This is a great song and band to cover because instead of just trying to show off, you actually UNDERSTAND the music. I think that is the most important part of Karnivool's music is to feel it. And one of the best ways is through drums. So even though I hate most covers of anything simply because it leads to copying instead of creating, good job. As for these picky bastards, they are just jealous because you picked an intense drum song to play, and played it probably close to perfect.
@AweAttack Oh man, I wish I took that back. I just saw your username. I guess it is possible to fake feeling the music. Get a new name man, it doesn't suit you or your surprisingly optimistic and heartbreaking comments on people's harsh words.
@AweAttack Hey man I appreciate the comment heaps. Sorry about the username, i made that name when i was 12, and yes I do regret it :P. I definitely don't think of myself as a 'drumpro', haha and I suppose I was a little immature when i first made my youtube account 5-6 years ago :P I actually don't know how to change my username? Does that mean I have to create a new account? Because that would be rather inconvenient!
non-drummer here. Was just wondering what the pedal next to your bass drum pedal was for. Also, I think the camera angle is great, and I think the drums sound fine, but as I said, non-drummer. Keep em' coming man, I love your videos!
Good cover, just have to watch the dynamics a little bit and a couple of times Steve throws in some Snare+bass on the same beat! bar that a very respectful cover.
Cancel orPost Attach a video Yo dude, im a guitarist not a drummer, maybe a little, i can keep a beat, i would love to put in a request, Porcupine Tree - Oceans Twisted, mainly the outro i am keen on, i would just really really like to see how the fuck it is played, it does my head in trying to picture it being played. I reckon it has the same feel as goliath to some degree, anyway.... Nice tight as fuck drumming :)
Yo dude, im a guitarist not a drummer, maybe a little, i can keep a beat, i would love to put in a request, Porcupine Tree - Oceans Twisted, mainly the outro i am keen on, i would just really really like to see how the fuck it is played, it does my head in trying to picture it being played. hey dude, fucking love karnivool, especially steve judd's drumming, i'm really impressed with how well you covered this song, it is one of my favourite songs to play on the drums. you did the song justice man, The only one thing i'd say is for this song, it lends itself to a nice crack of a snare, and you have a deep power snare going on here. it's a nice snare sound but if you get what i mean, that's the only thing i think. but yeah dude, sick video, and good luck
@yourmumhasballs thanks for stopping by man, I appreciate the comment :) looking back on it now, I totally agree - when I tune my snare these days I just tune it really tight as you said to a nice crack, really suits Simple Boy and The Caudal Lure too
I think the Kit sounds great dude, and the Camera angle is okay. I mean, it's hard to find a good angle to film drums, but apart from only being able to see half the snare, you can see everything you're doing.
@SKSM117 - Dude, you are sad human being. It's blatanty obvious to everyone you're an overweight depressed smelly disgusting excuse for a man, who watches his days pass by entertained by xbox and porn. Get off your ass and try play this song a tenth as well as DrumBum mate. That's if you can get off your sweat stained couch with your lard legs. Stop giving people shit and take a look in the mirror you self loathing drain on society.
Is it just me or are you sitting in front of the kit the wrong way? u have ur bass drum to the side of you, whereas it should be right in front of you. But hey, I guess its a matter of taste.
Not to be a wise ass, but you're playing lots of stuff that's not in the song and you're not playing alot of the stuff actually in there.
Sure your drumming is pretty solid but you're playing the same fill over and over again. I suggest you listen to the different fills again to get it right.
@Mart33Nat0r hey man, il definitely look out for the repetitive filling ay thanks for pointing that out. i don't actually like copying out the whole piece though - i used to do that a lot - but i prefer to play with my own style adapted to the song, if that makes sense? thanks, yeah awesome song!
@drummerbedford yeah fair enough man, well im doing a cover of Change soon - i'm going to try play everything as close as possible, but with a few additions of my own style (not compromising what's been played by steve, just adding other rhythms over the existing ones). Il let you know when that ones done :) thanks for watching
Ha. Finally got a room with some sound proofing, eh? No more neighbors complaining I take it? I was browsing through stuff from you and Dan and I saw you had done Goliath, I immediately went "Hell yes." *clickityclick* Keep it up, man. 3 years and you haven't had a flop video once. :D
Awesome! How long did it take to learn / memorize this? It's such a complex song you either have a great memory or you spent a long friggin time with this. lol
@BootBazaar thanks mate! ah i duno, i find it hard to answer these types of questions. Basically, by the time I want to play a song, I would have listened to it a billion times so I guess that would have an impact, but for this song i guess once you've got that main groove, the fills and everything else just flow. thanks again
can i suggest that you tighten your snare drum skins? i know steves skins are pretty loose, but it'd give your kit a massive edge and it changes the sound of your whole kit.
@TheVilliersBand thanks mate! yeah ive been a bit lazy tuning my snare this time around, i bought a remo controlled sound but im not really happy with it, i had a powerstroke 3 just before, tuned it to this sweet high pitch but it broke in 2 weeks! any tips on tuning snares would be great im terrible at it :P
1. put on the skins from scratch, then tighten up each lug simultaneously (on both sides, not just the batter side)
2. once they're giving resistance when you're tightening, start by tightening each lug to as tight as it'll go before your hand falls off, repeat on both sides.
3. play it in
4. look at it again in a few days, your snare should have loosened off from when you last tightened it.
This is sick man! Youv improved heaps since your Shutterspeed cover. Well done man. Legend! Hopefully soon i can set my shit up to do some recordings like this. I messed to DLC - Big on my electric kit a few weeks ago haha. I uploaded it. nothing special becuase theres no sound from my kit, but you can see :P haha! Have a squiz.
hey dude i know you said you're finishing school and you have study etc, but soon as you're done and you get a chance can you do a cover of change? i can play it but have no way of recording drums :( so yeah. do change :D
umm sorry i have to be harsh with these things.. this is shit man. obviously you can play the drums to an extent but you do not have the grace and rhythm required to play anything by karnivool. and on the 'please wake up' heavy outro, what ur doin on the kick is completely wrong which i found strange coz its so obvious. all the extra fills in there were unneccessary also. keep trying.
if you don't mind some constructive criticism, I think you need to find a bit more groove rather than trying to clinically nail everything if you know what I mean...
@JTbassist09 thanks man, yeah thats definitly something i wana work on as soon as i finish school. I actually started learning some linear drumming today, its cool stuff. im not really in a band at the moment, just jamming with people - though Sony is pretty keen to start a band with me around the start of next year i think. thanks for watching!
@ProMarkChris yeah this is at my house, in a spare room - we boarded up the window with these thick doors we found at my dad's work and then made some frames arond the room and stuck acoustic material on them. hope that helps
I hope you understand that you can't effectively reduce the acoustic & mechanical transmission of sound simply by applying acoustic treatment. The materials you have applied there merely absorb and diffuse sound at certain frequencies, they won't provide any real form of sound proofing unless the room that you have built shares no rigid physical connection with the residing rooms.
@boecke91 yeah, it does escape into the rest of the house but we are working on reducing that, but we found some blast doors at my dad's work lying around so we boarded them over the window with acoustic seal tape which tends to block sound from going outside pretty effectively. thanks
@ProMarkChris yeah this is at my house, in a spare room - we boarded up the window with these thick doors we found at my dad's work and then made some frames arond the room and stuck acoustic material on them. hope that helps

I mean, i play the tracks to learn exactly What they are doing and then take that knowledge to mix it up further down the road.
If you like goliath you should look into meshuggahs spasm or stengah!
