For me a lot of Chrono Trigger's appeal comes from the fact that even though it's marketed as "sillier" than most games from this company, when CT wants to get dark and serious, it doesn't mess around. For me the same is true for Super Metroid and A Link to the Past to some extent.
Chrono Trigger also feels very "Nintendoey" to me.

It appears Magus's Hit-stat actually affects his magic damage; he did ~4000 on level 94 and ~4500 on ** to enemies without resistance with Prism Specs. This is also why his Elemental 2s are more efficient than other characters' maxed out versions.
What happened at the end of the game when Chrono's mom and the cats went into the the time gate? I watched all the videos labeled Chrono Trigger, and never found it. Did it get deleted or something?
Man, fast-forward is indeed a lifesaver. If anything, it's likely to make stuff take LONGER by the game clock, but I got it down to less than an hour and 15 minutes, and probably 30 minutes in real time. And that's for 11 magic tabs (getting the freebie in Medina is totally worth it).
The most important thing is probably to skip the whole laboratory sequence. You should know the ZABIE code on New Game+, so skip the right elevator, go down the left one, and enter it.
I also did the fast-forward thing (today) both to rush through New Game+ and to Level to 99.
And man, this guy was WAY easier than I anticipated. No instant death attacks? Seriously? Heal Beam (with level ** magic stat for 999 recovery between rounds) and Frog Flare spell quick doom for this guy.
In the DS version, Lucca can get a specific piece of equipment (Elemental Aegis) that makes her immune to all elemental magic making her invincible for this battle.

Who knows if anybody's going to read this, but I'll say it anyways. The reason why media is so dark today is because that's what people want, especially younger people. The thing is that people are being exposed to darker themes at a younger age, so they're growing accustomed to it. It's not that games today are bad, or that people could consider games like Chrono Trigger a bad game just because it's lighthearted. It's simply that people want a little more edge these days.
chrono trigger is one of the best RPGs. and while it too is epic, the humor and lighthearted nature of much of the game is cool.
i agree with you about arts&entertainment becoming more dark.. but i think its just a reflection of the times. 9/11, iraq war, now the financial collapse.. stuff like that has an impact on the arts, too.

I think you'd have to be under lvl. 10 to get that, but that's impossible, since Robo starts at 10. So unless you hack the game, I doubt it's possible to see it, if it's there at all.
Actually I've done it legit, it's like HC said you have to run from like every battle to fight that form of Spekkio, and even though Robo starts at 10 you can switch him out, also I believe it's average Party lvl so 9 Chrono, 9 female an 10 Robo would equal 28, divided by 3 it's in fact less then 10, even if it's in like the 9 point whatever range.
True, but the fact that a night outdoors is bright compared to inside a pitch black room without any source of light does not make the outdoors at night considered not dark.
I did order the original cartridge of Chrono Trigger and have played through it before; I wonder how much of a difference there is with the DS version and if it's worth getting...'
how do i get new game plus? i beat the game with all the side quests done and i did it through the black omen, it made my kitties go through the time portal and then at the very end it was playing marle's theme on a loop. i tried pressing different button combinations, i tried soft resetting, i tried regular ressetting, but the new game plus option never came up. any help?

I Got Chrono Trigger DS for Christmas, too! ^o^ On my 3rd (technically) playthrough now. 2nd I defeated Lavos with Chrono and Marle at the very beginning. Took half my lunch break *or 30 minutes* to do the 2nd form (or as I like to call it the Cell form), but it's worth it. ^-^
Well HC, I hope you tell us what you think of the changes made to the dialogue and the item names and tell us which you prefer, the old one or the new one.
I prefer the old text but that's just me.
Luckily the game play and item placement hasn't changed and the monster Colosseum in a nice addition. I think they did an excellent job.
Ironman was pretty silly, which is the first reason why I'm stoked for the eventual "Avengers" movie (featuring characters and movie stars from the upcoming flicks).

