  • Of course it makes perfect sense...I love how dark cartoons were back then...

  • Fleischer just shits on Disney, I could of put that in a more articulate manner, but i think that pretty much says what i want it to.

  • THIS is the fluidity that modern day cartoons lack...a trait that sets apart the awesome, from the "meh."

Like the original Tom and Jerry cartoons vs the garbage Tom and Jerry of today

  • I had to watch 0:34 several times before I had the foggiest idea what happened there.

  • ;__; WHERE AM I!?

  • Comment removed

  • omg that was beautiful

  • where can i found the lyrics of this song?

  • @penguinfan174

Folks, I'm goin' down to St. James Infirmary,

    See my baby there;

She's stretched out on a long, white table,

She's so sweet, so cold, so fair.

Let her go, let her go, God bless her,

    Wherever she may be,

She will search this wide world over,

But she'll never find another sweet man like me...

  • @phanaticgren

Now, when I die, bury me in my straight-leg britches,

Put on a box-back coat and a stetson hat,

Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain,

So you can let all the boys know I died standing pat.

An' give me six crap shooting pall bearers,

Let a chorus girl sing me a song.

Put a red hot jazz band at the top of my head

So we can raise Hallelujah as we go along...

  • @phanaticgren

Folks, now that you have heard my story,

    Say, boy, hand me another shot of that booze;

    If anyone should ask you,

Tell 'em I've got those St. James Infirmary blues

  • What did i just watch, cause i wanna make a character based off it

  • WTF

  • ghost shuffling

  • that is the coolest longlegge undead transfomed dancing clown with a flying fish skeleton ang flaming skulls with tophats that i have ever seen

  • umm highly disturbing and just messed up I love to watch old cartoons but this one is messed up sorry,

  • Older Cartoons look much better than the ones we have now. Just look at the animations!

  • @FranCedriCo that is because they where made for Cinema (movie theaters). since Tv budgets are less expensive than movies animation got a lot worse.

  • @Recedebo So that's why the Betty Boop cartoons had such amazing animations! Thanks for the information! :D

  • This is just, stunning. Bless this man.

  • BEST Betty Boop

  • Mute this and Play Dubstep

  • Its not really a 5 second advertisement because there is a second delay in between the ad and when you can click out of it = 6 seconds. I'm not mad, just don't lie about it.

  • this just straight freaks me the fuck out

  • does anyone realize the background illustrates the song

  • Even though I was a kid when I used to watch this cartoon, I knew there was something "adult" going on that I didn't quite get. It was creepy but I still liked it.

  • perfection))

  • This some crazy shit.

  • Well, this is really bizarre, but you have to admit that the animation is very impressive....

  • what kind of drugs they used back then? seems like a hell of a trip

  • @JackBelialAntihero Cocaine as well. There was coke and opium, nothing else

  • what show was it from

  • @MrGameReviewer21 it was from betty boop. didn't you noticed the girl in the glass container?

  • And people from that time didn't notice how creepy their cartoons are? o.o

  • EPIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY!

  • Beautifully disturbing

  • Oh hey, it's that video I watch, turn the volume up for, forget how high the volume is, and then deafen myself by watching something else. I really should just learn to constantly re-watch this video and nothing else.

  • cartoons from this era are scary!

  • Old cartoons are beyond creepy...

  • ok KIND OF CREPPY but AWSOM

  • wat

  • "Put a red hot jazz band at the top of my head so we can praise Hallelujah"

so you can now understand that gibberish part

  • psychadelic

  • i'd tap that. XD

  • I see where anime gets its influence from...

  • That was amazing! I'm not sure if "swag" is the best way to describe the ghost looking thing but it really is.

  • does anyone else find it weird that the little dwarf guys had betty boop locked up in a glass coffin?

  • @whycantifindaname69 No; that is straight out of the original Snow White story.

  • max fleischer's cartoons are so super smooooth

  • So creepy and yet so awesome

  • I find myself going 'the hell?' on one hand, and completely mesmerized by the sheer talent and effort that went into making this beautiful animation.

  • slender man

  • look at the background... its creepy as

  • This footage is amazing. Never seen it before. Thanks for putting it up. Just posted my own rock/blues version of this song on my channel. I think the tune has existed since the 18th century and has been reshaped over and over in folk, jazz, blues... But this must rank as one of the most creative and surreal forms.

  • so wierd ... but cool...

why did the american animators use to f*ing many frames for their cartoons back then XD it's sick, so much work! hope they did at least get paied sheet?.. and hopefully much!

  • betty boop is dead !??

  • If I recall, they had the queen/witch transform Koko the Clown into a long-legged ghost (at 0:37) to make it easier for the animators to trace over Cab Calloway's dancing

  • 影もそのとおり動いてる!すごい!!

  • FEEEECK This scares the hell outta me. Idk why.

