Actually, the Pilgrims... wait for it... boldly went where plenty of men had gone before. Doesn't diminish their courage, or their dedication to freedom of religion, but let's set the record straight.
@michal31131 Don't give that BS, Israel is the fourth biggest high-tech weapons producer and exporter and also one of the 10 strongest armies in the world, so if they can't deal with palestinians sticks and peashooters maybe they should just sit down and talk..this goes both ways of course. I'll kick you out of your house, build a wall around your backyard, put a guarded gate so you can come in YOUR home and wash my shorts at my will and see how you'll feel.
@michal31131 I don't really see your point here but do you mean Palestinians should have disappeared in 1947? they tried this, most of them where expelled during the Palestinian War (probably named like this by the Israelites) between 48 and 51, the Palestinians are refugees since then....I will always take side for the poor and dominated people of this f,,,u,,,planet.
@jamesappleridge Good question but first , I did not call them a nation. Second, a nation is a funny concept, you can't call yourself a nation, somebody else(preferably stronger and/or dominating) has to do it for you or else you are not recognized as such. To be called a nation people within it have to share a culture, language, customs, history..etc, and preferably a territory.So... I think Palestinians form a nation but are not recognized as one. Simplistic but thats what I think.

That's a good ad by William Shatner. I am inclined to think that he wrote it himself. I see William Shatner as down-to-earth, amusing and humorous, sensibly perceptive, and intelligent. His remarks in this ad bear that out: someone who can sensibly and intelligently, and amusingly, comment on being Jewish and religious freedom in the United States. Excellent work, Mr Shatner!
@TheAwesome45 tanks dude, i is a man of da World n very openmined, i is very tolerant of hot lesbians to but not da ugly ones, theyre dusgustin. RaSpex.
I thought the pilgrims disagreed with the Crown on how fundamentalist the Protestantism of England should be, and that's why they left to start a puritan colony which became America which even today can't get over its puritan past (I mean, you can vote, you can smoke tobacco, you can fight in wars, but you can't fucking drink!?). I mean, it's not like the pilgrims were being oppressed in England, they just thought the state religion should be more Low Church than Anglicanism - thus, America.*
israelipiper is correct. Just like people of other faiths (and American Power Base, a faith/religion is what Jews are - we are not a race), or people in general, we have differing viewpoints on many things, including Israel.
Shatner has the legal, secular rights of citizenship as a Canadian (& US?). Really he is a son of Israel. Gentiles may not like it, but even patriotic US or Canadian or British Jews are, in fact, very loyal to Israel as well, many have relatives even children who have moved here to Israel, & they support Israel against American, or Canadian or British etc. government decisions that are unfair to Israel. They try to be loyal to 2 nations, one an ancient birthright, the other an exile home.
@israelipiper i think you're generalizing too much. i think some jews promote israel, but certainly not all. i think some jews don't even like israel. i think you're right about the pilgrims. early documents made it clear that the pilgrims supported religious freedom for themselves, not for anyone else. anyway, the biologic descendents of the pilgrims often wound up with viewpoints which were different from what the pilgrims themselves had, thereby hastening the demise of that religion.
@AmericanPowerBase Yes atheism contradicts the Faith of Israel. But being a Jew is NOT "just" a religion. Historically and biblically being a Jew includes: FAITH, NATIONALITY & LAND. Only in the 20th century the idea of being just a religion crept in & but not completely. All Jews are citizens of Israel by birthright & do not go through a naturalisation process. Many US Jews live in Israel as loyal Israelis, over 200,000. NOT just a religion! History, Bible & Israel disagree with you.
@israelipiper here's what i'm wondering about. i have read that jews who switch to other religions ( like christianity and islam ) are considered to be "former jews" or "apostate jews", thus implying that jews are a religious group. nevertheless, i have read that jews who switch to atheism are still considered to be jews, thus implying that jews are a blood-line group, not a religious group. this seems like an inconsistency. i can't figure it out, and maybe i shouldn't even try.
Funny Shatner saluting pilgrims, who firmly believed they repalced Israel, free will was an illusion, the book of salvation was written & closed before the foundation of the earth, & that most people could not go to heaven--only those PREselected. They also did NOT believe in religious freedom, and booted out of their colony Christians believing in free will! BTW Shatner is an obvious Israelite name. Anyway most Jews in the world now live in Israel, just over 50% and rising. Thank God!
@israelipiper No most Jews are still living outside of Israel. Israel has about 5.87 million accordin got the lastest 2011 figures. Just in the US there are 5.2. Add Canada, South and Central America and you are at 6.2. That still doesn't include Europe Russia and Australia
@sondano Honest men differ in the matter. Some serious work shows majority of Jews in Israel & rising.US Jewish pop. nos. do NOT jive w/stats for out-marriage or small nos. of children Jewish born.Unless you accept that a lot of converts have been made, 5.2 is just a made-up number. Many US Jews hold active Israeli citizenship, if a bit secretly.Serious calculations suggest up to a million less Jews at least in the US than your figures--either way the trend is clear & good for all Jews.
@israelipiper I actually would prefer if Jews were living all over the world instead on a small territory in the Middle East. They are by far the most scientifically advanced people, statistically it's undeniable just look at the Nobel prizes. They are also extermely good at the arts and music. I'm not Jewish but I like them and I want them to be around in Scandinavia for pure selfish reasons:) More Jews = more innovation = better economy
Religion is not a lie, it is the cumulative knowledge of senescent beings that made us aware. We then realized that we are not the top of the food chain. We use religion as a set of rules to help us understand our obligations to our fellow humans and to that higher power. Remember the purpose of life is "To make it on earth as it is in heaven"
@GilleanFreire I wasn't saying that Judaism was a nationality. I was pointing out that this commercial is being directed at Americans, yet William Shatner is Canadian.
@Fishheadmama No shit, I'm not disputing that you can't be Canadian and Jewish. I'm just pointing out that this commercial is directed towards an American audience and is about American history... and Shatner isn't an American citizen lol
People often live separately from other people for religious reasons. Overtime, they turn into ethnic groups so when their descendants become secular, they still identify with a particular religion. Imagine being raised in Utah as a fifth generation Mormon and then becoming atheist/agnostic. You'd probably still have a lot of Mormon identity. Instead of just 5 generations, imagine 15 or 20 generations. Then, you'd see the perspective of a lot of secular Jews.
