  • HOLY SHIT!!! I wanna know how he plays now :P

  • The yem was pretty sweet dude love covering that song on drums

  • i was about to rant about yet another obscure yet expensive handbuilt humbucker guitar with no discernible soul but that one actually has real character!

  • @whynottalklikeapirat I actually paid $400 for it. Raven West are very pretty guitars which give the illusion that they're pricey, but they're really affordable. ravenwestguitars . com

  • @rrescozoo5 Hah, thats funny. Well - coming from my ridiculous mac built-ins i liked the sound. I've had much more expensive instruments sound a lot crappier so i guess frequencies count for a lot with crap speakers. But even taking the price difference between europe and the states into consideration i'm amazed its possible to do decoration like that and still make it sound original as well within the price range. You happy with it?

  • @whynottalklikeapirat It was a great deal. The feel is amazing and it has a really smooth clean tone. I have been a bad guitar owner and still haven't upgraded pick ups from stock (it's been 3 years!) but overall it was well worth the money. I don't really see myself getting a new axe anytime soon, but I do need to find some new pick ups :)

  • Damn dude. You're chords are out of this world. I wish more players like you had record deals.

  • @TheMightySunfish Thank you, Mighty Sun Fish. I appreciate that :)

  • Damn dude you should take upon the legacy of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and further it to greater heights!

  • Please make a fusion band!!!!, you are cool, for real.

    Is that a schecter guitar?

    Thanks for the video

  • @javink666 Thank you. The guitar is a Raven West RG450. It does resemble a Schecter though :)

  • People only go to Berklee for getting to know musicians with influence anyway

  • talented. but it sounded like Eric Johnson on Bath Salts

  • did you get scholarship? or any financial aid?

  • Reminds me of Animals as Leaders.

  • u've been accepted but didn't go? what made you decide that? change in goals in life, too expensive, or did you go to a different music school?

    thanks in advance!

  • @Yoshi17th Too expensive :-/ Thanks for watching :)

  • @rrescozoo5

Oh, I forgot about that... It's like $50,000 a year or something crazy right? Sigh capitalism... xD

  • @Yoshi17th Wow I had no idea it was that much. $200,000 for a degree that is not in high demand let alone any undergraduate degree is not worth it.

  • @Yoshi17th Honestly, it was money... I had my heart set on Berklee, but when I couldn't even qualify for a loan big enough to go... I had to prioritize. I'm still doing music!

  • no bad man. you ever hear of jimi hendrix? probably not becaues he is beofre your time. but try to check him out sometime man. he is all i listen to.

  • @washingtonjournal Of course. I love Jimi. He was a huge influence on me when I was younger and still is today.

  • beautiful fret inlay...

  • beautiful man

  • @CraigDiLeo954 Thank you!

  • your amazing bro im surprised they didnt offer you scholarship

  • @Infernus757 Thank you, Infernus757.

  • Nice playing, but a bit too much reverb.

  • @CTrane88 Thank you

  • Clearly talented, I can't play even a fraction as well but I suppose I just don't "get-it"? Sounds wayyy just random not sure how to put it.

  • @rubenzall Thank you. I took more of a "showcase" approach than a "song" approach. Going back, I probably should have done the latter... but you live and you learn :)

  • Man, that should be a scholarship right there!!!

  • WHO ARE YOU?!?!?! YOU'RE AMAZING

  • @YanmingYuMusic My name is Sam Friedman :) There are links to check out / download my music for free in the video description. Thanks for listening and for the kind words. I really appreciate it!

  • You are really great man ever though about doing Berklee Online and just taking longer to get your degree I mean in reality you will probably not learn that much it sounds like you have pretty good style of your own going. godspeed man great stuff

  • wow..

  • Dude! You make the guitar speak! Lol, great song, congrats.

  • love the phish man! you are a great player! did you get in and how did you pay for it? i found out jan 15 if i got in

  • I'm just wondering what the goal of that piece was like what style you were going for... it was good, but to me it just seemed like a bunch of random notes... good job though.

  • @manscape25 nice name, manscape, anyways he's play around 7 different notes MOSTLY because he is in mostly one key as far as I can tell.

  • @717deathmetal The beginning is in Dminor, the middle is in no particular key... more whole tone ideas, and the ending bit is in Dmajor.

  • why didn't you went to berklee? Wasn't you accepted ? Or did you just didn't want to go ?

