What ever happened to the womens groups that were once so great and dominate. if i'm not mistaken i think Xscape, SWV, TLC and Destiny;Child may have been some of the last female groups of this era before everyone went solo crazy.
WOULD YOU BELIEVE...Motown didn't want to release this tune because it sounded too jazzy...Smokey Robinson, the writer of this tune, had to fight with Motown's Quality Control tooth and nail to get it released - Quality Control was the group that decided which tunes would be a hit and which ones weren't - I would have LOVED to have a job like that back in the 60s!!
I agree BigSoulMan...this actually was covered by Sarah Vaughn. This was SO overlooked, but it kills. That harmonica break (Stevie Wonder?) and the spare and dark tone, and the song so totally underplayed in the singing, you have to listen to the words to "get it"....a musical work of art.
@mcbrion So thankful for your rich remark mcbrion. Thx rates for the correction of Ella as opposed to Sarah. Saw them live at least 200 times. Was in love with Gladys and Wanda. Was an original fan club member with signatures and my Marvelettes Fan Club button. Those were truly the days. RIP Gladys and thankyou for the good music and good times. Thanks mcbrion for a descript and meaningful remark.
lukewilliamscostello YOUR A SICK SON OF B-TCH!! CRAP LIKE YOU MAKE ME SUPPORT THE PRO ABORTION MOVEMENT!!! your mom must be really proud of what fell out of worn out of her puss infected womb when she had you!!
You so right of the music ,this generation today do not know good music ,I can picture myself where I was who I was with how was the day .Now a days you see these people listening to stupid ass rap music with there pants down to there knee what a shame who know what this world is coming to.
This is what real music sounds and feels like. I feel sorry for todays youth because they have missed out on what my generation just took for granted.Real soul hits you right in your gut, you feel it in your bones.Thank you marvelettes you are trully marvelous.
The arrangements for the Marvelettes music became more sophisticated in time.... Wanda Young was a perfect match for this change! Of course both of the ladies if not all of them could sing! This is generally true in vocal groups..... all Can sing... they just have a different style... nuances and such! A wonderful song... a great group!
I guess it was hard for Gladys to be put to the side in favor of Wanda's vocals. Her voice is nice and Iove the way Wanda sang but Gladys's voice was stronger and had many altitudes but Motown felt Wanda had the sound after Diana became the star of the Supremes. I give Gladys koodos for sticking it out as long as she had but eventually the group would die out.
Thank you for adding this song to You tube. I just love it, the words are awesome. It's very poetic and romantic. We couldn't dance to this, but it was a nice record to listen to back in the 60's when I was a teenager. I also love "My baby must be a magician" and "Don't Mess with Bill".

i just heard this song right now . me and my dad just came home from cruising in his 1949 chevy :) haha damnn i freaking like this song . especially when i was cruising
My ex used to love this song. I had never heard this song before I met him. Now I love this song. It reminds me of him. Even though it didn't work out, I have some memories that I still treasure and this song is one of them.
Whip it baby, whip it. If there was anyone I wanted to sing like, it was Wanda. She's so cool. Saw them do this at a stage show......ooooooohhhh you were the catch that I was after. Cool lyrics, boss melody, greatest beat.
My grandmother, mom and aunts passed on the love of music via church/school choir. My sis, cousin and I had a teen girl group that performed in local talent shows ( great place for meeting boys, lol). We performed a couple of the Marvelette songs: mandatory harmony, flawless a cappella or my classical piano trained sister would go nuts. This song brings back happy memories!
From late 1966, early 1967...great harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder and it sounds like James Jameson on bass with the rest of the Funk Bros. So soulful.
OMG I haven't heard this for about 45 yrs!!!!!!!! Wasn't this the b side of another tune of theirs? I mean a 45 rpm, of course. Brings me wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back.
@kdd3051 The b-side was “I Think I Can Change You” also written by Smokey but it was a song written in 1962 and “shoved” in to the Motown Song Bank. “The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game” was recorded at the end of 1966 and was released in January 1967. During the initial recording of “The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game”, Smokey didn’t have any new material for the b-side so he got “I Think I Can Change You” out of mothballs and the girls recorded it also in late 1966. (More)

i know one thing if some of these girls out there can really hamonize like these girls did and get a old school band who knows the right beat like the funk brothers did i believe this rythem and soul music can come back but they realy have to want to do it even mary wells with her cancer still hung in there diana ross gave up soul to pop and show tunes .

This song has a lot of twist and turns.
A lot of jazz overtones.
Ella Fitzgerald covered this song.
The Jazz Standards/Real Book addicts would take forever to figure this one.

I always thought the Marvelettes were the best girl group of all time. Too bad Gordy and Motown didn't promote them as much as they did the Supremes.