@MegaAstrodude i know that, ive studied how people identify they're background as such through sociology, i was just curious if he was an athiest or not :P
Jews attend synagogue, have Jew parents, and pay 10% tithe. JewISH kind of Jews, kind of part Jews, kind of don't practice. Hebrews, born of the Hebrew tribe. Zionist, believe all Jews, JewISH, Hebrews belong in Israel. Israel, an occupying power with no declared borders (not a nation), right of return, no definition of Jew, and no Constitution. Jews are wickedly annoying because they want to own everything. See Doug Stanhope, I hate the Jews. Zionism is racism, not a religion.
And you are so ignorant...you hate because your life is miserable and maybe you sexually deprived you can't function sexually. The only racist person here is you LOSER!
Funny how the Pilgrim Fathers were themselves religious bigots who denied even other forms of Christianity freedom of worship in their colonies. They were Calvinists who believed that only a few elect were predestined for salvation, and the only freedom they wanted was THEIR freedom the established Anglican Church. Why does the myth persist that those bigoted Englishmen were proponents of freedom of worship?
@VoiceOfModeration many jews vote democrat because we suffer from hate coming from republicans, I myself like the republican side better, but they have something against us...
@VoiceOfModeration I dont mean all of them, some are quite racist.. Like one time a republican said im wrong because I don't believe in Jesus, I said yeah I don't just in God, and he got a little agressive... Anyways theres radicals on both sides
@danitcho yea i guess, or the end times prophecy freaks who just want the Jews to be herded into Israel for the sake of the apocalypse...that is crazy for sure. But the Republican party has been the most organic and life-nurturing for Israel compared to the Democrats, that's for sure.
@VoiceOfModeration yeah I've never even been to Israel.. Good to know that about republicans, since I consider myself to be more of a republican then a democrat
Wasn’t shatner the guy who found his wife's dead body in the swimming pool??? Interesting that he got remarried soon after, oy vay no alimony and no messy divorce couldn't have a better situation happen by accident....or could it???
Unless you are a Palestinian then of course USAmerican policy makes sure your opinion is worth nothing and you will be kept in an open plan Gulag and slowly starved. Gee thanks US America you are so nice.
Those pilgrims were fundamentalist Christian English who were no longer welcome for being the complete uptight bores they were.
They were responsible for murdering the local American inhabitants, who weren't Christian, as they refused to exchange their food for copper because there was famine.
I'm with Shatner. I don't care what your religion is, or is not. One of the best things about this country, and one most of us take for granted, is we can do as we like on the issue of religion.
i swear i can't watch tv , movies or look for a book with out seen jews . nothing against them , but it amazes me .less then 10% of there population . 98% of the media. uffta
@AbuAvital The Genocide of the America's was the greatest one of all roughly 100 million dead over few hundred years. Disease, Starvation, War, Slavery and Continued Oppression and Occupation. The Treaties we signed we never honored as we eyed the 'virgin' frontier. Native rights are the most dangerous of all for their challenge the legitimacy of our very predatory and ultimately honorless civilization,
@Pahjx Yes, Shatner and Nimoy are Jewish. But Roddenberry isn't. According to Wikipedia: "Although Roddenberry was raised as a Southern Baptist, he instead considered himself a humanist and agnostic."
@sciencecomedian But that's only religion, religion does not determines ones race or nationality, don't you think it's somewhat ignorant(not quiet the word i was looking for) thinking like that?))
If Wiki says "he was raised as a Sunni" that doesn't mean he's Farsi or Arab, does it? "lol))
P.S. I beg of pardon to all present Grammar Nazis for my horrible English, so chill the fuck out))
@Pahjx Roddenberry wasn't Jewish but yeah both Shatner and Nimoy are. Awesome that they were not born in Europe. Shit I hate to think what would have happened to them there.
@dauntlessmath Yeah, but I don't hear any conflict. He says he's Jewish - and he says in America we can all practice our faiths however we choose. However we choose. He could be atheist or not. I don't see a conflict.
I was born and raised a Jew. I'm not religious. But I went to a friend of mine's seder on Passover. It was fun. Doesn't mean I believe in god.
Can you? How? I mean, it's like saying that you can be a Christian and an Atheist at the same time. It's a contradiction. You can be a secular jew. People can look at you as a Jew just because your mom is Jew but as long as you as a person don't believe in Judaism you're no Jew.
@Jasminewynja Judaism has become a lifestyle to some people and not so much a religion. They're Jews because they still do the very basic traditions, but they don't necessarily believe in Judaism as a religion. (It is confusing. Hope I was able to explain it.)
In Sweden ( a very secular country) most people celebrates christmass but very few of them are doing it because they are christian, they are doing it because they like the tradition of gatehring the family together and the cosy lights from the christmass tree. They would never call them selves Christians and Christians wouldnt call them that either as they are no believers. Its a bit the same IMHO :)
@sciencecomedian He wasn't. If he was, why would he have helped start Yeshivah uniersity? A school that forces you to take cources learning Jewish Law?
@sciencecomedian Well, a year has happened since your comment, but Einstein was not atheist. Nor did he believe in a personal God., but he repeatedly said he believed in a pantheistic god like Baruch Spinoza.
@1999521 Isn't the lack of belief in a deity the definition of atheism? Even if you believe that the universe is in some way unified and sacred, the fact that you don't think it was magically popped into existence by a creator and that no such creator exists makes you an atheist, doesn't it?
@deedubya286 The definition that uses "lack of belief" is BS, in my opinion. According to that definition, agnostics and even babies would be atheists (unbelievably many atheists in the net claim such things).
The real definition of atheism if "denial of the existence of any god". Einstein was not atheist, as he repetedly claimed. He was a pantheist. Not the same thing.
@1999521 I don't agree with your assessment of Einstein's belief or non-belief in god but I have gone through my list of his quotes on the subject and can't find anything to unarguably back up my position so I guess I'll just have to leave it at that.
Your definition of "atheist" is more rigid than mine. Wikipedia says both are correct but I don't know. Math and physics are my forte, not English. I done learned to talk good, that's all.
If one of yours moves to Canada, they're apparently still american.
THEREFORE, if hes american, all your run aways are Canadians. am I wrong? then Shatner is Canadian.
Also, Citizenship means nothing. just says you may live here for longer than 6 months. When martial law happens, Shatner will not be covered. he'll be tossed out with every other non American births.
THEREFORE, we should not consider eachother as where our land is, were all human, thats all.
Now I know he's Jewish I will shit on all my Star Trek DVDs and fucking burn them!!!!!!!!

