Two big mistakes : you underestimated the speed and power of a propellor. You were rushing, careless and....well, the rest is history.

Second, there were two little kids standing way too close to the airplane, while you were revving the engine. Sometimes ( it very rarely happens but it DOES happen, I have seen it myself) a propellor fails and parts fly off. The speeds are such that whenever that part hits a living creature, severe damage may occur. A child may lose an eye or get "stabbed".

He knows by now - but I am a father too... GET THE KIDS BACK YA FOOL EVER HEARD OF CPS??? Anyhow, this is a dangerous hobby and if you don't teach that, then someday when you are at work and your kids decide to show off your engine to one of their buddies then what!! Build a transportable starting stand and keep your arms/ hands away from the prop - then if your kids do try to start it; they would know how to do it correctly and safely...

@paul0367 I agree. it was a bad day - not paynig attention, in a hurry, kids wanted to se a quick flight then we had to go - my mistake, my fault, should have had the kids at a safe distance - all that is true. OUCH!!! I had a prop rip apart and hit me in the chest, no stiches but a good gash!!! the good news is I got 6 new props for FREE! Totally worth it!

When you start your plane, try putting the tail between two stakes. It will stop it shooting forward when it fires up, and always start it from the side, never in front because if the prop nut comes loose the prop will go straight into your "painful area :)".. and as you probally guessed, never reach over the prop, take your glo off by going behind the plane.... hope the handhas heald well, bet that hurt like mad...

i almoast did the same thing, you don't see the prop at 14000rpm, then an mistake is easely made.

this shows also why engine and prop manufactuars recomand a minimum distance of 10 feet to the spectators