Maybe playing Spore is what you want to do, HC... it is not a difficult game (or very challenging) but it is really silly at some points. And you look like the kind of person why is weird enough to actually do everything in all of the phases.
That's some Magic and Magic Defense stats on him. Even though your own stats were maxed he still did a lot of damage to you and you didn't do that much to him. I want to see how strong everyone's attacks are against more normal enemies.

You the whole point of Berkely was that it was deadpan. another RPG that has some humor in it is Magical Starsign, which while being a bad game, the only thing it had going for it was it humor.

I haven't been to the movies in such a long time, I used to go every week. I think they've gotten too obsessed with creating characters just to watch 'em suffer. (Like wow, I wonder Who gave them that idea) 'Cause that's more "realistic" or something. So much for escaping from reality!
Games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII stay with us for as long as we'll ever remember. Each game has its own charm and flavor, and I doubt this game will ever be lost to history's pages. Great job, I totally enjoyed watching the series and this helped me out a lot on Chrono Trigger DS because I havent played the game since the Final Fantasy Chronicles release, so i've forgotten a lot of stuff. Chrono Trigger was my favorite game for SNES, it was my favorite game for PS1 next to FF7, and now its my favorite game for the DS. its just an amazing game. I didnt like the joker in the dark knight, I grew up on the mid 90s batman cartoon so I like the more funny joker and harley quin then the psycho one. And I miss games that have a fun side to them, The new Tales game for the wii is serious but it at least it has the funny skits. I still think the best ff is 9 since the characters where more fun and who dosent like vivi the cutest black mage ever.
I've noticed the sudden darkness in the media as well. It makes me really depressed to see such great games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IX, and Wind Waker pushed under the rug for games like Fallout 3, Twilight Princess, and Gears of War 2. I mean, I like the new games....but the post-apocalyptic/pre-apocalyptic theme is getting a bit a bit killed, don'tcha think?

About games and movies being so dark... yeah, it happens a lot. I have found at least 1 ray of light in it, and that's the new Prince of Persia which I got for christmas :D Also, Mega Man 9, which brings us back to the past when games were cheery like that :D <-(I'm an MM fan).
I was expecting Dark Knight to be cool, yet amusing with just the right amount of sarcasm and humor... like the first one.
Instead, we get "Joker kills somebody, Batman tries to capture him, Joker kills somebody else, Batman tries to capture him again, rinse and repeat until we feel like we've reached a good stopping point."

Dark has apparently become "cool". I miss the days where we could play a game without having any kind of pointless backstory that tried too hard to be serious, and don't put in the little bits of humor that make it memorable. Games like Chrono Trigger and FFIV (I got that on DS; it's awesome) had the perfect blend of humor and seriousness, in my opinion.

because iron fist is the final form of her fist weps, she has to be max lvl to get it and it does max damage every attack i think...

In the Japanese version, it's like this:
Kobushi (拳 "fist") - standard fist
Tekken (鉄拳 "iron fist", and yeah, it's the same kanji as the fighting game series) - randomly confuses enemies
Gouken (剛拳 "hardened fist", and yeah, it's the same as the SFIV character) - randomly crits for 9999 damage (it's over nine THOUSAND!)
So iron fist was only the second form for me (though Woolsey may well have changed this - gouken is hard to translate). Also, not every hit is 9999.

You should do the weakest form of Spekkio: the frog form. That is if you manage to do the first part of the game barely leveling up at all.

Go to see Spekkio with Crono, Marle and Lucca all at level 9.
His form is based on highest level in the party, not of the characters in your stable.

how do i get new game plus? i beat the game with all the side quests done and i did it through the black omen, it made my kitties go through the time portal and then at the very end it was playing marle's theme on a loop. i tried pressing different button combinations, i tried soft resetting, i tried regular ressetting, but the new game plus option never came up. any help?