lessermystery 10 months ago
Funny how the Pilgrim Fathers were themselves religious bigots who denied even other forms of Christianity freedom of worship in their colonies. They were Calvinists who believed that only a few elect were predestined for salvation, and the only freedom they wanted was THEIR freedom the established Anglican Church. Why does the myth persist that those bigoted Englishmen were proponents of freedom of worship?

too bad so many jews are lefty and vote Democrat - the antisemitic as hell party
VoiceOfModeration 10 months ago
@VoiceOfModeration many jews vote democrat because we suffer from hate coming from republicans, I myself like the republican side better, but they have something against us...
danitcho 10 months ago
@danitcho why do they got something against you?
VoiceOfModeration 10 months ago
@VoiceOfModeration I dont mean all of them, some are quite racist.. Like one time a republican said im wrong because I don't believe in Jesus, I said yeah I don't just in God, and he got a little agressive... Anyways theres radicals on both sides
danitcho 10 months ago
@danitcho yea i guess, or the end times prophecy freaks who just want the Jews to be herded into Israel for the sake of the apocalypse...that is crazy for sure. But the Republican party has been the most organic and life-nurturing for Israel compared to the Democrats, that's for sure.
VoiceOfModeration 10 months ago
@VoiceOfModeration yeah I've never even been to Israel.. Good to know that about republicans, since I consider myself to be more of a republican then a democrat

Jewish pilgrims owned slaves. In fact, 75% of the American slave owners were Jewish.

