Second, a nation is a funny concept, you can't call yourself a nation, somebody else(preferably stronger and/or dominating) has to do it for you or else you are not recognized as such. To be called a nation people within it have to share a culture, language, customs, history..etc, and preferably a territory.So... I think Palestinians form a nation but are not recognized as one. Simplistic but thats what I think.

People often live separately from other people for religious reasons. Overtime, they turn into ethnic groups so when their descendants become secular, they still identify with a particular religion. Imagine being raised in Utah as a fifth generation Mormon and then becoming atheist/agnostic. You'd probably still have a lot of Mormon identity. Instead of just 5 generations, imagine 15 or 20 generations. Then, you'd see the perspective of a lot of secular Jews.

In Sweden ( a very secular country) most people celebrates christmass but very few of them are doing it because they are christian, they are doing it because they like the tradition of gatehring the family together and the cosy lights from the christmass tree.