  • lot of notes but not sens....But very good technique.....

For my point of view this is just arpegios with reverb with that good technique u have you should try to say somthing with your heart and close your eyes.....

Congretulation it seems lot of work at home...

  • I give up

  • @SignsOfYuquiyu Please don't give up! If you like my video, send me a message and we can talk music.

  • @rrescozoo5 I haven't bro, I was just kidding. I say that whenever I watch somebody shred. I even told my guitar instructor that.

  • @SignsOfYuquiyu Fair enough :)

  • Fuck it, you don't need Berklee.

  • What kind of gear are you using? That is a really cool tone and a very cool technique too. Nice job.

  • such lovely playing and tone man, wishing you the best of luck...those harmonies until somewhat 2:30 were gorgeous...the rest was a bit too much for me, but your abilities are great :) thanks for sharing

  • @Fr3etd4nc3r heh.. not a phan of the phish huh

  • @Fr3etd4nc3r Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • Phish!

  • You have a very unique style. Reminds me of Andrew Belew.

  • Wanted to say I love this music :) And what brand of guitar are you playing?

  • You seem to hold the guitar in a way that you would hold a classical guitar. Did you have any classical training before?

  • @TheMeatty2 I have not had any classical training, I just found this position to help reach some of the wider chords. Thanks for listening!

  • first of all fuck you for having the nastiest trey guitar.... im a bass player and jealous of that beauty

  • This is amazing music. Thank you for letting me listen to it online.

  • it's like Space-Alien-Psychadelic-Jazz...and it's awesome

  • If that's you singing with the band in the link provided, I love your voice and how well it blends with your style. Very progressively chill stuff.

  • @polarispkk Yes, that is me singing with my band, Schak. Thanks a lot for the kind words! I really appreciate it.

  • Its like sex for my ears. Omg man, so glad you got in. Tabs would be highly appreciated :-).

  • this is so awesome. phish fans at berklee?

  • sounds amazing! reminiscent of Berklee alumni Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) one of favorites. this is great, man.:)

  • although it looks like 6 different songs compiled, you have an amazing sense of music and technique... Your band is amazing too! I checked it out... Keep the new things coming, but work them out in a solid way.. i think you are on the right track!! cheers from portugal mate

  • Constructive criticism: dial back the reverb. Your playing is complex beyond my capability but you can't hear some of it because of the slapback.

  • is Berklee a top-notch facility? Do you enjoy the school?

  • @aSunnyUnion I never went, so I couldn't tell you... but I hear great things.

  • @rrescozoo5 woah, THIS wasnt good enough to get into berklee?

Also, what guitar is that, i really dig it

  • @GasolineGodess I did get in. I just couldn't afford it. The cost of attendence is $60,000 a year. And thank you, it is a Raven West RG459

  • @aSunnyUnion Absolutely TOP NOTCH! Just like this musician.

  • You should make a Mathrock band.

  • Nice guitar and job on the song, you are a superb musician. Best of luck in college.

  • this is probably one of the most interesting pieces ive heard in a very long time

  • what kind of guitar is that

  • fucking amazing guitar. don't take that thing for granted. id kill for one of them.

  • Awesome song. I am also to berklee next semester (guitar major) and just needed a little advice on which kind of song to play. Can anyone tell me if you think giant steps by coltrane is good enough to get in?

  • how do you like that guitar i might get one but i don't really know what the neck feels like... what can you compare it too? thin? fat?

  • @samick94 I like it a lot. The neck is pretty thin actually. Not as thin as an Ibanez RG, but maybe a little thinner than a standard strat.

  • Awesome song. I am applying to berklee next semester and just needed a little advice on which kind of song to play. Can anyone tell me if you think giant steps by coltrane is good enough to get in?

  • @49591994 im a junior in hgih school and im curious too.

  • @49591994

You should play whatever you feel shows off your playing-style the most. Berklee is looking for people who have originality, creativity, and talent. Not just people who can play difficult music pieces. :)

  • @l2udolph I completely agree. I did this audition when I was 17... I was a bit preoccupied with showcasing my technical ability and got a bit lost... I hope others don't make the same mistake as me. I got in, yes... but I could have gotten in with a nice scholarship perhaps if my piece was more expressive and melodic with maybe a dash of technicality. It's over now, but all in all... I say play what you love and what makes you yourself, not something impressive.

