudly; she could sing in a whisper without any loss of quality. I've heard her sing this lovely lament over the years but this version is the most poignant - the story is of a jilted lover - not good enough for her man, she thinks, but wishes him well even though suspecting she expects his child. The Highland tradition of forgiveness.

  • What is it about scots gaeilge and female singers?

Bought Karen Matheson 's Down River last year ,

the passion, the feeling in the delivery of the songs ....fantastic

    An teanga is fearr...

  • Hi guys love both scots n irish (and of course a dram sometimes ! ) Karen has a great voice and the unique charm of scottish women, I wish ,etc...

thanks for this intimate set (we're almost in the room ! )

  • So beautiful. It makes me proud to be of Scottish descent. It's my dream to visit one day.

  • If I see ye the dram is on me !!

  • Haha! Thanks, I look forward to it. lol

  • Extraordinaire ! Quel enchantement, quel émotion dans cette voix de Karen Matheson. Et le gaélique, dans sa bouche, devient une langue tellement vivante.

  • Don't worry !!! I understood,my inglish isn't better than your spanish; sorry ! some of us don't understand the difference between both ,irish music 'nd scottish one , because the woole brithish land is maravellous, including Scottland and Ireland, and theirs traditional music, God Blessyou!!!

  • There is no major difference between irish and scottish they are the same people

  • I'm Irish but I have fallen in love with this Scottish girl - With a voice like that I'd fall at her feet

  • La musica country irlandesa es una de las mas bellas del mundo;solamente que parecen todas iguales sobre todo las voces femeninas. One of the most beautiful kind of music arround the world but they all seem a copy one another.specially femmale voices.

  • Ok. But this singer is singing in the language of Escocia. So, I think you mean La musica country Escoces here!

  • es escocia, no es iralndesa.

God, my Spanish is crap 0_0

  • What a beautiful singer and beautiful song!

  • Haunting and exquisitely poignant....it brings tears to my soul with it's eloquent sadness....

  • Gracias, Karen por tanta belleza que llega al corazón de las personas que aman la musica.

  • Ten!!!!!!!!!!

  • pure yearning from the heart's deepest chamber

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You; the selkie within is no longer weeping...

  • Very moving.

  • .........I cccccould cry!!!! Please a whiskey!!!

  • The voice of angels blowing in a warm summer breeze from the mountain summits of heaven.....could not light a candle to the beauty that is the voice of Karen Mathieson!

  • nor would a bonfire douse the gentle brilliance that sustains these fine musicians...so exquisite! My first listen to Karen, my heart has a home in her luminescent lyricism.

  • @Abbaodin :)

  • such beautiful sadness

  • Yes, yes Karen......Italian kiss!!!!!!!!

  • Karen Matheson est probablement l'une des plus prestigieuses représentantes de la Musique Celtique. On ne se lasse pas de l'écouter.

  • You are completely correct! Encore!

  • Elle est belle.

  • Karen's one of the few singers that brings a lump to my throat every times she sings.

  • Alot of deep conversation in these comments.I must say this woman has a beautiful voice and that's all matters to me.

  • The more I listen to her, the more I realize that Karen Matheson is the Johnny Cash of contemporary Celtic music. Through her music she can weave a story like no other.

  • amadan

  • this music is directly linked to American music thats why

  • That's a very shallow answer to a very deeply felt resonance. I'm not fond of American music but I'm crazy with Celtic music, the same goes for many people all over Europe. Fact is that many of us have Celtic ancestors from pre-roman times, Celts were living from my country Holland, WALlonia (Belgium), WALes, down GALlia (france), GAlicia (spain), portuGAL, up to WALlis (Austria), GALicia (poland, belorussia), down to WALachia (rumania).Even in turkey, hence the footbalclub GALataserai...

  • It is a shallow answer, but not a wrong one. But I think the reason celtic music touches the soul is because of its beauty and its realness. There is nothing contrived or shallow about this lovely, expressive music. The best thing to do is enjoy it.

  • Absolutely right, thnxs! I just bite a bit too quickly lately... :-) It is amazing to see how people from all over the world from every descent feel deeply touched and moved by this music... a smile with a tear...

  • American music has evolved from the immigrants who established the America we know now.....i.e. the Scots, English and Irish.

Celtic music is real and true and honest!

There is nothing false or fabricated about it's existence....music in it's truest form - that is Celtic music.....and Karen Mathieson is it's best songstress and practictioner of it's art!!!

  • She sings this like a Prayer-with eyes closed and speaking from the heart! Genuine and true. She makes me feel the same feelings!

