  • I just love this guy so much. Legendary singing!!!

  • Bravo !

  • Honnêtement défendu.

  • Immense. Genial.

  • quanto sei bono!

  • Assoluto Bastianini!!!!

  • To the the 3 people who "disliked this video, just exactly WHAT do you WANT????? Good grief!!

  • che Iago perfetto! grazie!

  • babyfairy you killed the competition Bastianini is the best ever, Gobbi's drama and understanding of Shakespeare goes down, Gobbi is the Jago by Verdi but not completely by Shakespeare, his vocal interpretations are superb But I vote forever for Bastianini

  • @egymagyar1111111 i am a great fan of gobbi.but i have to admit that in this case,

    bastianini is more powerful.

  • @ertzike: yes, Gobbi had been a great dramatist, and his interpretation is a high value, but I am a fan of Bastianini for a reason, I've listened this devilish aria by many of the great singers Bastianini stands out, his Luna also extraordinary

  • @egymagyar1111111

may be. however, for me,rigoletto and scarpia (and not only) are gobbi.

those thinks are not absolute. the choice between equals, remains a matter of taste

    ketmagyar.

  • @ertzike: what does it mean "ketmagyar"? you are perfectly correct, the only taste in my flavour is I feel a "scratchy" overtone sometimes in Gobbi's voice... there is an unsurpassable historic recording of the Simon Boccanegra Gobbi Christoff, I think that Plebe patrici... a few could reach, it is and an Ernani with MDM and Bastianini, Christoff Mitropoulos Cerquetti is the one... why we can not find these passions today?

  • @egymagyar1111111

i suposed that if your nick is "egymagyar" ( one hungarian) you know what " ket magyar" means ( two hungarians )

regardind our issue :" we can not find these passions today?" you say , yes we can. don't forget that two gegeration have been passed. we are living other times, ohther kinde of expresivity and emotions.

    a propos ' cherquetti was totaly underrated ! i supose(it was very

  • @ertzike: yes I know ketmagzar is two hungarians, does it mean your nick is one? Cerquetti's timing and family situation did not allow her more, using the train to travel, after Callas she would be the one but there were Sutherland (for me she never justified her glory) and Caballe, many more la Scotto who sometimes in her early ages were fabulous, but later on just a yelling machine, wanted to be the new Callas she would not ever be, all but la Price!!!

  • @egymagyar1111111

no.i only wanted to signal that i am hungarian speaking/

you right . but you can't denied the glorious first years of " la stupenda '

( certainly not because her beauty ) fabulous gilda whit corelli . for example .

price is a category on herself !

    cabelle excellent for certain roles.

scotto din not stoped singing at the right time...

rossana carteri is unknow to me/ i hope to find her in you tube/

i am agree regarding la marton.

i heared domingos boccanera. very god/ it seems that he is preparing

    rigoletto...

  • @ertzike: yes it seems to be, Domingo shall be a great Rigoletto...Bruno Prevedi, Carteri search for them, in the US there are a couple of new singers yet unknown, hope you know Rysanek as Lady Macbeth and others, and the great Milanov

  • @egymagyar1111111

    thanks. i will searche.

of cours i know rysanek and milanov.

'my' lady is undoubtedly shirley verret.

  • @ertzike do not forget Antonietta Stella

  • @egymagyar1111111 of course. and...adelina patti...

i preffer to live nowdays and discover new voices/

  • @egymagyar1111111

i suposed that if your nick is "egymagyar" ( one hungarian)

you know what " ket magyar" means ( two hungarians )

"we can not find these passions today" you say .

yes we can. perhaps in an other way .don't forget that two generations have been passed / many things are changed.

regarding cherquetii , she was troughly under rated. in callas and tebaldy era' was very difficult to sourvive...