William Shatner was born Jewish but at one time, many years ago he joined the Klingon Church. I have heard that he is now non practicing.

I'm with Shatner. I don't care what your religion is, or is not. One of the best things about this country, and one most of us take for granted, is we can do as we like on the issue of religion.

People may have come here for religious freedom but many did not extend that same freedom to the native peoples. Always found that strange.
AbuAvital 1 year ago
@AbuAvital The Genocide of the America's was the greatest one of all roughly 100 million dead over few hundred years. Disease, Starvation, War, Slavery and Continued Oppression and Occupation. The Treaties we signed we never honored as we eyed the 'virgin' frontier. Native rights are the most dangerous of all for their challenge the legitimacy of our very predatory and ultimately honorless civilization,

Shatner is a jew?! I thought Leonard Nemoy and Gean Roddenberry were the only jews in Star Trek
Pahjx 1 year ago 2
@Pahjx Yes, Shatner and Nimoy are Jewish. But Roddenberry isn't. According to Wikipedia: "Although Roddenberry was raised as a Southern Baptist, he instead considered himself a humanist and agnostic."
sciencecomedian 1 year ago 13
@sciencecomedian But that's only religion, religion does not determines ones race or nationality, don't you think it's somewhat ignorant(not quiet the word i was looking for) thinking like that?))
If Wiki says "he was raised as a Sunni" that doesn't mean he's Farsi or Arab, does it? "lol))
P.S. I beg of pardon to all present Grammar Nazis for my horrible English, so chill the fuck out))

I thought Shatner was an atheist.
dauntlessmath 1 year ago 3
@dauntlessmath I don't know about Shatner, but you can be a Jew and an atheist. Einstein is one of many examples.
sciencecomedian 1 year ago 12
@sciencecomedian But he's talking about beliefs and practicing beliefs.
dauntlessmath 1 year ago 3
@dauntlessmath Yeah, but I don't hear any conflict. He says he's Jewish - and he says in America we can all practice our faiths however we choose. However we choose. He could be atheist or not. I don't see a conflict.
I was born and raised a Jew. I'm not religious. But I went to a friend of mine's seder on Passover. It was fun. Doesn't mean I believe in god.
sciencecomedian 1 year ago 2
@sciencecomedian ...the "conflict" is that he's actually a Canadian from Montreal who became an American through citizenship.
madcapromanian 10 months ago
@sciencecomedian
Can you? How? I mean, it's like saying that you can be a Christian and an Atheist at the same time. It's a contradiction. You can be a secular jew. People can look at you as a Jew just because your mom is Jew but as long as you as a person don't believe in Judaism you're no Jew.
Jasminewynja 1 year ago
@Jasminewynja Judaism has become a lifestyle to some people and not so much a religion. They're Jews because they still do the very basic traditions, but they don't necessarily believe in Judaism as a religion. (It is confusing. Hope I was able to explain it.)
HopefullyShrinking 1 year ago
@HopefullyShrinking
Thank you for your explanation :)
Jasminewynja 1 year ago
@sciencecomedian You can be a Jew and an atheist? No.
friedie1jeff 9 months ago
@sciencecomedian He wasn't. If he was, why would he have helped start Yeshivah uniersity? A school that forces you to take cources learning Jewish Law?
Jewdicris 5 months ago
@sciencecomedian Well, a year has happened since your comment, but Einstein was not atheist. Nor did he believe in a personal God., but he repeatedly said he believed in a pantheistic god like Baruch Spinoza.
1999521 4 months ago
@1999521 Isn't the lack of belief in a deity the definition of atheism? Even if you believe that the universe is in some way unified and sacred, the fact that you don't think it was magically popped into existence by a creator and that no such creator exists makes you an atheist, doesn't it?
deedubya286 4 months ago
@deedubya286 The definition that uses "lack of belief" is BS, in my opinion. According to that definition, agnostics and even babies would be atheists (unbelievably many atheists in the net claim such things).
The real definition of atheism if "denial of the existence of any god". Einstein was not atheist, as he repetedly claimed. He was a pantheist. Not the same thing.
1999521 4 months ago
@1999521 I don't agree with your assessment of Einstein's belief or non-belief in god but I have gone through my list of his quotes on the subject and can't find anything to unarguably back up my position so I guess I'll just have to leave it at that.
Your definition of "atheist" is more rigid than mine. Wikipedia says both are correct but I don't know. Math and physics are my forte, not English. I done learned to talk good, that's all.

meh. good for him hes promoting diversity for a melting pot country
RobeonMew 2 years ago
Yah but he moved to america
probably became an american citizen THEREFORE he is american
FredFigglehornRP 2 years ago
doesn't make sense ameritard.
