  • can you explain me the hidraulic system please?, i dindnt understood it how is mounted...

  • how much would this system effect your electricity bill

  • What sort of plants did you grow? I can only imagine smaller ones with less root systems as those pipes don't look large enough to grow a full sized plant.

  • @stratocaster1986able Yes its only intended for smaller stuff like lettuce, basil. Larger crops would tip over and clog the pipes. You are correct.

  • I'm going to build something similar. Could you tell me exactly what pump you're using? Or at least its GPH rating? Thanks.

  • @Viemexis It's a pond pump I purchased at Lowes. I'm not sure of gallons per minute, I just got a pump strong enough to lift the water 6 feet.

  • that was very inightful

  • Sir,

Can I take a baby plant from a pot, and put it in this system?

if not, can you redirect me to the process of growing plants in this system from step 1?

and also, your system has 6 holes in each tube, can they be longer? shorter? more holes? Less holes? and where do i find the nutrients? and what are they called? and how do i measure? ....

Thanks. Sorry for the begginner Q's.

  • @Client312 Yes, please see my Dutch Bucket video. That may work better for you. Yes, you can space the holes as much as you want, depending on plant need. I use Fox Farm liquid nutes, the directions for usage are on the bottle.

  • your vid is helpfull as i am intrested in doing this. its so eco friendly and has been around for thousands of years. thanks and keep up the good work my frien. GO GREEN.

  • Very nice, but how do you put the plants in the hole? do you just put the rockwool with the plant into the hole? How many times a day do you run this? And when you do how long do you it for?

  • @gaara0sama Yes you're right. You just drop the rockwool directly into the hole. I actually cut a piece of fiberglass window screen about a 1.5 inches wide and about 6 inches long and "draped" the rockwool cube with this screen, then lowered into the hole. Makes removal easier and also stabilizes the cube. I've got a close up picture of this in one on my videos. Since this is NFT is runs 24/7 365.

  • I heard you can use air with fog instead of water.

  • Finally, someone that gets the background music right!

  • Couple of questions... first of all, with the flow tubes? Can you buy them pre-drilled or did you drill the holes yourself (the grow chambers) as well as the holes for the nutrients/water to flow into? What kind of pump do you recommend? Can you germinate seeds in the rockwool/nutrient solution?

  • @matthewstatonbomer I'm too cheap to buy this stuff premade, so I used standard PVC and a hole saw ( drill and hole saw bit) to drill the holes. I cleaned the edges up with a file and sandpaper. The holes for the nutrients is just a standard 1/4 inch dill bit to fit the irrigation tubes. To germinate seeds, I soaked rockwool overnight, placed seeds in holes and placed in a germination tray with a wicking mat and lid. Hit the seeds with flourescent lights 24/7. No nutrients on seeds or seedlings

  • @matthewstatonbomer I used a standard pond pump, from lowes.

  • have you done tobacco? if so did it work good in this system.. thank you

  • @minecraftg81 I don't know much about tobacco, sorry

  • @BrownsABQ smoke the ganja

  • hi how well does yours work and how could i grow tobacco from mine please reply as soon as possibe thank you.

  • anybody have advice on resovoir size? I want to use the smallest resovoir possible so i don't have to empy loads of unused water which is labour intensive. As long as i top up the resovoir every few day with equal strength nutrient and replace what the plants use will this keep the nutrient balanced? Or have you got too accept with hydro that water has to be wasted and dumped often. I have done the math and no way is hydro more water efficient than soil for small scale only industrial

  • @210482fmj Mine is 18 Gallons. The standard wisdom with nutrients is to throw out and replace every 2 weeks. In between the 2 week intervals fill the depletion with straight water, no nutrients. I ran tomatoes this way and had healthier plants this year. Of course there are different schools of thought but its been my experience that most people overfeed their plants. I used Foxfarm nutrients and they recommend the 2 week cycle with straight water in between clean outs.

  • @BrownsABQ IT just seems so inefficient throwing away so much unused water when in soil the plants use everything and creates more labour than watering manually in the first place. Surely the way forward must be a system where you never discard only top up

  • What is the total height of the system. I currently have an ebb and flo system and my flood table sits at about two feet. The problem is that my pepper plants tend to get quite tall and hit the lights. I would like something that is not so tall to be able to grow my peppers without worrying about them growing past the lights. Currently my pepper plants are about 4.5 feet tall.

  • @bkpickell It sits about 3 feet off the ground. Enough room to slide a nutrient tank under. As far as light is concerned, I bought simple link chain and some "s" hooks at lowes, hooked lights into ceiling and was able to raise and lower lights by changing location of my s hook.