  • this is sooo beautiful! This is the first time I hear her (I'm from hungary) but her voice is amazing, and the language is just beautiful! Can anybody tell me what the song is about?

  • It's a sad song in which the singer first tells of the physical perfection of her lover, John of Glen Chuaich, but then wonders why he has left her after declaring he would love her forever. You can easily find the Gaelic (Erse?) lyrics and an English translation on the 'net; just search the title "Iain Ghlinn Chuaich."

  • thanks! :)

  • This is the Gaelic. From Scotland. "Erse" is actually Irish.

  • Thanks for the info. I love Celtic music, but don't know the various dialects/languages (I'm just an Anglo-Saxon from Texas :)). I've been listening to Alan Stivell lately, and his language (Breton, I think) sounds different than Capercaillie's of Scotland or Clannad's of Ireland. Anyway, thanks. And thanks to Nameinamillion for posting this fine video.

  • Yes Alan Stivell is Breton and Breton is a sister language to Welsh and Cornish which are Brythonic (P -Celitc) languages. Irish and Scots Gaelic and Manx belong to the Goideilic (Q-Celtic) branch.

  • i love karen matheson

she has the voice of an angel

  • Tapadh leibh/ Go raibh maith agat!

  • Go raibh maith agat - thankyou.

  • I am almost numb - this kind of stuff goes right thru me. It squeezes my heart and brings tears to my eyes (but it feels so good) Thanks for posting (I've never heard of Karen Matheson - but she is obviously one of the angels...) WoW.

  • Hi nnekase, I know exactly what you mean... same here! shivering nerves, trembling heart, goes right to the marrow of my bones!

Did you hear oran dhomnaill Phadraig from Kathleen MacInnes (here on youtube)? Celtic Spirit for ever! (I'm from Holland)

  • Thank-You everheart66, I looked up the link you recommended by Kathleen MacInnes. I love it! It fits perfectly with the Karen Matheson piece. I'm an American, and I don't know why, but this music touches my soul! : ) Cheers friends! yes, Celtic Spirit Forever!

  • I'm an American, but hearing this wonderful song sung by this woman with an Angel's voice, I feel like I must have been Celtic for a thousand years. Touches my soul, it does. -Brian

  • a bheil duine sam bith eile dhen bharail gum bu choir do chuideigin rudeigin nas sporsaile a dheanamh 'sa Ghaidhlig?

  • tha mise. cà' bheil an reggae gàidhlig?

  • Lovely voice!

  • Living on the west coast of America, Karen is my hear, my connection, to the past, to my self, of old, thank you CaperCailie for what you do, for nobody does it better, you are the soul of Gaelic today. Love you forever. Richard a MacKai

  • Well put Richard... When I move to Scotland from the east coast of the US, I intend to see Capercaillie as often as possible... NOBODY does it better!

  • I`m told the "Alpha Scot", Sean Connery, said Karen Matheson; "Has a throat touched by God."

No argument from the likes of me. Beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • "Alpha Scot" Shhhean Canary , my arse.

He's about as Scottish as the Eifel tower.

  • I didn`t come up with the nickname, although I think he was born in Glasgow. (It`s "Eiffel", by the way...)

  • I'm sure you didn't but Shhhir Shhhean Canary was born in Edinburgh .

Re Eiffel , it's late in the day but I'm sure you understtod where I was coming from.

  • Right you are Brian but last time I was there Edinburgh was in Scotland....Nonetheless, I take your point and, assuming you`re posting this from Scotland it`s late in the day indeed, as in 3:35AM and I did indeed "understtod" ("understtnd"?) where you`re coming from...

    No offense.

    Cheers,

    Pete Huey

  • None taken , Pete.

    Good pickin'.

  • O Iain Ghlinn' Cuaich

Fear do choltais cha dual da fàs

    Cùl bachlach nan dual

'S e gu camlubach suas gu bhàrr

'S i do phearsa dheas ghrinn

A dh'fhàg mi cho tinn le gràdh

'S nach 'eil cron ort ri inns'

O mhullach do chinn gu d'sàil

  • Thank you so much.

  • Could anyone possibly provide us with the lyrics, and perhaps even a translation?

  • Could someone provide us with the lyrics and, perhaps even, a translation?

    Would so greatly appreciate it.

  • utterly beautiful

  • One of my favorite Capercaillie's song/

    Thanks a lot for uploading.

  • Karen is simply the best.

  • It's a beautiful song, and Scotland is beautiful....

  • As Welsh being my first language, I am always pleased to hear the native tongues of Britain still being spoken, and of course, sung!
