Major was a disastrous prime minister his contrariness caused the Black Wednesday mess when he and his eurozealots cronies forced crippling interest rates onto mortgage payers and small businesses forcing them into bankruptcy. After he had ruined peoples lives and lost billions of pounds Major had to withdraw from the ERM in the end. It is disgraceful that this man was made Knight of the Garter what was the Queen thinking of.

The incompetent John Major his Black Wednesday mess  caused hundreds of thousands of families to lose the roof over their heads while city speculators such as George Soros made millions. John Major continued to force crippling high interest rates onto mortgage payers in a disastrous attempt to keep the pound in the ERM . His contraryness caused billions of pounds of government reserves to be lost and brought New Labour to power at the next election to inflict more damage on Britain.

You're talking about the man who rebuilt the economy after a staggering recession, and who rebuilt Britain ready for the boom of the 2000s (driven by the free economic climate, not really Labour projects let's be perfectly honest analytically). This man was simply a gentleman- a very understandable man, and an understandable man is perfect really for power, so long as he is competent- and Major by his record was. It was the party, not he, who failed- massively.

A very much underrated PM. When he left office, he left a fantastic economy for Gordon Brown to ruin. It was a monumentous task to take over from Lady Thatcher, and I think he did well. Yes, there were problems, but once they left the ERM, Britain was on the road to recovery thanks to Major and Kenneth Clarke

It's difficult to judge John Major one way or the other because he never had a proper majority in Parliament. No PM can govern properly in those circumstances. Blair had the luxury of a majority of 179, the biggest for over a century.
