@questboy86 At full power about 1/8 gallon (1 pint) per hour. In a lightweight efficient airframe carrying 1 gallon it was estimated it might fly for 24 hours.
Hello, i am very interested in this motor. please try to start it on normal air, then fill a baloon with air and put it on the air tube. and tell me how long it runs for. i am dieing to know how long a engine runs on a baloon of air, and if it has a effect on power like a turbo.
How long ? The calculation straight forward. This engine is 5cc capacity. As a 4 stroke it draws in 5cc of air every other stroke so at 10,000 rpm it draws in 25000cc per minute (that's 25 litres or 9 cubic feet). So a 1 cuft balloon would last about 7 seconds.
@DragonsREpic Yes it is. In the video it is running in its "as built" configuration with a coil and contact breaker.
It runs on straight petrol with positive lubrication to the big end bearing and a dry sump, however as you can see from all the exhaust smoke that the scavenge does not quite keep up, particularly at tick over.
My Dad was a serious model engineer. This engine was built to attempt a duration record (24hrs?). Current 4 strokes 'waste' about 5% of the fuel capacity with oil and then have to reply on piston "blow by" to get the oil where it is needed. Not very efficient.
After this he went on to build a 15cc model of a BRM V8 Grand Prix engine.
@95ZacK95 I can assure it is a 4 stroke. Note unlike a 2 stroke the carburettor & exhaust stacks are mounted on the cylinder head. It has a separate oil tank & dry sump lubrication so it runs on straight "pump" petrol however at tick over the oil supply tends to be greater than the scavenge so it smokes a bit.
It is plenty powerful enough to fly quite a big plane. Most full size aero engines are 4 strokes as the improved fuel economy is more valuable than any additional engine weight.
In fact the basic 5cc weighs very little more than an equivalent 2 stroke although the ignition system does add quite a bit but then it would for a petrol 2 stroke as well!
He was in his mid 50's, i was still at school. He had been a serious model engineer all his life but seemed to enjoy doing things that bit smaller and more difficult, just to see if it could be done. His final model, never quite completed, was a scale 15cc V8 Formula 1 Grand Prix engine.
The vid is of an early "get it going test" as it has not been run for nearly 30 years.
In the next vid it will be in a mock plane fuselage, engine inverted, with a miniature coil, specially made petrol and oil tanks (it has dry sump lubrication), exhaust silences & a small RC servo on the throttle.
No record was never attempted as the endurance record itself was abandoned when the 10 pound limit on model planes was lifted, however fuel consumption tests did show indicate it probably could have flown a 10 pound plane for 24 hours!
I do intend to fly it in an appropriate RC plane. There are no plans as such but I do have an engineering 3 view drawing.
the ignition coil is bigger than the engine

how much fuel does it consume in one hour.

So do you have any 5cc for sale?
loh1110 3 months ago
@loh1110
Sorry. Definitely not for sale. It is the only one in existence.

The table didn't took off. I am sad.

@Gyrxiur
What you don't see in this video is the large lump of concrete on the table!

Sorry there are no plans in existence.
I do have an engineering 3 view section drawing that my Dad did for an article in the Model Engineer soon after he built it.

A four-stroke model aircraft engine before its time...I wonder how he worked out pumping the oil for it.

@95ZacK95 Cotton buds should do the trick. About as clearly 4 stroke as you'd ever get at that size.

Did he ever beat the record?
Rcstampedeking 2 years ago
No. The endurance record itself was abandoned when the 10lb maximum weight rule was abolished in the UK.
But fuel consumption tests confirmed a 24 hour flight was just about feasible.
quorneng 2 years ago
how do u fly it for 24 hours what bout petrol?? i kno its a little engine but it would run out of fuel
Tunerboii2045 2 years ago
The fuel consumption tests showed that it would only use about a gallon of fuel flying for 24 hours.
With the right airframe it could just about lift that weight.

What engine was that? In the video it was hard to see details of the engine.

Hi Nice Engine. 1) Did he have a go at the record and how did it go??. 2)Do you have a copy of the plans by chance
Thanks