I Got Chrono Trigger DS for Christmas, too! ^o^ On my 3rd (technically) playthrough now. 2nd I defeated Lavos with Chrono and Marle at the very beginning. Took half my lunch break *or 30 minutes* to do the 2nd form (or as I like to call it the Cell form), but it's worth it. ^-^

Well HC, I hope you tell us what you think of the changes made to the dialogue and the item names and tell us which you prefer, the old one or the new one.
I prefer the old text but that's just me.
Luckily the game play and item placement hasn't changed and the monster Colosseum in a nice addition. I think they did an excellent job.

Maybe playing Spore is what you want to do, HC... it is not a difficult game (or very challenging) but it is really silly at some points. And you look like the kind of person why is weird enough to actually do everything in all of the phases.

That's some Magic and Magic Defense stats on him. Even though your own stats were maxed he still did a lot of damage to you and you didn't do that much to him. I want to see how strong everyone's attacks are against more normal enemies.

You the whole point of Berkely was that it was deadpan. another RPG that has some humor in it is Magical Starsign, which while being a bad game, the only thing it had going for it was it humor.

Heh...NO GAME is like Chrono Trigger. I love it so much. Like you said, it's fun, silly and a blast to play. One of the reasons it's my favorite game.

I got Chrono Trigger DS for christmas. They cleaned up a few things from the old translations, and added a few new things, I won't say what. But it's a good game all on its own, and I think you'll really enjoy it. Happy New Year, HCBailly. Here's to a good 2009.

Games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII stay with us for as long as we'll ever remember. Each game has its own charm and flavor, and I doubt this game will ever be lost to history's pages. Great job, I totally enjoyed watching the series and this helped me out a lot on Chrono Trigger DS because I havent played the game since the Final Fantasy Chronicles release, so i've forgotten a lot of stuff. Chrono Trigger was my favorite game for SNES, it was my favorite game for PS1 next to FF7, and now its my favorite game for the DS. its just an amazing game. I especially love the new ending for the DS version. Great job again =]

I didnt like the joker in the dark knight, I grew up on the mid 90s batman cartoon so I like the more funny joker and harley quin then the psycho one. And I miss games that have a fun side to them, The new Tales game for the wii is serious but it at least it has the funny skits. I still think the best ff is 9 since the characters where more fun and who dosent like vivi the cutest black mage ever.

I've noticed the sudden darkness in the media as well. It makes me really depressed to see such great games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IX, and Wind Waker pushed under the rug for games like Fallout 3, Twilight Princess, and Gears of War 2. I mean, I like the new games....but the post-apocalyptic/pre-apocalyptic theme is getting a bit a bit killed, don'tcha think?
Anyways, I digress.
I'll be sad to see this LP gone, but I'm looking forward to your others! :D

I was JUST about to write "didn't you notice Shock dealing more damage than Luminaire?" when I thought about their equipment, that Robo had the PrismSpecs. Anyway, I know what you mean with the series not wanting to end.
About games and movies being so dark... yeah, it happens a lot. I have found at least 1 ray of light in it, and that's the new Prince of Persia which I got for christmas :D Also, Mega Man 9, which brings us back to the past when games were cheery like that :D <-(I'm an MM fan).

I was expecting Dark Knight to be cool, yet amusing with just the right amount of sarcasm and humor... like the first one.
Instead, we get "Joker kills somebody, Batman tries to capture him, Joker kills somebody else, Batman tries to capture him again, rinse and repeat until we feel like we've reached a good stopping point."

Dark has apparently become "cool". I miss the days where we could play a game without having any kind of pointless backstory that tried too hard to be serious, and don't put in the little bits of humor that make it memorable. Games like Chrono Trigger and FFIV (I got that on DS; it's awesome) had the perfect blend of humor and seriousness, in my opinion.
And is fighting Nu Spekkio at any level lower than max voluntary suicide?

You know, you could've just used an Experience code or something to max out your stats sooner.
Unless there's some hidden calculation system ala Pokemon and EVs.