  • Very distinctive style!

  • Watching this video, all I could think is this dude likes him some Phish, and then you bust out YEM, great stuff man, you're hella good, good luck on whatever it is you aspire to do musically

  • hey is this all you had to do for the audition or was there more ?

  • epic

  • You enjoy myself! ACCEPTED

  • keeps me thinking john mayer, then tommy emmanuel then back to Jm and so on... love it

  • from where did u learn this piece?

  • @varunkirk123 I'm pretty sure he wrote it.

  • Fucking beast dude! Im glad you got in, if you didn't, it would've been their loss.

  • absolutely sick! nice take on YEM too. btw what kind of guitar is that???

  • What the fuck was that? Like you're amazing but....idk! It was just weird...haha

  • strange.

  • haha i could hear the phish in you before i even got to the 2:00 mark. awesome.

  • something is phishy

  • I love it!!!! So different its hard to find a unique style these days, Good job man!

  • Amazing videoo. I have never seen a body wood like that though. What is it? How is the tonal response?

  • Did you get in?

  • Simply incredible. You will go places! I wish ya the best of luck, not that you need it.

  • BRAVO!!!! that was an audition of auditions and berkley will surely be fortunate to have you..i know you have gotten many comments and critiques on this but i guarantee this will get you into Berkley. it had everything one should have in audition and thats everytihng you got!! you showed skills in all areas of playing including a vast repertoire of chordal knowledge and theory as well as a myriad of technical skills most only wish for. they are lookiing for a diamond in the rough and u r a 50ct

  • dude so bizarre!! i love it.. glad they let you in

  • dude your insane. i love it. i'm trying to get in my self and now i'm pretty inspired

  • What kind of amp or pedals were you running through? I like your tone man!

  • sounds good man! congrats! (: hey one question! /: do they let you play with amplifiers, and... distortion pedals and stuff? (sounds stupid) but i'd like to know please! (: and backing tracks? jejeje any way thanks! and once again! Congratulations! \m/

  • You will be an amazing player I see it in you

  • who are you currently studying with at berklee?

  • @afroconnor117 I never went... I received a pretty nice grant of 20k, but even with that I couldn't make up the rest. Berklee is about 60k a year... so I'm just making my own stuff around town now hoping to get my way to a big city / music school.

  • @rrescozoo5

if YEM cant get you in... nothing can

  • @rrescozoo5 Oh my daze that price is insane... you need a scholarship really.

  • @rrescozoo5 Dude im practicing for berklee to but as u said its really expensive. i recommande you check out schools in Austria vienna. the edjucation is great and i heard some of the schools are even 1-5 k a year .. and i heard it was better tha nberklee because in berklee they give you a computer and u learn from therre. in vienna teacher teaches u everythhing .

  • that is some very pretentious guitar playing.... you had some pretty cool jazz progressions in there.

  • How old are you man ? i'm asking beacuse i want to study in berklee but in a few years

  • All that great technique is wasted. You are saying absolutely nothing. When you do get into College you will learn to harmonize. I don't mean that you can't play chords or runs arps. But the continuity is missing. I look forward to hearing what you sound like once you learn to put melodic content into your playing. Good luck!

  • This is awesome, but you should really try to get some other instruments in there to bring it together.

  • Just picked up a used RG450... mostly based on this video; I saw one for sale, and then scoured youtube for a review or video. I'm not much of a jazz player, though I love the genre and have to applaud your playing...

On mine, I installed a set of Dirty Fingers pickups... it's rock machine now!

  • So complex and crazy. I love it! I hope this was the best audition at that time, because if not...boy I have a long way to go :/ haha!

  • i love these comments

  • is that a schector or a PRS? looks kinda like a languedoc but i know paul doesn't use those venires and the sounds way too bassy to be one, enlighten me :)

  • if you didn't make it i am going to be soo crushed.

  • Amazing playing! Beautiful fucking guitar, dude! How long have you been playing?

  • did you get in

  • @nathan2rock Yes

  • @rrescozoo5 i have some questions that i would appreciate you answering: are all of the guitarist as good or better than you, what style of music do they focus on most, how do you get in?

  • @rrescozoo5 Do you see yourself working anywhere after berklee? Any sorta career?

  • OH MY! THIS IS QUITE AMAZING! :D

  • take all the effects off i bet it would sound more badass

  • Good god, that was awesome dude.