  • @TheMikeMeadows It's supposed to. It's Fleischer's representation of the underbelly of Manhatten. A somewhat, ghost tour of their own trace memories :)

  • you dont know how many times i watched this its so funny ....new cartooons suck

  • I bet Stephen King watched this, and got the idea to write IT....this clown is SO scary.

  • I was so entranced by Koko's dancing that I had to watch this four or five times before I even noticed anything that was going on in the background. :o

  • this wuda taken ages to make. fuck, straight talent old school animators had aye?

  • Epicly Awesome song and video

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

  • awsome

  • Opium's a helluva drug

  • @AColonDashSix COLD-BLOODEDDDDD

  • Koko the Clown is from Max Fleischer's 'Out of the Inkwell' early animation series. To create more 'realistic' movement, he would film a live actor and 'trace' the images from that film for Koko.

You can definitely tell by watching this clip by how much more fluid Koko's movements are than the other characters.

Mesmerizing, eerie little cartoon... I can't stop watching it! Thank you so much for posting!!!

  • Notice the perfect motion capture of the great Cab Calloway in this early example of Rotoscoping.

  • ah, sweet childhood....and my 'rents wonder why I wound up a goth....

  • Magnifique, merci!

  • Ghost got moves

  • thats okay.i like not being able to sleep <:S

  • thats okay.i like not being able to sleep :S

  • Fleischer + Calloway=joy.

  • classics, :) amazing.

  • Heavy Oldschool Shit!

  • You know that the old Disney guys smoked mad doobies and listened to Jazz classics. "Hey, man, what if we made a cartoon out of St. James Infirmary blues?" "Fuckinay, man."

  • @XCallXMeXmatt

    ain't disney

    its max fleischer

    max was city and jazz

disney was in to farm livestock

  • @hopdoehop disney was into shit

  • inspiring, but also eerie with the cartoon...:O

  • He performed often in Betty Boop Cartoons^^

  • I'm so glad I had the chance to see Cab Calloway live in concert. I even met him face to face (just a brief greeting). He was performing at a summer music camp where I was a counselor back around 1990 or so, and even though most of the kids had never heard of him in their lives, he totally rocked the house. They LOVED this cool cat!!

  • This video should come with a warning that says, "Don't watch on crack"

  • There will never ever be anything to top this. Ever.

  • I didn't know they had LSD back in the 30's

  • @KlocTower86 They didn't O_O

  • if this song was the only thing i ever heard for the rest of my life, i'd be perfectly fine with it

  • I found this in 2007, and i was searching on youtube for four years for this video.

  • this is terrifying

  • This is one of the trippiest things I've seen.

  • @Ghettoreel agreed, and anyone who is not a native English speaker should be banned from making comments in case they choose the wrong word to convey what they mean.

  • omg i wanna learn to dance that smooth

  • I actually love this :>

  • If i was watching this as a kid, i would be completly freaked out. But, i guess it does just express sadness

  • Nightmare fuel.

  • THIS IS TELEVISION

  • @Kwabpiraat And here I thought this was madness. thanks for clearing that up!

  • @rbaseel Ghehe Funny!!!

  • whats the name of the cartoon?

  • @altidnumaistiu Betty Boop

  • Cab Calloway quit playing music to hoop in a Negro league. Dude could ball.

  • it freaks me out whenever the characters have both rows of teeth showing, but still an awesome cartoon!

  • why does the animation blow away 90% of cartoons that come out nowadays? sheesh that mustve taken forever

  • something about koko the clown just....just freaks me out...

  • Hard to believe LSD hadn't been synthesized yet.

  • @ScinLaeca358 opium

  • LOL wut am I watching.

  • freakin trippy

  • wow old cartoons are good!!!!!!

  • From Max Fleischer's "Snow White," my favorite cartoon of all time. The cartoons today can't touch this.

  • No one can ever be as awesome as Cab Calloway.

  • WTF

  • This era of animation still had so much of the human touch to it. Utterly beautiful. Still good old Fleischer nightmare fuel, but utterly beautiful.

  • This is by far the coolest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.

  • yes.

  • i wish i could find this version of the song any clue,,,,,,not st james infirmary the origonal this version is best by far just needs volume.

  • Who can say he don't likes it.

  • It wasn't really meant for kids, but played before movies.

This is a homage to the Harlem Renaissance, and Fliesher studios were aware and influenced by this movement.

They used a process called Roroscoping to animate over live action footage. If you ever watch the old Superman cartoons, they rotoscoped as well. Kind of a "cheat", but still used in movies today, recently "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly".

This is the equivalent to Katy Perry being on Sesame Street.

  • @ethanwc Rotoscoping*

  • @ethanwc I always wondered how they got the cartoons to move exactly like Cal being as how old it was hmmm learn something new everyday

  • Were all the episodes of Betty Boop like this ? This is by far the creepiest animation I've ever seen!

  • man, this is the shit!

  • This is really creepy. But cool at the same time.
