He's probably one of the best captains in the history of the NHL and he IS one of the best players in the NHL rankings and stats. Yes, Messier for Nicholls was a steal, but blame for that can all be laid at the feet of owner Pocklington- he didn't keep Messier because he simply didn't want to pay him. In my opinion, it wasn't solely the "Edmonton Factor" that won the cup that year- too much emphasis gets put on that.

Also, Lemieux probably could have matched Gretz's numbers, seeing as 2 years before Lemieux retired, his PPG was .05 below Gretzky's. Also, Gretzky's goal scoring mark is based on two things, other than his amazing skill: Bossy retiring early, and Bobby Hull leaving for the WHL.

Others were right (i think Mike Jordan did it too). I wouldn't put this ahead of any of the great actual hockey accomplishments on the ice (50 goals in 50 games, Gretzky's 60 records, etc etc. By the way, Messier is one of the best ever.
