@4thekidsTV 1950s TV was notorious for trying to rid content of anything sexual or controversial (such as racial integration), so I'm guessing that violence on TV wasn't a big deal until at least the 1970s.
@4thekidsTV I stand corrected then. My childhood was the 1980s and 1990s, so I was able to see it uncut on cable TV. By any chance was the punchline to the "let me read the bumps on your head" part cut in the 1950s and 1960s or do you not recall?
Honestly, I like the greedy aspect of Daffy's later personality, greed almost always leads to hilarious circumstances as could his being a total ham, what I don't like was the utter humiliation and emotional abuse Chuck Jones put him through. That part wasn't cool. But yeah, Daffy should always be a screwball at heart.
@NightOutcast Or how about one where Daffy suffers a cranial injury when an anvil being carried by a helicopter falls on him forcing him to get a new brain, turning him into what you see here?
I don't think people complain about Chuck's Daffy because of greed or selfishness. If anything, the earlier Daffy is an even worse "person" anyway. My complaint is that Chuck made Daffy a loser who supposedly needed to be punished, while Bugs was allowed to remain unpunished for being a screwball. It's also rather sad that they were made enemies; I think classic Bugs and Daffy would love working together to piss off hunters.
(Call me biased, but the Jones Daffy was always hilarious, Chuck knew how to make it balanced in his best shorts besides,Daffy was always a sadistic little jerk (while he had alternate motives for turning on Bugs in Jones’ hunting trilogy, he very obviously enjoyed the idea of the rabbit getting his brains blown out and even in earlier work like Tashlin’s Nasty Quacks he had outright murderous urges). Oh & another thing , watch Daffy dilly & you'll see why I defend greedy Daffy
google devilkais opinion Daffy Duck & you'll get what I mean. Besides , the PERFECT Daffy is the mix of the 2 takes , The 2 characterizations are what makes him 3 dimensional (bear in mind the Jones Daffy is completely different from the cranky 60's version...)
THANK YOU ! Finally someone who understands ! If anything the perfect Daffy is the 50/50, the best of both worlds: Clampett & Jones takes were complementary . That mix is what makes Daffy, well ... Daffy !
Sorry Guys , but the Jones version was actually pretty good. If you think about it, Greed is a form of Wackiness (ali Baba bunny) & in a way the 2 takes Wacky & greedy , are actually the SAME DUCK! Hey , in back in action, Joe Dante did great by giving THE DAFFY (compare how he acts with Bugs & then how he acts with DJ). So If anything , for me Daffy will always be defined by Selfishness, it is for me present in any incarnation of the duck. & both takes have their bad & good...
@saidi7975 Well I'm sorry, but a lot of people disagree with you on that notion that Jones' version of Daffy was funny, but many people like me would preferred the old Daffy. If I had my way, the old Daffy will be coming back and no more hostile Daffy..EVER!!!
The striptease part was never edited on TV (and I remember seeing this cartoon on TBS, TNT, *and* Cartoon Network). A local station *did* cut the part where Daffy hits Mr. Meek on the head during the "let me read the bumps on your head" part (but not the "how many lumps does your wife give you" part). So I guess stripping is okay, but head trauma isn't (at least on American TV)? The only places I could imagine the striptease part being cut is in Britain or Australia.
Originally released in May 1943. "Mr. Meek" is a reference to Bill Thompson's "Wallace Wimple", the meek little henpecked married man {he always talked about "Sweetieface- that's my big 'ol wife"} on the "FIBBER McGEE AND MOLLY" radio show. Daffy impersonates Jerry Colonna (supporting cast member of Bob Hope's radio program) at 5:32- his catchphrase was, "Greetings, Gate!".
No wonder why this episode was banned, but hey still Daffy is the best back in the 50's right? I still love Bugs Bunny but Daffy on the other hand must've been better than Bugs.
Really? I mean I've seen this before but it was a long time ago and cartoon network now plays looney tunes (the old ones not the stupid new show) and they never show any of this.
Is it just me or does the effect at 1:17 sound just like one of Bugs' lines in "Racketeer Rabbit" (which, from my understanding, references a radio ad back when tobacco companies could still make those)?
I love this daffy duck he is the best idk how they turn a wise quacking looney duck into a incompetent egotistical self centered duck... His name is DAFFY for god sake...Chuck Jones...eve tho he's probably dead but I'm still SMH what a disappointment...Chuck fucked up daffy's character ...
@05tonytin jones created some great 'greedy' daffy shorts... if it wasn't for that we wouldn't have greats like duck amuck and rabbit fire. and also jones also directed some great DAFFY daffy shorts (Daffy Dilly, A Pest in the House, etc.) i only find daffy practically unlikeable in those godawful daffy/speedy shorts directed by mckimson and lovy.
@yosmosonic It's because Daffy Duck was basically Bugs Bunny in avian form. To develop the characters, we had to differentiate. Despite that, either Daffy is way too damn funny. XD
@yosmosonic And even McKimson made some great Daffy shorts beforehand, in fact he arguably made the best compromise with a daffy AND greedy Daffy in the 50s (Dime To Retire, Ducking The Devil). I don't think Daffy's pompous loser moments were bad at all, it's just when they limited him to that same formula over and over. Daffy works best as a versatile spontanious character, one that can be loser in one short and a winner in the other.
My favorite is at 5:31 when he does his swami act. BTW does anyone know how many sugar cubes he put in his coffee? I counted 25 (5 helpings of 5 cubes each).
You know like the other user posted. In early cartoons Daffy Duck was probably one of WB's most cunning characters before he was revamped into the egomaniac we know today in later and modern depictions.

Dear 4EverYoung, The reading of the bumps on the head gag and the painting
the palm red gag(Which "Daffy Duck"performed as a Jerry Colonna
like Swami)that was still in the film. And so was the scene where "Mr.Meek"blasted poor"Daffy"
and he stood there in his birthday suit..without any feathers on. How that gag was permitted to remain in the film and the striptease
gag was edited out of the film in those days? I will never know?

Dear 4EverYoung, The strip tease scene was cut back in the late 1950's and into the 1960's.
This when I first watched this cartoon on local NYC tv..I didn't see the complete
print of the film..until many years later on TBS,TNT and on The Cartoon Network
(When these three cable tv stations still reran the vintage "Looney Tunes" and
"Merrie Melodies"movie cartoons).

@NightOutcast
There were Two versions of Daffy.
The Original wacky one created by Tex Avery and then refined by Bob Clampett.
The Narcissist Douche Daffy was created by Chuck Jones.
The wacky Daffy died with Bob Clampett's departure from Warner Studios in 1947.
So this leaves the world with the Douche Daffy.
