You should always try to block lowkicks with the base of the knee or the knee cap itself. It hurts real bad if you throw a hard leg kick and it collides with your opponent's knee. But really the best thing to do if your opponent throws a lowkick is to let it miss. But if you want to be safe, check the kick.
