I think 4051s seem louder to me, but that may be because I went to a school with 4051s. I don't know any places with 4050s; all places I've seen with 405X series signals use 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates.
Do those screws you were adjusting on the front of the forms adjust the sound volume? I think I could tell the difference between the two forms, the one on the left had a much higher pitched sound, but personally I would have preferred it if you had used the horns one by one as opposed to both at the same time, that would have made it a bit easier for me to distinguish between the two sounds.