  • Thank you for answering my previous questions! Been looking through most hydro related stores in Norway and I only find water pumps with one outlet and equipment for dividing the flow into more outputs. This is something you have made yourself or bought from store? Do you have an example of some store that has this type of divider? Doesn't matter which country. Just need an idea about what that looks like and how to find it or make.

  • Best explained video I've found so far. Wonder what's the total width and length of this hydroponic system? Have limited space so I might need to customize some myself. Only got about 120cm(3 feet 9 inches). Would really want to replicate your system.

  • @betterfuture09 It's about 6 feet by 4 feet. Plus you need room for a light and growth. You could make this as small as you need, just don't try and cramp too many plants, they need ample light and space to grow.

  • what is actualy the benefit of this perpetual flowing system? Isnt it a waste of energy you need to pum water again and again?

  • @anesthetized8 This is called a nutrient flow system (NFT). The rockwool media used for the plants have very little ability to hold water. If you used a timer with this system, the plants would die due to lack of moisture. If you use a media that holds more water perlite and vermiculite (like my dutch bucket video) then you can flood the media only several times per day. Hope that helps.

  • @BrownsABQ You could also just fill the tubes with hydroten to hold the moisture for several hours and then turn it into a hybrid ebb and flo system.

  • im more about stelth,en i wanna make en understand Hydroponic system,i am thinking en trying to build as cheap en as relieabil as possabil.but pitch me your ideas plz

  • how big are the holes for the plants ? i like the video

  • @heather7780 1 1/2 inches diameter, 6 inches on center, This diameter was chosen to match the size of the rockwool cubes. The spacing should also match the light and space needs of the plant you're growing. Good Luck !

  • @BrownsABQ what size of hose did you use ?

  • @BrownsABQ Wouldn't net pots be better than the screen to hold the Hydroten? Net pots that size are less than a dollar a piece.

  • @bkpickell That's a great idea. I'm using rockwool in this system, but the netpots could hold rockwool as well. Good idea.

  • The best video ever

  • You know you can make your own liquid fertilizers, its more work intensive but still easier then running a dirt garden. You need compost,or any decaying matter.you need to dissolve the nutrients from the compost in water,by increasing the temperature the more minerals and nutrients it can hold, strain it from the plant matter repeat to get it more concentrated until you are satisfied with the solution.

  • excellent video man. im going to be building one of these systems now thanks to you. im going to brow big, huge juicy, fat tomatoes. "caugh" yeah tomatoes :P

  • Nice system

  • absolute genius great vid .

  • what is the liquid solution

and where did you find this information

  • @gymnasticslovers25 I'm using Fox Farm Tiger Bloom and Grow Big. Followed Bottle directions.

  • Great tutorial video! I've looked through a thousand "how-to's" and this was the clearest explanation. Doing a first year project as part of the Sussex County NJ Board of Agriculture/Plant a Row for the Hungry community Svc initiative. Alternative gardening-a perfect contribution for someone without a green thumb. I'll be adding trout to the project-food raised will be shared with a neighbor in need.

Best news -the project assembles so quickly-Thanks!

  • @nancyh227 Thanks much, I appreciate the feedback. Good luck with your project!

  • Awsome video

  • isn't the irrigation tubes too long? what kind of pump you are using?

  • Is that buttercrunch lettuce youre growing? How long did it take to germinate and grow to that size?

  • @thedoctorisin24380 Yes, buttercrunch. About 7 days under grow lights on 24/7. Then I moved into the regular hydro system. I had edible lettuce in about 28 days under artificial light.

  • GREAT POST TKS

  • $50? where can you buy all that PVC for that cheap?

  • Great how-to video! Thanks for all the tips that you shared in building an NFT system. By watching this video, any novice grower can definitely make his own NFT system in no time. I would also like to thank you for enumerating all the needed components, this is certainly very handy for people like me who are planning to build this kind of system.

  • I have a question: You mentioned a timer, but said it runs 24 hours a day. What is the purpose of this timer? Surely I could just plug it in and let it run?

  • @folken692000 You're right. In the NFT the pumps run 24/7. The timer is for the light system and the cooling fan which run 16 on 14 off. Thanks.

  • @BrownsABQ Thanks!

Based on the parts list for "Drain System", it doesn't correspond to the image that follows at 0:26 - to build what's shown, you'd need THREE of the 2 inch elbows - or am I missing something?

  • @folken692000 No, you're right it is 3 elbows...nice catch. Thanks!

  • thank u!
