I think you guys are reading WAY too much into it. This is a fine performance by an experienced dancer and a great musician. Nobody looks like a fool here. It is very entertaining. What a shame some people cannot enjoy anything.
This is how drumming should be done; all of these negative comments are ignorant, and coming from amatuers and novices. This is entertainment, which is what it's supposed to be.
As far as the dancer goes, Souhail bey is a Master, and he runs the show.
@durgaaa then you suck even more than what I thought...30+ plus years and still you think a dancer is the focus of a show. This video obviously represents a show where HE is the focus, he doesn't need to make her look good if she is unable of keep up with him at the first place. Would a lioness give more chances to a rabbit just because it is a rabbit? Lesson 1: If you are not ready and up for a challenge, keep your ass seated. Same goes to your opinions.
@omarsitonumbereight - your mouth is so foul, you need all your teeth extracted. Your kind will die in a knife fight with other macho-ignorant thugs. You know nothing about stage performance. Go crawl back in a spider hole. Your hanging is immanent.
@durgaaa you got pissed. Means im right. Don't get mad and start spreading some loving. Perhaps learn about pole dancing and leave the belly dancing as you are not making any good to it.
@Threewinds wrong. The dancer was not following his keys...If you are a good player you throw some hints at the dancer about rhythm and tempo changes, she didn't get them quite well. She was not very experienced anyway and was improvised...therefore I assume this event was for them to play as there is minimal space for dancers.
You obviously need to understand the music and the dance before throwing comments about him. As a musician it is frustrating when dancers can't keep up with you.
@omarsitonumbereight I see that you are making every one with an opinion "wrong" ! The bottom line here is that the dancer is not very experienced and the drummer is sounding like a Machine Gun ! He is showing off and could care less about working with the dancer. It is obvious to anyone who knows about Arab music. The drummer, though technically good, is ungracious and egotistical, and has no empathy or desire to work with this dancer, only against her. I have heard MUCH better drummers.
@durgaaa So you are one of the people who believe belly dancer is very traditional...if we were down to specifics she would need to learn maqams and know what kind of rhythms were going to be played based on the maqam. She challenged him and this is what you get. Sorry but that would be in Arabic Music, the real traditional way, not the belly dancer perfect world type. I can pretty much make a dancer look good playing boring slow patterns...or be a real percussionist and put out a wonderful show
the dancer is good, but she needs to use her arms and legs more... and Souhail is extremely good while he is actually playing and not abruptly stopping to make commentary. He's clearly the above and beyond talent in this dancer drummer equation
Audience interaction is part of many folk traditions and arts... to remove from that energy to make it more "western" and a regurgitation or "show" would be a shame and unworthy of the traditions the actual art comes from
Yes, Souhail is one of the best in the US. But again, it doesn't matter who he has performed with or where he has studied. Souhail plays better than he "performs". I don't know why some people like his stage antics of forcing the audience to clap, of him constantly talking about the bellydancers, pointing at them and groaning (Safiyah video). That's what makes a great performance? Can't he just shut up and play? The theatrics are unnecessary and they diminish his sometimes brilliant techniques.
My husband and I have known Souhail for years. He is one of the finest drummers in this country and one of the best soloists - that is why he has been teaching at Mendocino camp for the past I don't know how many years and why he has played with Dina, Fifi, and countless others, and has performed with Sting, Kenny Burrell and many Arabic superstars. This man is both technically accurate AND a great performer. Lots of people can play, not many know how to PERFORM!
yes he does pause for showmanship. he can easily play for hours in any style you'd like. he has been playing for decades and was educated in one of the finest conservatories.
He can play basic accompanying rhythms to music for hours, but he can't solo for hours. I honestly don't care where he was educated, it doesn't prove anything about his natural talent. There are lots of drummers claiming they have learned in conservatories located in Syria and Lebanon, and you know what? They are terrible, to put it bluntly. One drummer comes to mind but I won't post his youtube username.
but i still can't help but be in awe of laila. i wanna learn to bellydance actually.....hahaha. and i wanna be as good as souhail at the doumbek/tabla someday....ahh i am but an amateur :)
Souhail, you are very good but one thing I have noticed is that you do not keep the beat going. You are not continious so to speak! Your longest solo was no more than a minute. Though you are great, we would like to see you play non-stop. Im sure it would be a great fiesta ;)
there's a video of him soloing for about 8 minutes :P the only reason he didn't keep the beat going continuously was because laila had to keep up! i mean she's fast, but he can go faster so...;)
In the 8 minute video, he does pause plenty of times. He can't play continuously, gurbetchi is correct. I suppose he's lacking stamina, his rolls are great but he can't do those for long either. Souhail is very much a "show-off" drummer and if he could play a fast, non-stop solo he would do so. This interaction with the dancer is nice, though he doesn't need to play around so much, the other video with Safiyah was truly disturbing.
i think he just does that for the sake of the show and to entertain the crowd, he plays with them that way. you can't be that good and not be able to solo for more than a minute.
1 ore 2 jokes is nice for the laugh and show. But this is over the top. Verry pointless. I didn't enjoyed and im sure the dancer didn't to.

Yes, this man does not know how to work WITH the dancer -- he wants to trip her up and be the Star, making the dancer look inept.

where is Souhail Kaspar from??
aassyr1111 2 years ago
This is a pretty good example of how not to drum a solo for a belly dancer.
If you are a really good player, you make the dancers look good. You are not showing your self off, you are showcasing the dancer.
Mr Kaspar is an excellent technician, and a very good teacher by reputation, but I would be very hesitant about dancing with him.
He obviously needs to be the pretty girl.

I get your point, but Souhail is the draw here, not her. He's the "rock star" in the venue.
