I have 30 inch tires. You need to add a 1/4 inch spacer for the front, then hammer down a metal flange on the wheel whale. A little work, but worth it. Maybe 15 minutes total.
Ive done the same stuff with my 2003. Its fun to surprise people with a vue

I own a 2004 AWD 3.5l. So far no issues @ 103k miles. Run synthetic lube in the rear diff and the transfer case and it will last forever.
