my old basset Edith use to sit like that. She would sit up like a gopher while in a chair or on the couch and would actually lean against the backrest.... and would sit there that way for a couple hours, even sleep sitting up. She looked like a little human sitting on the couch watching tv. We always got a kick out of it, and she did it all by herself.... my other two bassets have never once done it.

Yeah most Bassets have quite delicate backs, I know ours does because she is really long and very low set, but this Basset is obviously comfortable on her back standing up like that. Believe me, if she wasn't, she wouldn't do it, because Bassets are huge drama queens when they're uncomfortable! She's super cute.

My bassett does it just to look out the window i don't encourage it Yeah i taught her when she was young but didn't thing she would still be doing it at her age now (3) she does it juts to see out the window or to look CUTE when were eating at the table.

That's actually really bad and dangerous for bassets. Only a couple of the dozen or so bassets my family's had have begged like that. Normally they're supposed to whine when they want something.

All that said, it's still enormously adorable.

she's adorable. Bassett's one of the best.They r very smart, cute, adorable. But's not good 4 them 2 sit-up even when she like it. Not good for her spine (bassett has long spine). my friend took her bassett for back surgery due to her darling bassett like to jump off bed, sofa & hurt her back. Hope your dog quit from sitting up before she got a bad back. Love her, she's beautiful.

Hi, its very cute and your dog is lovely but encouraging bassets to sit up like that is actually very bad for their backs.  The breed has back problems anyway and this brings on early disentigration of the spine. Didn't want to bring anyone down but thought basset lovers should know.

My basset used to stand up like that when he was younger, but you kind of had to be there and keep him from falling backwards, as his balance was iffy at best. Great video, but why did you turn the camera sideways? That's kind of annoying, it's a video of a dog not a Scorsese film.

Cute bassett! We have a bassett boy Henry he started to do that at quite a young age of his own accord. You can't teach him anything he just does what he wants to do haha. They are such characters.

Didn't teach her that. She just started doing it on her own.

@dante2810 O: MINE DOES TOO!!! He just did one day but now we taught him how to do it on command. He also starts to dance (he walks on his hind legs backwards) when he really wants a treat!

You have to be careful with the Bassett's spine having such a long body makes it difficult to do certain things. I was told by my vet not to train my dog to sit up like that, bad for his back later on. But the dog is oh so cute.

Oh I DID NOT teach her that. She just started doing that on her own. Have no clue how she figured it out but now she realizes she gets a lot of attention from it (espscially in public!!!!)

She learned this on her own. I have three bassets and only she does it. And she knows how to play it too. If we are at the park and someone walks up to her and doesn't give her enough attention, she does that and it's an instant "Oh my goodness, look how cute!!! I have to give her a hug!" Yep, she knows how to train people well.
