  • jimmy. poor guy but gotta feel for smith. the satewide 3 was an awesome looking car.

  • Everyone had their attention on Horton, but they had no idea Smith was injured.

  • Stanley almost looked like he was actually driving the car at 0:31?

  • Wow, that first medical guy freaked out when he saw Stan Smith.

  • I saw this race. I was 7 years old, and to this day I still remeber those two horrible wrecks- this one and Bonnett's flip later in the race. I had nightmares about this for a month afterward.

  • if you look at my vid of jimmy horton it shows his dirt racing career and the same nascar crash

  • how stupid was it not to have a catchfence around the corners

  • was this an ARCA race?

  • Winston Cup

  • Stan Smith had the same injury Dale Sr. had when he crashed

  • i miss ken squier calling races

  • That car of Jimmy Horton is a skeleton mangled mess! I remember it very vividly.

  • Why don't they go check Jimmy Horton first? He flipped over a wall! They could have endangered my uncle, Jimmy Horton!

  • They had the paramedics on the way to the site of Horton's car almost as soon as this wreck happened but you have to remember, the paramedics can't just go flying over the wall like he did to get to him, they had to go out of the track and around just to get to him.

  • I highly doubt that he's your uncle. Don't post stupid comments. And besides that Stan Smith, the driver who's car that they did check first was severely injured and nearly died.

  • @conesussteve Actually, hermeygirl, my sister, and I are Jimmy Horton's nieces. Our mother, Cyndi Horton, now Cynthia Holt, is Jimmy Horton's sister. Please do your research before you try and insult people and call them liars. I bet that if you actually DID do your research, you would learn that Jimmy Horton has a sister, married Kevin Hermey, had three daughters, and got divorced. I personally see no reason for someone to lie about being a relative to someone who used to race in NASCAR.

  • I read in the Winston Cup Scene that the inside of Mr. Smith's car was saturated in blood..the horror on the safety worker's face is evident.

  • they put catch fenses after this which was over do for like 10 years

  • This may not even be Horton's worst wreck...

The ARCA wreck when his car was hit from the bottom at Atlanta was incredible...

  • I remember watching Horton race at Fonda speedway a few years later in 358's. He flipped out of the track, and the only thing that stopped him from going in the Mohawk river was a tree that he hung from.

They had to get a crane to get his car out of it before they could get racing again.

  • this looks a lot like ricky cravens crash in 96

i have a vid up of it

  • yeah, but he was lucky because there was a fence in the way of him

  • Not so much...Jimmy's injuries were not nearly as bad as Ricky's...if anything, the catch fence caused Ricky's injuries!

  • what year was this?

  • 1993.

  • Ritchie Petty...not much of a career. Anyone have any news why he didn't make it...Did he just suck?

  • Racing isn't genetic, I suppose.

  • Never mind about Smith. I read the first comment and found out. Thanks!

  • I believe this was also the incident where Stanley Smith got injured and ended his career...anyone know what kind of injury it was?

  • i read something on a trading crad a while back about him having internal bleeding, partial paralysis, injuries along those lines.....but that he made a full recovery

  • Basilar skull fracture, this is the same injury that killed Dale Earnhardt.

  • In September of 2004, Stanley won a NASCAR Autozone Elite Series race.

Smith competes with impaired vision in his left eye, which he injured in a July 1993 crash at Talladega, Ala., during a Winston Cup race. He suffered multiple injuries in that crash, including a severed aorta in his neck, a fractured skull and some broken bones. The incident left him with very little peripheral vision in his left eye, said his wife, Delphia.

  • @ejs1978 If you sever an aorta, you would die in mere minutes. There's no surviving that in this situation.

  • @phathead50 lmao i know

  • @ejs1978 That was This Crash

  • Why would anyone give you a thumbs down for this? What you said was 100% accurate. God I hate YouTube.

  • Thanks for this clip. Being from South Jersey, I was a huge Horton fan when he was driving in the Cup series.

Seeing this also made me long for Ned Jarrett to return to the broadcasting booth.

  • "You know you're in trouble when the first person that gets to you after a wreck is carrying a beer"

His words on this and an invaluable lesson for life.

  • I have this whole race on VHS.

  • I've been looking for this footage forever. I was only 5 when this happened and I still remember my dad and I watching the replay later that night.

  • Didn't Neil Bonnett flip later in this same race, too?

  • Yea, he did.

  • wow

  • That was a crazy race. Horton went over the wall, Stan Smith almost died, Bonnett flipped into the catch fence, and Rusty flipped right at the finish line and still finished in the top 10.

  • according to dthornton313, the race where Rusty flipped is not this race, because Irvan won the race where Rusty crashed and dthornton says Earnhardt won this race.

  • Yeah, you're right. Rusty flipped in the spring '93 Talladega race, this wreck and Bonnett's were in the fall. I think I just tend to group them together because I have both races on the same VHS, lol.

  • So can you upload the last several laps or at least the finish of the fall race?

  • I will if I can find the tape. I've got almost every Cup race since '95 and quite a few from before that on VHS, but most of them are unlabled, so that's a crapload of tapes lol. I also need to buy a cable hookup to transfer them onto my computer.

  • Of course the crashes are on this website but I can't find the finish of the race.

  • Thank god Horton was alright and BRING BACK KEN SQUIRE

  • By the way, Horton is still racing at the local level in his native New Jersey.

  • lmao

  • that is the most retarded comment.

  • That's because the car landed OUTSIDE THE TRACK.

  • you crazy...nascar is the most watched sport on the planet

  • lol, I don't think so.

Unless you do the confusion planet = USA.

  • There wasnt a catch fence there at the time that got damaged, unlike the similar Ricky Craven crash.

  • This wreck occured in '94 or '95. Because of this incident, there was a fence installed in the turns. In '96 there was a similar wreck with Ricky Craven where he would have gone over the wall but got thrown back onto the track like a tennis ball.

  • No, it happened in 1993.

  • so did the guy die?

  • You obviously missed the end--he got out and I think waved even!

  • No one died in that wreck. Stanley Smith, the driver of #49, suffered a severe head injury and a severed artery in his neck, which nearly killed him.

Jimmy Horton, who went over the wall, was fine.

  • NO FAG
