Unfortunately this video doesn't accurately show what one trillion dollars actually looks like. Remember that this example uses $100 bills - to show what one trillion dollars looks like in $1 bills you need to multiply the final stack by 100. And if THAT doesn't blow you away I don't know what will!
In the 70's I did a little "security work" in the rapidly crashing Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) They paid us $20k per year in any world currency of our choice or Gold. If I'd held on to that coffee can full of Krugerrands I'd be a millionaire right now. The Dollar being devalued will wipe out our national debt like it did following WW2, but it will also wipe out all of your US Dollar holdings. Buy gold now at $1,000 per ounce and in 10 years when the dollar collapses it will be worth $5 to$8K per oz.
Actually, I think of the money more in terms of per capita. So even though I might think of 1 trillion dollars in my head, I think of it relative to the respective population. Which when you do that, 1 trillion is only about $3300 per person in the USA.
Now multiply that times 12 (and rising) and then consider that at least 40% of Americans pay 0 income tax. This leave the average taxpaying family a burden much closer to $100,000. Next consider that the median family income is closer to $50,000.
Now factor in that in 2008 they only collected 2.8 Trillion in tax revenue and the ultimate ugly truth... that current unfunded obligations top more than $30 Trillion.
Also of note, we have promised to pay interest on this debt, to our treasury bond holders (mostly Japan and China). If you multiply the US federal debt by the annual yeild of a 5yr treasury bond, then divide that by the number of US taxpayers, that puts it in perspective. It seems that the government will default on the interest payments to the foreign bond holders. Ever paying the debt back is not likely. When the gov defaults, the "trust" that backs the dollar will disappear.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, Education, Agriculture, Energy, bank and industry bailouts are all things that the Constitution has not authorized the Congress to partake in. Only be getting back to being a Constitutional Republic can we solve the debt problem. What you need to do is take that word "democracy" and quit using it, the US is not a democracy. The push to turn it in to one is the problem.

It seems that there are a few common misconceptions about national debt -- (1) Blame CONGRESS, not presidents. (2) A "Balanced budget" does not mean that the debt was eliminated! It just means that nothing was added to the debt THAT YEAR. The national debt was about $6T in the 1990's "Clinton" era. (3) The national debt is quite different from a household debt. Most of this debt is owed right back to America. And it can be refinanced indefinitely.

Remember that this example uses $100 bills - to show what one trillion dollars looks like in $1 bills you need to multiply the final stack by 100. In the 70's I did a little "security work" in the rapidly crashing Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) They paid us $20k per year in any world currency of our choice or Gold. If I'd held on to that coffee can full of Krugerrands I'd be a millionaire right now. The Dollar being devalued will wipe out our national debt like it did following WW2, but it will also wipe out all of your US Dollar holdings. Buy gold now at $1,000 per ounce and in 10 years when the dollar collapses it will be worth $5 to$8K per oz.

Actually, I think of the money more in terms of per capita. So even though I might think of 1 trillion dollars in my head, I think of it relative to the respective population. Which when you do that, 1 trillion is only about $3300 per person in the USA.

Now multiply that times 12 (and rising) and then consider that at least 40% of Americans pay 0 income tax. This leave the average taxpaying family a burden much closer to $100,000. Next consider that the median family income is closer to $50,000.
Now factor in that in 2008 they only collected 2.8 Trillion in tax revenue and the ultimate ugly truth... that current unfunded obligations top more than $30 Trillion.

Also of note, we have promised to pay interest on this debt, to our treasury bond holders (mostly Japan and China). If you multiply the US federal debt by the annual yeild of a 5yr treasury bond, then divide that by the number of US taxpayers, that puts it in perspective. It seems that the government will default on the interest payments to the foreign bond holders. Ever paying the debt back is not likely. When the gov defaults, the "trust" that backs the dollar will disappear.