  • @ertzike she had a situation, could not be a star, having not a big sponsor... you are right other wise, my taste is not matching too much of the contemporary singers, I miss the great passion and presence, the last "mohikan" is Marton Eva and yet my hat is down in front of Domingo as Simon Boccanegra in his age of 70 and yet something to take attention, I really did not like his singing, but I respect him greatly

  • I agree with you

  • Hey Babyfairy, thanks for introducing me to Ettore Bastianini

  • Superb as always. This is a studio recording, right? My understanding was that Bastianini never did Iago live. He was hired to sing the role but did not learn it in time for the performance, so had to be replaced.

  • I think this is recording from a concert in Hamburg in 1954 with Wilhelm Schuchter on the rostrum.

  • Actually, he did sing Iago live. In Cairo, March 1965, to excellent reviews. But no recordings of this performance exist.

  • Bastianini's voice is virtually perfect for Iago! Honestly, I believe if Verdi could have heard Bastianini sing the Credo he would have been delighted.

  • @legatofancier

    sono d'accordo!

  • @legatofancier AVESSE POTUTO SENTIRE ETTORE,SICURAMENTE SAREBBE STATO STRAFELICE.

  • @legatofancier AVESSE POTUTO SENTIRE ETTORE,SICURAMENTE SAREBBE STATO STRAFELICE.OR ORA HO SENTITO UN BUE,ASSASSINARE QUESTA MERAVIGLIA.ALL'IMPROVVISO E' APPARSO LUI,ETTORE.CHE DIO LO BENEDICA,OVUNQUE SI TROVI.

  • This man knew how to sing!!!!! Besides being a wonderful figure and having a real Verdi voice. One of the best !

  • The Baritone voice,.....

  • i think Bastianini was one of the greatest Verdi Baritones that has ever existed and i admire his amazing sound, resonance, colour and technique. But...is it mi imagination, or did his voice break at 1:03 i think it's beacause of the emotion but it seems to me a little bit broken. Amazing singing, anyway

  • I did not hear a "break" per se at 1:03. I think he was pushing just a little and the vocal quality may have suffered. However, we are all guilty of that once in a while. A remarkable performance, however!

  • Bastianini- what a voice! The world lost a very great baritone in 1968- the warmth and resonance of the voice are unmistakably his. Thank you for these wonderful posts.

  • a man expreses himself as it should be by voice as thunderstorms, cries, and sussurros

what a MAN singing Don Carlo in Renani in the scen he accepts the crown of the Roman Empire and before his ought to GOD to make great everything as Carlo Magno and he sings.... Boris Christoff was present...

  • El mejor, sin duda. Os lo dice una cantante de un teatro importante acostumbrada a escuchar barítonos (mejor, tenores disfrazados) . Esta es la voz de barítono por excelencia.

  • Bastianini sung Iago at Cairo in 1965 and his review was exellent.

That was one and the only Otelo he did.

I wish recording of this performance exists.

  • He is THE baritone.

  • Tremendous!

And I can feel Iago's loneliness... I think he's a human, not only Devil himself.

My God, what a beautiful voice! To bad he passed so early... :'(

  • Che belli ritratti -

  • I could listen to Bastianini's voice all day. Wow. Thanks!

  • Bastianini is gone so early...so early...what a pain! One of the best Iagos of all the history of this opera!

    ankhsnammon

  • I'm sorry, but almost the whole world seems to have not heard of J.C.T.,but obviously a little more of E.B.!

  • Thanks for this Posting! Yeah he would have been a great Iago. One of the Greats from the Post WW2 era. Too bad he had to leave so soon.

  • Karajan originally wanted Bastianini for his Otello recording with Del Monaco on Decca, but he didn't learn the music in time. I've always thought it was strange he never did this role, as his voice and color are perfect for Iago. Perhaps had he lived longer...

  • wonderful!!!

  • i didn't know that he sang Iago on stage-Genial!

  • This is from recital recording in 1954. He sung Iago only once at a production (I think it was Italian opera company's tour performance) in Cairo (1965). I don't think it was recorded, or more hopefully, I don't know whether there is recording of this performance.