  • @tekken3y0sh1m1tsu1 Thanks man! Please check out my other videos and my band (link is in description) for more!

  • well use of sweep

style is interesting, I enjoy it

little bit more / longer pause between some phase/paragraph will be better

what's the brand of the delay you use? is it a digital delay? not it's no good, just a little bit overlapped (at least from my speaker)

  • how did you learn how to play guitar?

  • @MARXA123 It's hard to say really... various methods. send me a personal message if you want some deeper feedback

  • @rrescozoo5 I want some deeper feedback please!!! If you can!!! :) I'm playing guitar I want to get in 2...

  • @rrescozoo5 I want some deeper feedback please! If you can! :) I'm playing guitar I want to get in 2...

  • @rrescozoo5 I want some deeper feedback please! If you can! :) I'm playing guitar I want to get in too.

  • @rrescozoo5 your gross man! the finger picked ending was insane

  • @rrescozoo5 send it to me too please!! hahaha

  • @rrescozoo5 I'm also interested :)

You have some incredible speed there.

  • dude your style is incredibly strange and I love it!

  • @JPnumber1 Ha thanks man... I'm glad you enjoy it. Please check out my other videos and my band (link is in description) for more!

  • did you get in?

  • @SailThisShipAlone Yeah man, I made it

  • que guitarra tan hermosa.

  • @juergaman Es una Raven West RG450

  • First off man, killer guitar. I mean its possibly the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. Great technicality man, just a bit over the top with it though.

  • @hollowtones13 Thanks man... Looking back I would have done things entirely different. I was really worried about getting in so I tried to throw in as many styles as possible and display the most technical skill... to be blunt, I was naive and just trying to wow them. If you look at my other videos or check out my band, I write a lot of music with more simplicity and structure, but a year ago it didn't click with me to play that. Anyways... glad you like the guitar. It's a Raven West RG450 :)

  • sounds really bad,..the first one,...uhh,..but it appears you can play,..

  • I think you're a great player, but it dosent seem like you've every played with a band or anyone else. If you honed your skills and learned how to put a song together, you would be golden. Congrats on getting into berkley tho.

  • i think if this where slowed down and a good bass track and drums where behind it it would sound great! also if that all happened then alot of dynamics and phrasing would make this peice sound great

  • inovative but ugly, sorry man...not music just noise (from one musician to another) hope youll find yourself in berklee

  • ok anyone interested in auditioning for Berklee: your audition does not have to be complicated and complex like this! They are looking for talent, not "omg look what this kid is doing with a guitar! wtf!". This guy is doing his own thing, and i respect that. but it might discourage some people. I just got accepted for Spring 2011 and i audition with good old "Blue Bossa". instead of crazy shreding, i put "feeling". Its the "feeling" that will get you into Berklee.

  • sounded like behold... the arctopus... but worse

  • which of the songs did you play for the audition? If you played both, which would you say was more significant to get you in, the cover or the original?

  • see you this sept buddy!

  • very frank zappa-ish. i like this video

  • its a bit all over the place, but your a good player.

  • I love it. It's like a journey.

For everybody that is commenting on this not being "music", welcome to the world of not-pop. Meet Art Music.

  • keep things simple dude, u got way to much goin on, more notes with fast speed does not make you a better player. you can definitely play but i would tone it down a bit

  • your pinky shouldn´t be so far away! WORK ON YOU TECHNIQS

  • this is amazing playing! I could listen to this all day

  • thats a sick guitar..what kind is that?

  • I love the delay.

  • sweet just too much delay throughout the whole song brotha

  • ur a great player. i did not like the song, it didnt really resemble a song

  • @bimwopbarn Since when do musical notes on a guitar not constitute a song?

  • @bimwopbarn who are you to say what a song is or isn't?

  • @08theWilderness He is a listener and a listener can have his/her opinion. There's no point in making music if nobody listens to it.

  • excellent. tune?

  • reverb ftw

  • oye que guitarra es esa??

  • easy on the delay-lay-lay-lay-lay-lay-ay-ay-ay-ay...

and make sure that before being musically complex, it's nice to listen to, I'm not gonna listen to music just because it's complicated. if it sounds good, I don't care if it's only 2 notes.

  • @PoposNewGuitarChan if this is an audition piece then showing skill could be more important than being "good to listen to", even "if its only 2 notes".
