I saw this race. I was 7 years old, and to this day I still remeber those two horrible wrecks- this one and Bonnett's flip later in the race. I had nightmares about this for a month afterward.
They had the paramedics on the way to the site of Horton's car almost as soon as this wreck happened but you have to remember, the paramedics can't just go flying over the wall like he did to get to him, they had to go out of the track and around just to get to him.
I highly doubt that he's your uncle. Don't post stupid comments. And besides that Stan Smith, the driver who's car that they did check first was severely injured and nearly died.
@conesussteve Actually, hermeygirl, my sister, and I are Jimmy Horton's nieces. Our mother, Cyndi Horton, now Cynthia Holt, is Jimmy Horton's sister. Please do your research before you try and insult people and call them liars. I bet that if you actually DID do your research, you would learn that Jimmy Horton has a sister, married Kevin Hermey, had three daughters, and got divorced. I personally see no reason for someone to lie about being a relative to someone who used to race in NASCAR.
I remember watching Horton race at Fonda speedway a few years later in 358's. He flipped out of the track, and the only thing that stopped him from going in the Mohawk river was a tree that he hung from.
They had to get a crane to get his car out of it before they could get racing again.
i read something on a trading crad a while back about him having internal bleeding, partial paralysis, injuries along those lines.....but that he made a full recovery
In September of 2004, Stanley won a NASCAR Autozone Elite Series race.
Smith competes with impaired vision in his left eye, which he injured in a July 1993 crash at Talladega, Ala., during a Winston Cup race. He suffered multiple injuries in that crash, including a severed aorta in his neck, a fractured skull and some broken bones. The incident left him with very little peripheral vision in his left eye, said his wife, Delphia.

Love this vid. I've hated Jimmy Horton since his antics at Lebanon Valley in 1985 when he intentionally took out Brett Hearn as Brett was lapping him. Horton can't crash hard enough to please me. My favorite Youtube video!!!!!!!!
That was a crazy race. Horton went over the wall, Stan Smith almost died, Bonnett flipped into the catch fence, and Rusty flipped right at the finish line and still finished in the top 10.
according to dthornton313, the race where Rusty flipped is not this race, because Irvan won the race where Rusty crashed and dthornton says Earnhardt won this race.
Yeah, you're right. Rusty flipped in the spring '93 Talladega race, this wreck and Bonnett's were in the fall. I think I just tend to group them together because I have both races on the same VHS, lol.
I will if I can find the tape. I've got almost every Cup race since '95 and quite a few from before that on VHS, but most of them are unlabled, so that's a crapload of tapes lol. I also need to buy a cable hookup to transfer them onto my computer.
This wreck occured in '94 or '95. Because of this incident, there was a fence installed in the turns. In '96 there was a similar wreck with Ricky Craven where he would have gone over the wall but got thrown back onto the track like a tennis ball.
jimmy. poor guy but gotta feel for smith. the satewide 3 was an awesome looking car.

Why don't they go check Jimmy Horton first? He flipped over a wall! They could have endangered my uncle, Jimmy Horton!

I read in the Winston Cup Scene that the inside of Mr. Smith's car was saturated in blood..the horror on the safety worker's face is evident.

they put catch fenses after this which was over do for like 10 years

This may not even be Horton's worst wreck...
The ARCA wreck when his car was hit from the bottom at Atlanta was incredible...

Not so much...Jimmy's injuries were not nearly as bad as Ricky's...if anything, the catch fence caused Ricky's injuries!

@ejs1978 If you sever an aorta, you would die in mere minutes. There's no surviving that in this situation.

Thanks for this clip. Being from South Jersey, I was a huge Horton fan when he was driving in the Cup series.
Seeing this also made me long for Ned Jarrett to return to the broadcasting booth.

No one died in that wreck. Stanley Smith, the driver of #49, suffered a severe head injury and a severed artery in his neck, which nearly killed him.
Jimmy Horton, who went over the wall, was fine.
